  • The acid-promoted cleavage of the E-and Z-isomers of 1-phenyl-6-neopentyl-1,3,4-trimethyl-1-silacyclohe x-3-ene(II) under various conditions gave clean and nearly quantitative formation of the ring-opened 2,3,7,7-tetramethyl-5-(X)silyl-1-octene products (X=OMe, Cl, OH). The possible mechanism for the formation of the ring-opened products was suggested that the initial protonation of II at C-4 would give a carbocation oriented so that they are ${\beta}$ to the silicon atom, and the subsequent nucleophilic attack at silicon would give rise to the observed products (VI, VII, VIII).

  • (1-Chloro-2,2-dicyanovinyl)benzene or 1,4-bis(1-chloro-2,2-dicyanovinyl)benzene was reacted with 2-amino-phenol to give the model compound, hydroxy enaminonitrile, which was found to undergo thermal cyclization reaction to form the corresponding benzoxazole. This intramolecular cyclization reaction is expected to occur through nucleophilic attack to electropositive enamine carbon by ortho-hydroxy group on the phenyl ring, which is accompanied by the release of neutral malononitrile through rearrangement. From each bifunctional monomer, o-hydroxy substituted polyenaminonitrile was prepared and characterized as a new precursor polymer for well-known aromatic polybenzoxazole. Also the unusual macrocyclic dimer formation from the 1,4-bis(1-chloro-2,2-dicyanovinyl)benzene and 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane polymerization reaction system was discussed. The thermal cyclization reactions and the properties of polymers were investigated using FT-IR and thermal analysis (DSC & TGA).

  • Second order rate constants have been measured spectrophotometrically for reactions of 4-nitrophenyl substituted benzoates with various aryloxides and aryl benzoates with p-chlorophenoxide. The reactivity has exhibited significant dependences on the electronic nature of the substituent in the acyl moiety of the substrate and in the nucleophilic phenoxide, while the substituent in the leaving phenoxide has little influenced the reactivity. The Bronsted coefficient $\beta$ values so obtiained support that the present acyl transfer reaction proceeds via a stepwise mechanism in which the nucleophilic attack would be the rate-determining step. Interestingly, the magnitude of the $\betaacyl$ and $\beta$ nuc increases with increasing reactivity, implying that the reactivity selectivity principle is not operative in the present system. The failure of the reactivity selectivity principle is attributed to a change in transition state structure upon the substituent variation in the present acyl transfer reaction.

  • 2-(2,4,5-Trimethoxyphenyl)-4-methylene-1,3-dioxolane (1b), 2-(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)-4-methylene-1,3-di-oxolane (2b), and 2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-4-methylene-1,3-dioxolane (3b) were prepared and polymerized with boron trifluoride. Boron trifluoride catalyzed reaction proceeded via mainly ring-opening polymerization and cyclization reaction to yield poly(keto ether) and 3(2H)-dihydrofuranone. The yields of polymer and cyclized product exhibited a dependency on the position of the methoxy substituents in the benzene ring of 2-phenyl-4-methylene-1,3-dioxolane derivatives. Electrophilic attack of methylene or oxygen atom on 4-meth-ylene-1,3-dioxolane ring were suggested for the polymerization and cyclization.

  • The kinetics of oxidation of substituted styryl 4-biphenyl ketones and of substituted styryl 2-fluorenyl ketones by pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC) have been studied in 90% acetic acid- 10% water (v/v) containing perchloric acid and NaClO₄ at $10^0,\;20^0,\;30^0$ and 40℃. The reactions are first order in styryl ketones and PCC. The second order rate constants are well correlated only with σ$^+$ constants implying development of positive charge adjacent to benzene ring in the transition state. The effects of varying [HClO₄] and the percentage of acetic acid on the reactions have also been analysed. A mechanism involving nucleophilic attack of PCC leading to an unsymmetric intermediate from which epoxides are formed is proposed.

  • The reaction of chloro(methylthio and arylthio)methanephosphonate (1) and Pummerer-type reaction of sulfinylmethanephosphonate (2) with nucleophiles such as aromatic compounds and thiols were examined. The direct chlorination of (methylthio and arylthio)methanephosphonate with N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) led to the formation of monochlorinated phosphonates (1) in good yield. The reaction of 1 with aromatic compounds and thiols in the presence of stannic chloride afforded a variety of aryl(methylthio)methanephosphonates (3) and thioacetals of formylphosphonates (4), respectively. Phosphonates 3 and 4 were also obtained from the reaction of Pummerer intermediate, generated from sulfinylmethanephosphonate (2), with aromatic compounds and thiols, respectively. A versatile reaction conditions to generate Pummerer intermediate were examined. The best condition was the combination of trifluoroacetic anhydride with stannic chloride. All reactions may involve an initial formation of α-phosphoryl thiocarbocation and a subsequent nucleophilic attack of aromatic compounds and thiols.

  • Kinetic measurements of the 5-nitrofurfural-hydrazine reaction in various pH ranges of aquous solution were carried out by ultraviolet spectrophotometry at $25^{\circ},\;35^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}C$. The observed rate of the reaction varies with the change in pH, which gives characteristic "bell-type" rate acidity profile. The maximum rate is shown in the vicinity of pH 4. This reaction procceds with rate-determining attack of hydrazine on the 5-nitrofurfural at low pH and undergoes a change in rate-determining step to dehydration of the addition intermediate as pH increases. The reaction has a "reactant-like transition state" which precedes intermediate in low pH and "product-like transition state" which follows it in neutral pH. The geometry of 5-nitrofurfural-hydrazine intermediate was estimated with PCILO method associated with CNDO/2 scheme.

  • The aim of this work was to determine the behavior of alloy elements and compounds formed during solidification in the manufacturing process of the CuAgZrCr alloy under an oxidizing environment. Bulk and surface analysis techniques, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Raman and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the phases obtained in the solidification process. In order to focus the analysis on the on grain boundary interface, partial removal of the matrix phase by acid attack was performed. The compositional differences obtained by SEM-EDX, Raman and XPS on post-manufacturing materials allowed us to conclude that the composition of grain boundaries of the alloy is directly influenced by the oxidizing environment of alloy manufacturing.

  • The nucleophilic substitution reactions of Y-aryl ethyl chlorothiophosphates with X-pyridines are studied kinetically in acetonitrile at $55.0^{\circ}C$. The Hammett and Bronsted plots for substituent X variations in the nucleophiles exhibit biphasic concave upwards with a break point at X = 3-Me. The substituents of X = 4-CN and 4-Ac show great positive deviations from both the Hammett and Bronsted plots. The Hammett plots for substituent Y variations in the substrates exhibit biphasic concave upwards with a minimum point at Y = H. The obtained values of the cross-interaction constants (${\rho}_{XY}$) are all in spite of the biphasic free energy correlations for both substituent X and Y variations, since the ${\rho}_X$values with both the strongly and weakly basic pyridines are almost constant. A stepwise mechanism with a rate-limiting leaving group departure from the intermediate is proposed where the distance between X and Y does not vary from the intermediate to the second transition state. A frontside attack is proposed with the strongly basic pyridines based on the considerably great magnitudes of ${\rho}_X$ and ${\beta}_X$ values and a backside attack is proposed with the weakly basic pyridines based on the relatively small magnitudes of ${\rho}_X$ and ${\beta}_X$. The positive deviations of the two strong ${\pi}$-acceptor parasubstituents, X = 4-Ac and 4-CN, from both the Hammett and Bronsted plots are rationalized by the great extents of bond formation and breaking.
