Ergosterol involves in fungal cell growth as a major component in fungal cell membranes. It can be an indicator that shows the fungal activity, and its content depends on the fungal strains, culture, growth conditions and so on. In this study, fungal activities and growth patterns of three white-rot fungi strains isolated in Korea were evaluated by determination of ergosterol contents during the incubation. Wood decay test and chemical analyses of wood were also performed to verify the relationship between fungal activity and wood degrading capacity of white-rot fungi for 60 days. In the results of experiments, it is considered that the test strains selectively degrade large amount of lignin in wood at the early stage of decay. Especially, Phanerochaete chrysosporium showed the best capability on selective degradation of lignin among the test fungi. It is suggested that the determination of ergosterol content in the fungal culture during the incubation is the simple and effective screening method of white-rot fungi for the application to biopulping of wood.
Simultaneous measurements of velocity and OH distribution were made using particle image velocimetry(PIV) and planar laser-induced fluorescence(PLIF) of OH radical in turbulent hydrogen nonpremixed flames with coaxial air. The OH radical was used as an approximate indicator of chemical reaction zone. The OH layer was correlated well with the stoichiometric velocity, $U_s$, instantaneously and on average. In addition, high strain-rate regions almost coincide with the OH distribution. The residence time in flame surface, calculated from the root-mean-square value of the radial velocity, is proportional to $(x/d_F)^{0.7}$. It is found that the mean value of principal strain rate on the OH layer can be scaled with $(x/d_F)^{-0.7}$ and therefore, the product of the residence time and the mean strain rate remains constant over all axial positions.
We constructed an efficient T-vector, pTQEST216T that employed an engineered esterase as an indicator for direct cloning of PCR products. After ligation of the XcmI-digested vector with PCR products, this cloning system could easily discriminate positive clones owing to insertional inactivation of the esterase reporter. Additionally, PCR products were efficiently cloned into this vector without the gel purification steps, owing to the well-designed multi-cloning site that was in-frame fused at the circularly permutated gap of the reporter.

In this study, the computer program was developed to predict the engine performances and exhaust emissions of a 4-cylinder 4-stroke cycle ignition engine including intake and exhaust system. The simulation models applied to each process were as follows. For the combustion process, two zone model which requires only one empirical constant was applied, and for the gas exchange process, the method of characteristics that allows the calculations of the time variation and spatial variation of properties along the pipes was used. Constant pressure perfect mixing model was applied to take into account of the interaction at manifold branches. To predict exhaust emissions, twelve chemical species were considered to be present in combustion products. These species were calculated through equilibrium thermodynamics and kinetic theory. The empirical constants reduced to least number as possible were determined through the comparison with the experimental indicator diagram of one particular operating condition and these constants were applied to other operating conditions. The predicted performances and emissions were compared with the experimental results over the wide range of operating conditions.
Both the X-ray diffraction data of the normal direction in the sample orientation and the pole figure data of three reflections, (111), (200) and (220), were used to do the Rietveld refinement for the copper sheet prepared by a cold rolling process. The agreement between calculated and observed patterns was not satisfactory, which was attributed to the preferred orientation effect of the copper sheet. The Rietveld refinement for the copper sheet could be done successfully by applying the pole density of each reflection obtained from the corresponding inverse pole figure to the X-ray diffraction data of the normal direction. The R-weighted pattern, $R_{wp}$ was 12.99% and the goodness-of-fit indicator, S, was 3.68.

Recently, as it has greatly increased the demand on the serviceability of subway, cable tunnel, the stability of the tunnel structures has been attracting the concern of engineers and researchers. The purpose of this study is to idently the various characteristics of lining concrete in subway structures. The nondestructive technique such as the surface hardness method and the extend of carbonation by phenolphthalein indicator and chemical analysis due to XRD are considered. Also, the concrete core was cut in three pieces per tunnel for the exact evaluation of strength.
The flash point is an important indicator of the flammability of a chemical. In this study, the flash points for the n-propanol+n-butanol and n-propanol+acetic acid systems were measured by Tag open-cup apparatus. The experimental data were compared with the values calculated by the Raoult's law and optimization method based on van Laar and UNIQUAC equations. The calculated values by optimization method were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law.
Two different model selection indices, the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and the coefficient of determination ($R^2$), are used to discriminate competing isotherm equations for aqueous pollutant removal systems. The former takes into account model accuracy and complexity while the latter considers model accuracy only. The five types of isotherm shape in the Brunauer-Deming-Deming-Teller (BDDT) classification are considered. Sorption equilibrium data taken from the literature were correlated using isotherm equations with fitting parameters ranging from two to five. For the isotherm shapes of types I (favorable) and III (unfavorable), the AIC favors two-parameter equations which can easily track these simple isotherm shapes with high accuracy. The $R^2$ indicator by contrast recommends isotherm equations with more than two parameters which can provide marginally better fits than two-parameter equations. To correlate the more intricate shapes of types II (multilayer), IV (two-plateau) and V (S-shaped) isotherms, both indices favor isotherm equations with more than two parameters.

Chlorophyll a (chl a) has been used as an indicator for phytoplankton biomass in pelagic ecosystems due to the relative ease of measurement and selectivity for autotrophs in mixed plankton assemblages. However, the use of chi a as an indicator for phytoplankton biomass is restricted due to its inability to resolve taxonomic differences of phytoplankton and the highly variable relationship of chi a with phytoplankton. Here, we describe the analysis of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) photosynthetic pigment data using CHEMTAX, which is a matrix factorization program that uses chemical taxonomic indices (phytoplankton carotenoids) to quantify the abundance of phytoplankton groups. Compared to direct microscopic counting that can distinguish species within broad groups, the resolution of taxonomic groups by CHEMTAX is generally coarse. It can only distinguish between diatoms, dinoflagellates, cryptophytes, cyanobacteria, chlorophytes, prasinophytes, and haptophytes. However, CHEMTAX analysis is much faster and less expensive than microscopic counting methods. HPLC pigment observations were taken in the spring, summer, fall, and winter in$ 2005\sim2006$ within Gamak Bay, South Korea. CHEMTAX results revealed that diatoms were the dominant taxonomic group in Gamak Bay. In inner Gamak Bay, the ratio between diatoms and cryptophytes was $75\sim80%$, and the ratio between dinoflagellates and cryptophytes was $10\sim15%$. In outer Gamak Bay, the ratio between diatoms and cryptophytes was $85\sim90%$, and the ratio between dinflagellates and cryptophytes was only $1\sim5%$. The population structure was seasonal. Relative diatom populations were less in the summer than the winter season.
Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of different nitrate levels (150, 300, 450, and 600 ppm $KNO_3$) on the volatile compounds and some other properties of pastırma. Methods: Pastırma samples were produced under the controlled condition and analyses of volatile compounds, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) as an indicator of lipid oxidation, non-protein nitrogenous matter content as an indicator of proteolysis, color and residual nitrite were carried out on the final product. The profile of volatile compounds of pastırma samples was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry using a solid phase microextraction. Results: Nitrate level had a significant effect on pH value (p<0.05) and a very significant effect on TBARS value (p<0.01). No significant differences were determined in terms of $a_w$ value, non-protein nitrogenous substance content, color and residual nitrite between pastırma groups produced by using different nitrate levels. Nitrate level had a significant (p<0.05) or a very significant (p<0.01) effect on some volatile compounds. It was determined that the amounts and counts of volatile compounds were lower in the 450 and especially 600 ppm nitrate levels than 150 and 300 ppm nitrate levels (p<0.05). While the use of 600 ppm nitrate did not cause an increase in residual nitrite levels, the use of 150 ppm nitrate did not negatively affect the color of pastırma. However, the levels of volatile compounds decreased with an increasing level of nitrate. Conclusion: The use of 600 ppm nitrate is not a risk in terms of residual nitrite in pastırma produced under controlled condition, however, this level is not suitable due to decrease in the amount of volatile compounds.
