  • Here is investigated the characteristics of double-diffusive convection in thermally-stable stratified horizontal fluid layer. By employing an electrochemical technique, and adopting aqueous CuSO$_4$-H$_2$SO$_4$solution as electrolyte, experiments on ionic mass transfer have been conducted systematically. And, also a new mass transfer correlation in double-diffusive situations has been derived by extending the model of micro-scales of turbulence, which was proposed by Arpaci. The resulting correlation of the Sherwood number as a function of the thermal Rayleigh number was in good agreement with the present experimental results. The present study provides plausible understanding in controlling both mass and heat transfer rates for practical situations including double-diffusive convection.

  • Series of m- and p-substituted benzyl derivatives of pyrrole, tetramethyl 1-benzyl-3a,7a-dihydroindole-2,3,3a,4-tetracarboxylate, and trimethyl 1-benzylindole-2,3,4-tricarboxylate were prepared and their 13C NMR spectra were obtained in 0.1 M solutions of chloroform-d. Both single substituent parameter and dual substituent parameter analyses were carried out to correlate the substituent chemical shifts. The ${\beta}$ carbon of the indole series showed the most profound substituent effect dependence as well as the best correlation. The results are explained by the hyperconjugation of the benzyl methylene group.

  • The time correlation functions of concentration fluctuations due to the random forces near the steady state are evaluated for a general two-component nonlinear chemical system by solving the corresponding two dimensional Fokker-Planck equation. The approximate method of solving the Fokker-Planck equation is based on the eigenfunction expansion and the corresponding eigenvalues for both the linear and nonlinear Fokker-Planck operators are obtained near the steady state. The general results are applied to the Lotka model near the oscillatory marginal steady state and the comparison is made between linear and nonlinear cases.

  • Characteristics of minimum fluidization velocity and pressure fluctuations were investigated in an annular fluidized bed whose diameter was 0.102 m and 2.0 m in height. Effects of gas velocity, particle size and bed temperature on the minimum fluidization velocity and pressure fluctuations were examined. The values of minimum fluidization velocity obtained by means of three different methods were very similar each other. The correlation dimension could be a quantitative parameter for expression the resultant complex behavior of gas and solid mixture in the annular fluidized bed. The value of correlation dimension increased with increasing gas velocity, fluidized particle size and temperature in the bed. The minimum fluidization velocity could be determined by means of correlation dimension of pressure fluctuations as well as pressure drop in the bed and standard deviation of pressure fluctuations. The minimum fluidization velocity increased with increasing particle size but decreased with increasing bed temperature in annular fluidized beds. The minimum fluidization velocity was well correlated in therms of correlation dimension as well as operating variables within experimented conditions of this study.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the cause of leaf discoloration occurring frequently in paddy cultivation. Chemical property of soil and inorganic nutrient component of leaf were analyzed on abnormal fields of 7 regions where leaf discoloration occurred severely and normal fields of 7 regions among ginseng garden. The pH of abnormal fields was strong acidic condition (pH 5.51) compare to normal fields of slightly acid condition (pH 6.42). Calcium and magnesium content in abnormal fields were lower distinctly than that of normal fields, while EC, organic matter, phosphate, and potassium content showed not distinct difference between abnormal and normal fields. Whereas calcium and magnesium content were distinctly high in normal fields, both of potassium and iron content of ginseng leaf were distinctly high in abnormal fields. In particular, iron content of abnormal fields was more 1.94 times in soil, and 3.03 times in leaf than that of normal fields. In soil chemical property, there were significant negative correlation between leaf discoloration ratio and soil pH, and there were also significant positive correlation between leaf discoloration ratio and iron content. In ginseng leaf, there were highly significant negative correlation between leaf discoloration ratio and calcium content, and there were also highly significant positive correlation between leaf discoloration ratio and iron content.
