  • A hydrocarbon trap (HT) plays an important role of controlling vehicle emissions in the so-called cold emission period by holding hydrocarbons until three way catalysts (TWCs) are thermally activated. In this study, we have investigated the adsorption characteristics of cation (H, La, K, and Ag)-exchanged ZSM-5 zeolites for hydrocarbons (propylene, n-butane, and toluene) by DFT (density functional theory)-based computational chemistry. Cation exchange is to improve the hydrothermal stability of zeolites and their adsorption capacity, thereby rendering cation-exchanged zeolites promising materials for HT. The idea of cluster approximation makes the calculation of adsorption energies superbly efficient in computation. The results showed that Ag-exchanged ZSM-5 would be the best for the adsorption of all three adsorbates, without often encountered Ag oxidation in experiments. Besides, the hydrothermal stability of La-exchanged ZSM-5 was confirmed from the change of geometrical parameters by cation exchange, and it showed good adsorption capacity for propylene and toluene. Hydrogen-exchanged ZSM-5 was also good for hydrogen adsorption, but had poor hydrothermal stability.

  • This paper describes the experiments for investigating the effects of thermal stability of several commercial carpet mate materials. The melting point and thermal decomposition temperature was measured by means of a differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) in air condition. The DSC data and burning test results of nylon bulked continuous filament(N-BCF) yarn 100%, nylon(NY), polypropylene(PP), and a new material named polytrimethyleneterephthalate(PTT) were analysed to obtain the effect on their thermal stability. Conclusively, we observed that PTT and PP were approximately $380^{\circ}C$ and $240^{\circ}C$ to start the thermal decomposition, respectively. In other words, PTT is thermally the most stable material for carpet manufacturing.

  • The oxidation stability of samples prepared by blending samples reported previously with diesel oil and diesel oil with additives(alkyl benzene and phenolic type of materials), was tested to study the mechanism of thermal oxidation stability of the regenerated lubricating oils. It was found that the improvement of thermal oxidation stability of such oils was caused by the formation of aromatic compounds, especially phenolic type of organic materials.

  • Predispersed solvent extraction (PDSE) of succinic acid with Tri-n-octylamine (TOA) dissolved in 1-octanol from aqueous solutions of 50 g/L succinic acid was examined. It was found that the equilibrium data in PDSE was equal to that in conventional solvent extraction in spite of the lack of mechanical mixing in PDSE. The influence of salts on succinic acid extraction and the stability of colloidal liquid aphrons (CLAs) were also investigated. Results indicated that in the presence of sodium chloride, less succinic acid was extracted by CLAs and the stability of CLAs decreased. However, the stability of CLAs was sufficient to make PDSE practically applicable to real fermentation broth, considering the concentration range of salts in the fermentation process for succinic acid.

  • A theoretical analysis was conducted of convective instability driven by buoyancy forces under transient temperature fields in an annular porous medium bounded by coaxial vertical cylinders. Darcy's law and Boussinesq approximation are used to explain the characteristics of fluid motion and linear stability theory is employed to predict the onset of buoyancy-driven motion. The linear stability equations are derived in a global domain, and then cast into in a self-similar domain. Using a spectral expansion method, the stability equations are reformed as a system of ordinary differential equations and solved analytically and numerically. The critical Darcy-Rayleigh number is founded as a function of the radius ratio. Also, the onset time and corresponding wavelength are obtained for the various cases. The critical time becomes smaller with increasing the Darcy-Rayleigh number and follows the asymptotic relation derived in the infinite horizontal porous layer.

  • A novel retinol derivative, polyethoxylated retinamide (Medimin A) was synthesized, as an anti-aging agent. Collagen synthesis, skin permeation, stability, and toxicity of Medimin A were evaluated and compared with those of retinol and retinyl palmitate. In vitro collagen synthesis was evaluated by quantitative assay of [$^3H$]-proline incorporation into collagenase sensitive protein in fibroblast cultures. For in vitro skin permeation experiments, Franz diffusion cells (effective diffusion area: $1, 766{\;}\textrm{cm}^2$) and the excised skin of female hairless mouse aged 8 weeks were used The stabilities of retlnoids were evaluated at two different temperature ($25{\;}^{\circ}C$ and $40{\;}^{\circ}C$) and under UV in solubilized state and in OW emulsion. To estimate the safety, acute oral toxicity, acute dermal toxicity, primary skin irritation, acute eye irritation and human patch test were performed The effect of Medimin A on collagen synthesis was similar to that of retinol. The skin permeability of Medimin A was higher than those of retinol and retinyl palmitate. The Medimin A was more stable than retinol and retinyl palmitate. Medimin A was nontoxic in various toxicological tests. These results suggest that Medimin A would be a good anti-aging agent for enhancing bioavailability and stability.

  • Geotextile composites to improve the weather ability were composed of recycled polyester geotextile with carbon black as ultraviolet stabilizer and polypropylene geotextile by needle-punching method, and evaluated physical properties, ultraviolet resistance and chemical stability. Retention ratio of tensile properties of non woven polypropylene geotextiles were decreased about 50% by the exposed condition with ultraviolet but those of geotextile composites were slightly decreased than polypropylene geotextiles. Geotextile composites which have larger weights of polyester geotextile were more stable against ultraviolet. For chemical stability, the changes of tensile properties of geotextile composites were in the range of -20~+10% at the various chemical conditions.

  • Polyol esters were synthesized by condensation reaction of polyols (PE and DIPE) and linear acids such as valeric acid, caproic acid, heptylic acid and caprylic acid. The structures of polyol esters were confirmed by gas chromatography. Hot tube test was used to measure thermal stability of polyol esters and its thermal properties depended on the structure of acid moiety contained in polyol esters.

  • We investigated heat stability of epoxy resin products and epoxy resin according to the influence hardener. The heat flow which shows the degree of thermal decomposition of the epoxy resin product and epoxy resin measured by using the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). As a result, we found that in the case of heat stability for epoxy resin as hardener was added, the ratio of one to one (epoxy resin : hardener) was the most suitable in air condition and nitrogen atmosphere.
