Organic farming has rapidly increased in Gangwon province, but there is a concern about nutrient accumulation and nutrient imbalance in the soil of organic farming. This study was conducted to investigate the impact of continuous application of organic amendments on growth and yield of red pepper and soil characteristics compared with chemical fertilizers application for four years. Treatments of organic amendments including oil cake, rice straw compost, amino acid compost, rice bran compost, and mushroom media (spent substrate) compost resulted in comparable growth and yield of pepper to chemical fertilizers. Organic amendments improved soil physical and chemical characteristics. Especially, rice bran compost and oil cake significantly increased soil organic matter compared with chemical fertilizer application and mushroom media compost and rice straw compost significantly improved soil aggregate stability. On the other hand, available phosphate level in the soil amended with rice bran compost or mushroom media compost was relatively high compared with the other treatments due to relatively high phosphate levels in the composts. It is not easy to adjust nutrient composition in the organic materials. Therefore, the results obtained from the study imply that nutrient imbalance needs to be carefully considered in organic farming without use of chemical fertilizers.
Controlling the light energy and major nutrients is important for high cell density culture of cyanobacterial cells. The growth phase of Anabaena variabilis can be divided into an exponential growth phase and a deceleration phase. In this study, the cell growth in the deceleration phase showed a linear growth pattern. Both the period of the exponential growth phase and the average cell growth rate in the deceleration phase increased by controlling the light intensity. To control the light intensity, the specific irradiation rate was maintained above $10\;{\mu}mol/s/g$ dry cell by increasing the incident light intensity stepwise. The final cell density increased by controlling the nutrient supply. For the control of the nutrient supply, nitrate, phosphate, and sulfate were intermittently added based on the growth yield, along with the combined control of light intensity and nutrient concentration. Under these control conditions, both final cell concentration and cell productivity increased, to 8.2 g/l and 1.9 g/l/day, respectively.

The practice of supplying nutrients for paddy soil with sustaining human health and ecological soundness is to utilize indicators considering soil chemical reactions. The long-term basis experiment of fertilizer and amendment of paddy soil and an experiment of yield response of soil types on nitrogen level from 2000 till 2002were used to search indicators of nutrient supplying capacity related to soil chemical reactions. Chemical reactions of paddy soil was composed of dissociating and/or adsorbing nutrients and of decomposing soil organic matter (SOM) into $H^+$, $e^-$, $CO_2$ in paddy soil. The indicators of nutrient supplying capacity, which were established by considering soil chemical reactions, were SOM or soil protein for nitrogen and available phosphate for phosphorus and cation exchangeable capacity (CEC) and exchangeable potassium for potassium. Korea has used fertilizer recommendation equations established with the indicators of nutrient supplying capacity for paddy soil.
The effectiveness of physiological or chemical acid - alkali solution was investigated as the method to control pH value of nutrient solution in hydroponics dynamically. Lettuces were cultivated using NH$_4$H$_2$PO$_4$ as physiological acid and NaNO$_3$ as physiological alkali or H$_2$SO$_4$ as chemical acid in dynamic control system. The pH of nutrient solution was controlled satisfactorily in the range of pH 5.5-6.5, regardless of treatments. Chemical acid changed pH of solution faster than chemical acid when supplied to the nutrient solution. Any of them did not show any harmful symptom. It is recommended that chemical acid is preferred during the growing stage and physiological acid like as NH$_4$H$_2$PO$_4$ is preferred from several days before harvest stage.
Assessment of nutrient balance in region unit is important to make a decision on nutrient management in agriculture. In this study, the nutrient demand in arable land and nutrient supply from livestock manure and chemical fertilizer were estimated from pig-concentrated areas. Three regions (H, I and J) were selected on the basis of pig numbers per unit area of arable land. In H and I regions, nitrogen amount from pig manure occupied about 50% of total livestock manure. Nutrient supply was three times higher compared to the nutrient demand in each of 3 regions. Soil available phosphate of higher pig-populated area in regional unit was higher than less populated livestock area. Therefore, livestock manure-derived regional management and monitoring of soil nutrient contents is necessary for the minimization and improvement of nutrient surplus.
Anatomical and physico-chemical properties of some nutrient and tonic crude drugs have been estimated and compared. Resin duct and druse crystal were observed more in Acanthopanax Cortex than in Ginseng Radix. Bast fiber bundle and solitary crystals were abandantly present in Glycyrrhizae Radix. Mucilage crude drugs contained mucilage ducts and bundles of raphides as common components and their arrangements of vascular bundles were different. TLC analysis showed different patterns of saponin, flavonoid, ${\gamma}-aminobutyric$ acid and sitosterols.

This study was conducted to evaluate effects of diethylene triamine penta acetic acid (DTPA) treatment on growth of red pepper and nutrient availability to salt accumulated soil in the plastic film house. The treatments were no application (Control), chemical fertilizers (NPK), DTPA (0.06, 0.13, and 0.19 mM) and the half of chemical fertilizers (NPK) with DTPA 0.06 mM. Fruit yield of red pepper showed no significant difference between the treatments (control, NPK, DTPA 0.06 mM, 0.13 mM, except for DTPA 0.19 mM. Red peppers were killed by DTPA 0.19 mM treatment because the high concentration of DTPA was toxic to crop. However, dry mass (stem and leave) and nutrient uptake of red pepper in DTPA 0.06 mM treatment increased significantly compared with those of control. In particular, nutrient uptake of red pepper in DTPA 0.06 mM treatment increased in the order of Fe, Mn, and Zn > Ca and Mg > K, as the magnitude of the stability constants of DTPA. Thus the application of DTPA 0.06 mM was the most effective for the alleviation of nutrient accumulation in the plastic film house soils.
Natural state materials contain a lot of available nutrient components. Among them, natural nutrient substances are utilized not only as the ingredient of functional foods but also as the excipients of functional cosmetics and pharmaceutic. Of these nutrient substances, solubility parameters of each components were calculated to choose the most suitable solvents for solutions. The solubility parameters for each components were composed of the dispersion contribution of the molecular attractive function, the polar contribution of the molecular attractive function and the contribution of the hydrogen bonding force. The chi parameters ($\chi_{12}$) were calculated with the information of the solubility parameter for the solute and solvent and were used as the criteria for the optimal solute-solvent pair. The optimal solvents were suggested with the numerical values of chi parameters for some amino acids.
Modern livestock production facilities face both challenges and opportunities with respect to sustainable manure management practices. Nutrient recycling is constrained by the size of modern livestock operations, the low nutrient density of liquid manures, and the spatial and temporal variability of manure nutrient concentrations. These constraints can and must be addressed or farmers will be increasingly drawn to nutrient wasting strategies such as anaerobic lagoons, wetlands, and other systems designed to treat and discharge nutrients to the environment. Intentional discharge of nutrients is difficult to justify in a sustainable agricultural production system, since replacing those nutrients through chemical fertilization requires considerable expenditure of energy. In contrast, there are several currently viable technologies which provide the homogenization and stabilization needed to successfully compete against chemical fertilizers, including composting, pelletization, and anaerobic digestion. Some of these technologies, particularly anaerobic digestion and composting, also open up increased opportunities to market the energy and nutrients in manure to non-agricultural uses. Future advances in biotechnology are likely to demonstrate additional options to transform manure into fuels, chemicals, and other non-agricultural products.
BACKGROUND: Water quality of rural areas are susceptible to agricultural nutrient input and supply such as chemical fertilizer and livestock manure. This study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of nutrient (N and P) indices in understanding spatial variations of water quality across Chonnam province which is a typical agricultural region in Korea. METHODS AND RESULTS: The nutrient indices including chemical fertilizer supply, livestock manure production, and nutrient balance were correlated with water quality data (T-N, T-P, BOD, and COD) for the twenty-two districts of the province. Concentration of T-N were positively correlated with chemical fertilizer supply, livestock manure N production, and nutrient balance (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Meanwhile, T-P concentration was not correlated with these nutrient indices; however, there was a tendency that T-P concentration increases with livestock manure P production (P=0.06) and with nutrient balance (P=0.09). These results suggest that T-N concentration is susceptible to both chemical fertilizer and livestock manure; whereas T-P is likely to be affected by livestock manure rather than chemical fertilizer. The concentrations of BOD and COD were also positively (P<0.05 or P<0.01) correlated with livestock manure production. CONCLUSION: This study shows the usefulness of nutrient indices in understanding spatial variations of water quality and suggests that livestock manure rather than chemical fertilizer can be a more critical water pollution source and thus highlights the need for more attention to livestock manure treatments for rural water quality management.
