  • Recently with the rapid development in the industries such as an iron mill and chemical plants, these are enlarged by the use of the piping. This piping was encountered the stress corrosion cracking(SCC) because of stress by water pressure and residual stress of welding etc. under industrial water. In this paper, the behaviour of stress corrosion cracking on the weld zone of steel pipe piping water(SPPW) were investigated according to pre-heat before welding in natural seawater(specific resistance : 25$\Omega$-cm). The main results obtained are as follows :1) The stress corrosion cracking for SPPW and SB 41 is most ready to propagate in heat affected zone of weldment. 2) The SCC sensitivity of SPPW on weldment is more susceptible than that of SB 41. 3) The stress corrosion cracking growth of heat affected zone is delayed by the preheat and dry of base metal and electrode before welding.

  • The present study tackles the metallurgical subjects involving the thin slab-direct hot rolling process, i.e. mini-mill process. In order to clarify the effect of chemical composition of steel and MnS precipitation behaviors on the development of edge cracking during hot rolling, the content of manganese and sulfur in low carbon steel was varied and the isothermal treatment prior to roughing was applied. Edge cracking during roughing in the hot-rolling process of mini-mill was effectively prevented by means of the isothermal treatment at 115$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes in the 0.4% manganese steel containing sulfur lower than 0.013%. With the increase in manganese content in low carbon steel, coarser MnS developed. The edge cracking index which denotes the total length of edge crack per unit edge-length of rolled specimens was proposed in this paper. It was found that the edge cracking index linearly decreased with the increase in the ratio of MnS.

  • In fabrication of various welded structures made of high strength steels, the occurence of hydrogen assisted cracking and embrittlement in HAZ is prime importance. The present work was carried out to clarify the effect of chemical compositions, especially B and/or Ti addition on the cold cracking susceptibility and HAZ embrittlement in low crabon equivalent steel. Tests results showed that the addtio of optimum boron content in steel with low Pem value i.e., below 0.20 % was the best way to improve the weldability as well as the mechanicla properties of $60kg/mm^2$ grade quenched and tempered high strength steels.

  • In order to investigate the hot cracking phenomena of the Inconel 690 overlay welds, the hot cracking test(modified Varestraint test) was performed by varying augmented strain and welding speed in GTAW. A total of five kinds of specimens was used in the hot cracking test. The specimens used were two kinds of one layer specimens that were composed of just Inconel 690 deposited metal and three kinds of double layer specimens that were composed with as upper part of Inconel 690 weld metal and lower part of SA508 cl.3 or STS 309L. The main results are as fo11ows: In the welds composed of just Inconel 690, as the augmented strain was more increased and the welding speed was more decreased, the extent of cracking was more increased. And these cracks were mainly solidification cracks, and liquation cracks were also observed partially in HAZ. And hot cracking susceptibily of Inconel 690 welds by using filler metals containing Nb were higher than that of the welds with Nb free. The hot cracking susceptibility of Inconel 690 weld metal was increased with dilution of SA 508 cl.3 and STS 309L, and the influence of SA 508 cl.3 was higher than that of 575 309L. The results of calculation of $TSC\Delta$ and $TLC\Delta$ in Inconel 690 weld metal changed by dilution with base metal or neighboring welds were agreed well with the results of hot cracking test in this study. Therefore, it was expected that the hot cracking was considerably decreased or prevented by using proper welding conditions such as lower heat input, filler metals, base metal and neighboring welds.

  • Thermal cracking is commonly modeled as plug flow reaction, neglecting the lateral gradients present. In this paper, 2-dimensional computational fluid dynamics including turbulence model and molecular reaction scheme are carried out. This simulation is solved by means of coupled implicit scheme for stable convergence of solution. The reactor is modeled as an isothermal tube, whose length is 1.2 m and radius is 0.01 m, respectively. At first, The radial profile of velocity and temperature at each point are predicted in its condition. Then the bulk temperature and conversion curve along the axial direction are compared with other published data to identify the reason why discussed variations of properties are important to product yield. Finally, defining a new non-dimensional number, Effect of interaction with turbulence, heat transfer and chemical reaction are discussed for design of thermal cracking furnace.

  • Molecular sieving carbon (MSC) for separating $O_2-N_2$ and $CO_2-CH_4$ has been prepared through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of methane and benzene on activated carbon spheres (ACS) derived from polystyrene sulfonate beads. The validity of the material for assessment of molecular sieving behavior for $O_2-N_2$ and $CO_2-CH_4$ pair of gases was assessed by the kinetic adsorption of the corresponding gases at $25^{\circ}C$. It was observed that methane cracking on ACS lead to deposition of carbon mostly in whole length of pores rather than in pore entrance, resulting in a reduction in adsorption capacity. MSC showing good selectivity for $CO_2-CH_4$ and $O_2-N_2$ separation was obtained through benzene cracking on ACS with benzene entrantment of $0.40{\times}10^{-4}\;g/ml$ at cracking temperature of $725^{\circ}C$ for a period of 90 minutes resulting in a selectivity of 3.31:1.00 for $O_2-N_2$ and 8.00:1.00 for $CO_2-CH_4$ pair of gases respectively.

  • In order to clarify hot cracking phenomena occurred in Inconel 690 welds and it's prevention, in this study, the cracking behavior and the influence of welding variables on cracking in Inconel 690 overlay welds on Mn-Ni-Cr-Mo steel(SA 508 cl.3) for pressure vessel were investigated by using mock-up test. The main results are as follows: The cracks in Inconel 690 overlay welds were mainly generated near the start and the end part of welding beads adjacent to STS 309L welded outside of Inconel 690 welds. Most of the cracks showed typical solidification crack, and also it was assumed that there was possibility of liquation cracking in HAZ. The existence of Nb constituents or concentration of Nb was recognized on the fracture facets of the solidification cracks in the welds by SMAW. Therefore Nb was considered to be the main factor of the solidification cracking. As the weld heat input was more increased and the weld bead length was longer, the extent of cracking was more increased. Moreover the extent of cracking was considerably decreased by changing of welding sequence to the start and the end part of welds. Hot cracking in welds by GTAW was considerably decreased as compared with that of SMAW. And cracks were well generated in the Inconel 690 overlay welds adjacent to 575 309L welds. This means that the hot cracking susceptibility of Inconel 690 welds was largely varied by chemical components and/or compositions of filter metals, base metals and neighboring welds.

  • The effect of primary solidification phase on the solidification cracking sensitivity, corrosion resistance and toughness at cryogenic temperature was investigated for the austenitic stainless steel welds. The conclusions were summarized as follows; 1. Soldification crack sensitivity of austenitic stainless steel welds depends on the primary solidification mode. 2. Austenitic stainless steels were very susceptible to solidification cracking in case of solidification as primary ${\gamma}$ and immune when solidified as primary $\delta$. 3. When the ratio of Creq/Nieq is in the range of 1.46 to 1.55, the most resistance against solidification cracking was obtained. These results agreed well with the relationship between primary solidification mode, corrosion resistance and toughness at cryogenic temperature. 4. Optimum toughness, corrosion and solidification cracking resistance can be obtained when alloys having chemical compositions described above and solidifies as primary $\delta$ containing no ferrite at room temperature.

  • Environmental Stress Cracking(ESC) is one of the most common causes of unexpected brittle failure of thermoplastic polymers. The exposure of polymers to liquid chemicals tends to accelerate the crazing process, initiating crazes at stresses that are much lower than the stress causing crazing in air. In this study, ESC of acrylonitirile butadiene styrene(ABS) was investigated as a function of the molding conditions such as injection velocity, packing pressure, and melt temperature. A constant strain was applied to the injection molded specimens through a 1.26% strain jig and a mixture of toluene and isopropyl alcohol was used as the liquid chemical. In order to examine the effects of the molding conditions on ESC, an experimental design method was adopted and it was found that the injection velocity was the dominant factor. In addition, predictions from numerical analyses were compared with the experimental results. It was found that the residual stress in the injection molded part was associated with the environmental stress cracking resistance (ESCR).
