  • To develope chemical heat pump using available energy sources, solar heat and other kinds of waste thermal energy, we have studied the heat transfer rate in cylindrical bed reactor packed with calcined Dolomite. Two dimensional (radial and circumferential) Partial differential equations, concerning heat and mass transfer in packed bed of calcined Dolomite, are solved numerically to describe the characteristics of the reaction of calcined Dolomite and heat transfer. The results obtained by numerical analysis about two dimensional profiles of temperature and conversion of reactant in the packed bed reactor and the amount of exothermic heat released from the reactor are follows. It was found that all of calcined Dolomite packed bed kept the reaction temperature of about 750K throughout the entire part of the bed, immediately after the steam was introduced exothermic reaction of hydration was proceeded from the packed bed inpu to output and from wall side to center. The rate of thermochemical reaction depends on the temperature and concentration and it is also governed by the boundary conditions and heat transfer rate in the particle packed bed.

  • To develop chemical heat pump of higher energy density and efficiency heat-release characteristics accompanied by exothermic hydration reaction in packed bed, $Ca(OH)_2/CaO$ reactor, are examined in a lab-scale unit. We have studied the enhancement effect of inserted fins in cylindical packed bed reactor. The results obtained by numerical analysis about profiles of temperature, completion time of reaction and exothermic heat amount released from the reactor read the insertion of fins in reactor can reduce the reaction completion time by half and the rate of thermochemical reaction depends on the temperature and concentration, and it is also governed by the boundary conditions and the rate of heat transfer in the particle packed bed.

  • Species, doses and routes extrapolation can be sucessfully carried out by using a physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) approach. And PBPK approach to assess risk of hazardous chemicals is reasonable whatever the exposure scenarios are happened. Both partitioning coefficients of chemical between tissue and blood and enzymatic metabolic rate constants are key parameters to build up the PBPK model. In this study, we tried to estimate in vitro metabolic rate constants using a special apparatus instead to measure the in vivo constants which are used to PBPK simulation since the in vitro tests are less expensive and more convenient than in vivo tests. For the purpose, we designed and tested the new system to measure continuously the headspace concentration of VOC. The newly designed system is composed with a diffusion chamber which generates gaseous substrate, a reaction vessel with a recirculating pump to establish a closed system, an autbmatic sampler from a gas phase, a gas chromatography to analyze the headspace. In addition, a cold water condenser is attached between the reaction vessel and pump to reduce the content of gaseous moisture which interferes with chemical analysis. To validate the newly developed methodology, in vitro metabolic rate constants of trichloroethylene (TCE) as a prototype VOC were estimated by simulating observed results with an ACSL program. The simulated results are consistent to those estimated by the other research groups. This finding suggests that our newly designed closed system may be a useful apparatus to estimate in vitro metabolic rate constants for VOC.

  • A numerical study has been peformed to investigate the flow and mixing characteristics of a chemical injection tank in the chemical and volume control system (CVCS) of Yonggwang 5&6 (YGN 5&6). This study was undertaken to provide a basis for modification of the previous design (YGN 3&4) which gave a lot of difficulties in installation and operation of the chemical injection system during the start-up test because it needs a special reciprocating pump with a high actual head. For the tank of length-to-diameter ratios (L/D) of 1,2 and 3, each with and without a baffle inside, calculation results were obtained by solving the unsteady laminar two-dimensional elliptic forms of governing equations for the mass, momentum and species concentration. Finite-difference method was used to obtain discretized equations, and the SIMPLER solution algorithm, which was developed based on the staggered grid control volume, was employed for the calculation procedure. Results showed that the baffle is very effective in enhancing the mixing in the tank and that a baffle should be installed near the tank entrance in order to 110 chemicals into the reactor coolant system (RCS) within the operating time required.

  • In precision machinery systems for medical and chemical applications, micropumps with a low pulsation have been demanded and investigated for accurate delivery of a small amount of liquid. This study proposes sheet type check valves instead of ball type check valves for PZT pumps and performs some tests on dynamics characteristics of check valves having different design parameter with variable frequency. The selected materials of check valves is NBR, PP film, Polyimide and Stainless steel(SUS304). In the experiment, dynamic characteristics of stainless steel thin plate have better performance than others.

  • Exergy analysis is widely used in energy system analysis for more efficient energy use. Pinch technology has focused on chemical plants, such as pure heat exchanger networks. In this study, the objective is to seek more effective means with integrating above two methods. In order to demonstrate effective result and to prove possibility for pinch analysis, the steam turbine is adopted to make heat recovery in the heat exchanger network. Three cases are introduced using the integration of exergy and pinch analysis. The standard steam turbine utility is the base case, and adding the heat pump to this system is the second case. The third case is the system with the heat pump and minimum utilities. The results show that the output power of steam turbine in the case(2) and case(3) are increased up to 42% and 46%, respectively, compared with that of base case.

  • The performance of a geothermal heat pump system using carbon dioxide was investigated by the steady-state cycle simulation program developed in this study. A parametric study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of various operating conditions on the performance of the basic cycle without an IHX(internal heat exchanger). The simulation program consists of several Fortran subroutines for simulating indoor and outdoor heat exchangers, compressors, and expansion valves and Visual Basic subroutines for the graphic user interface(GUI) consisted with pre-processor for input data and post-processor for the output data. Refprop V6.01 was used for estimating the thermodynamic properties and equilibrium behaviors of carbon dioxide. The simulation results were validated by comparing experimental data through a series of case studies. The cycle simulation program developed in this work would seem to be a useful tool in optimizing and establishing economical and efficient operating conditions in the $CO_2$ geothermal heat pump system.

  • The goal of this paper is to measure and compare the performance of solar heat pump for school classroom heating. To accomplish the goal, solar heat pump with alumium roll bond type evaporator and indoor heat exchanger(condenser) was built and fully instrumented with thermocouples and pressure transducers etc. The test results showed that the COP and capacity of R-134a($CF_3CH_2F$) were higher than those of R-12($CF_2Cl_2$). The solar heat pump system for room heating was designed to show the best efficiency that the room temperature make $18{\sim}20^{\circ}C\;and\;23{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ in Seoul during November, December, and January.

  • Background: As one of the most frequently occurring accidents in a chemical plant, a fire accident may occur at any place where transfer or handling of combustible materials is routinely performed. Methods: In particular, a jet fire incident in a chemical plant operated under high pressure may bring severe damage. To review this event numerically, Computational Fluid Dynamics methodology was used to simulate a jet fire at a pipe of a compressor under high pressure. Results: For jet fire simulation, the Kemeleon FireEx Code was used, and results of this simulation showed that a structure and installations located within the shelter of a compressor received serious damage. Conclusion: The results confirmed that a jet fire may create a domino effect that could cause an accident aside from the secondary chemical accident.
