In this study, we successfully synthesized a nano-sized lanthanum-modified lead-titanate (PLT) powder with a perovskite structure using a high-energy mechanochemical process (MCP). In addition, the sintering behavior of synthesized PLT nanopowder was investigated and the sintering temperature that can make the full dense PLT specimen decreased to below $1050^{\circ}C$ by using $Bi_2O_3$ powder as sintering agent. The pure PLT phase of perovskite structure was formed after MCP was conducted for 4 h and the average size of the particles was approximately 20 nm. After sintered at 1050 and $1150^{\circ}C$, the relative density of PLT was about 93.84 and 95.78%, respectively. The density of PLT increased with adding $Bi_2O_3$ and the specimen with the relative densitiy over 96% were fabricated below $1050^{\circ}C$ when 2 wt% of $Bi_2O_3$ was added.
A novel electrode for an NO gas sensor was fabricated from electrospun polyacrylonitrile fibers by thermal treatment to obtain carbon fibers followed by chemical activation to enhance the activity of gas adsorption sites. The activation process improved the porous structure, increasing the specific surface area and allowing for efficient gas adsorption. The gas sensing ability and response time were improved by the increased surface area and micropore fraction. High performance gas sensing was then demonstrated by following a proposed mechanism based on the activation effects. Initially, the pore structure developed by activation significantly increased the amount of adsorbed gas, as shown by the high sensitivity of the gas sensor. Additionally, the increased micropore fraction enabled a rapid sensor response time due to improve the adsorption speed. Overall, the sensitivity for NO gas was improved approximately six-fold, and the response time was reduced by approximately 83% due to the effects of chemical activation.
Pristine and sulfur-doped (LiFe$PO_{3.98}S_{0.03}$) lithium iron phosphates were synthesized by a sol-gel method. The XRD pattern of the prepared materials suggested an orthorhombic structure with a Pnma space group and an absence of impurities. The Li/LiFe$PO_4$ or LiFe$PO_{3.98}S_{0.03}$ cells were employed for cycling studies at various temperatures (25, 50 and $60\;{^{\circ}C}$). In all cases, the Li/LiFe$PO_{3.98}S_{0.03}$ cell showed an improved performance with a stable discharge behavior of ~155 mA$hg^{-1}$. Nevertheless, pristine LiFeP$O_4$ cells presented poor discharge behavior at elevated temperatures, especially $60\;{^{\circ}C}$.
Activated carbon (AC) is one of the most effective adsorbents for organic compounds because of their extended surface area, high adsorption capacity, microporous structure and special surface reactivity. The composites of pH-sensitive hydrogel and activated carbon were prepared in order to improve the loading capacity of drug. The pH-sensitive hydrogel matrix swelled well in the basic condition to release the drug loaded in AC. The release of drug was controlled depending on both the pH due to the ionization of the carboxylic acid group and the AC due to the surface properties.
Alginate-chitosan blend containing coconut-based activated carbon was prepared as a drug delivery carrier in order to improve the loading and releasing capacity of the drug. The activated carbon was incorporated as effective adsorbent for drug due to the extremely high surface area and pore volume, high adsorption capacity, micro porous structure and specific surface activity. Alginate-chitosan blend containing coconut-based activated carbon showed the sustained release for a longer period. Alginate-chitosan blend showed higher release of drug as the pH increased and higher release of drug as the content of chitosan decreased due to the pH-dependent solubility of blend components.
ZSM-5 membrane was prepared on tubular macroporous ${\alpha}$-alumina support using a different synthesis route. The effects of organic template agent and Si/Al ratio of the synthesis gel on morphology, structure, and separation performance of the ZSM-5 membrane used for dehydration of isopropanol were investigated. High water perm-selectivity ZSM-5 membrane with a thickness of about $3.0{\mu}m$ and a low Si/Al ratio of 10.1 was successfully prepared from organotemplate-free synthesis gel with a molar composition of $SiO_2$ : $0.050Al_2O_3$ : $0.21Na_2O$ : NaF : $51.6H_2O$ at $175^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The ZSM-5 membrane exhibited high pervaporation performance with a flux of $3.92kg/(m^2{\cdot}h)$ and corresponding separation factor of higher than 10,000 for dehydration of 90 wt.% isopropanol/water mixture at $75^{\circ}C$.
Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composites with various graphite oxide (GO) contents (0 to 10 wt%) were prepared by sonicating the mixture of PVA and GO, followed by crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. GO was pre-treated with oxyfluorination ($O_2:F_2$ = 8:2) in order to modify the surface of GO to allow it to carry hydrophilic functional groups. PVA/GO composite hydrogels were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR). The morphology of the PVA/GO composite hydrogels and the variations in soluble gel portion were investigated under various GO contents and UV irradiation doses. The variation in the chemical structure of photo degraded PVA/GO composite hydrogels was studied by FT-IR. The photochemical stability of PVA/GO composite hydrogels under UV irradiation was found to improve noticeably with increasing content of uniformly dispersed GO.
As industrialization and urbanization accelerate, environmental issues have moved from local concerns to global issues. Among them, air pollution is the most important issue. Modern people spend more than 88% of their day indoors, but the concentration of fine dust and pollutants flowing indoors is increasing. The indoor environment has its own complexity, and various substances used indoors, such as building materials, furniture, electronics, and cleaning agents, emit chemical substances and cause various diseases. Therefore, when selecting building materials and interior finishing materials, the pollutant emission and adsorption capacity must be greatly considered. These considerations will ensure the construction of a sustainable future environment and a healthy life within that environment. Therefore, in order to reduce the generation of indoor air pollutants, this study aims to examine the fine dust adsorption properties of cement hardening materials using sepiolite, which has a porous structure and high absorption power among clay minerals. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the concentration of fine dust decreased as the addition rate of sepiolite increased. It is believed that the fine dust concentration was reduced due to the high porosity due to the microfibrous structure and large specific surface area of sepiolite, which has a porous structure among clay minerals. It is believed that these experimental results can be used as basic research for future use of sepiolite as a construction material.
