It is essential to use base papers having proper surface characteristics in coating operation for improving coated paper quality and coater runnability. To fulfill these purposes surface sizing of coating base stock with anionic oxidized starch is commonly practiced. It is suggested that use of cationic starch for surface sizing rather than conventional oxidized starch will improve coated paper quality since cationic starch penetrates less into paper structure because of its strong electrostatic interaction with anionically charged paper surface. Strong interaction of cationic surface sizing starch with anionic coating color is expected to promote rapid immobilization of the coating color and improve coating holdout and optical property. The immediate objective of this study was to examine the influence of surface sizing starches on the properties of coated papers. Structural characteristics of the coatings formed on the substrate surface sized with cationic and anionic starches were examined. To enhance the efficiency of cationic surface sizing starch on coated paper properties, strongly charged cationic polymers were added to the surface sizing starch and its effect on coated paper properties was evaluated. Results showed that opacity and light scattering coefficient of coated paper were higher when base paper surface sized with cationic starch was used. Addition of less than 1% of cationic poly-DADMAC to the cationic surface sizing starch improved the opacity of coated paper significantly.

Charged polymer chains, i.e., polyelectrolytes, are known to show superior aqueous lubricating properties compared to those of neutral polymer chains, especially in brush conformation. This is primarily because of the incorporation of a large amount of counterions within the polymer layers and the consequently increased osmotic pressure. However, this effect is active only when the polymer chains remain immobilized even under tribostress, which is not realistic for high-contact pressure tribological applications, especially when they are irreversibly immobilized on tribopair surfaces. In contrast, with free polymers, which can be included as surface-active additives in the base lubricant (water), long-term lubricating performance based on "self-healing" properties is readily expected. In order to assess whether the superior aqueous lubricating properties of polyelectrolyte chains are valid for free polymers too, this study reviews recent studies on the tribological properties of many charged biopolymer and synthetic copolymers at a nonpolar, hydrophobic interface. In contrast to the irreversibly immobilized polyelectrolyte chains, free polyelectrolyte chains show inferior aqueous lubricating properties compared to their neutral counterparts owing to charge accumulation and the consequently impeded surface adsorption on the nonpolar surface. Nevertheless, bovine submaxillary mucin (BSM), a representative biopolymer, shows a sufficiently effective surface adsorption and aqueous lubricating capabilities even at neutral pH without losing the polyanionic characteristics.
Various charged homogeneous membranes were fabricated by blending of ionic polymer with a non-ionic polymer with different ratios. In this study. sodium alginate, chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) were employed as anionic. cationic and non-ionic polymers, respectively. The permcation and separation behaviors of aquCOll::; salt solutions have been investigated through the charged membranes. As the content of ionic polymer increases in the membrane, the hydrophilicity of the membrane increases and pure water flux as well as solution flux increases correspondingly, indicating that the permeation performance through the membrane is cletemunecl mainly by its hydrophilicity-, Electrostatic interaction between the charged membrane and ionic solute molecules, that is. Donnan exclusion was observed to be attributed to salt rejection to a great deal of extent, and molecular sieve mechanism was effective [or the separation of the salt solution under a similar electrostatic circumstance of solutes.
To maintain activity in a coenzyme/enzyme mixture system, such as ${\beta}$-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH)/dehydrogenase, the water-soluble 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) polymers as an additive were synthesized and investigated for their stabilizing function. The inhibitor for the NADH/dehydrogenase reaction was spontaneously formed when the NADH was stored in the dehydrogenase solution. Therefore, we hypothesized that if the additive polymer could interact with an inhibitor without any adverse effect on the dehydrogenase, the activity in the NADH/dehydrogenase mixture could be maintained. We selected lactose dehydrogenase (LDH) as the enzyme, and the NADH was dissolved and incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ in the LDH solution containing the polymers. The phospholipid polymers used in this study were poly(MPC) (PMPC), poly(MPC-co-3-trimethylammonium-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate chloride) (PMQ) and poly[MPC-co-potassium 3-methacryloyloxypropyl sulfonate ($MSO_3$)] ($PMMSO_3$). The poly($MSO_3$) was used as a reference. For the PMQ and $PMSO_3$ aqueous solutions, the activity of the NADH/LDH mixture system decreased with incubation time as the same level or lower than that in the Tris buffered solution in the absence of the polymers. However, for the poly($MPC-co-MSO_3$) ($PMMSO_3$) aqueous solution, the activity of the NADH/LDH mixed system was six times higher than that in the buffered solution even after a 3-days incubation. The LDH activity was 1.5-1.8 times higher in the presence of the $PMMSO_3$ compared with that in the $PMSO_3$ solution. The mixture of two polymers, poly(MPC) and poly($MSO_3$), did not produce any stabilization. Thus, both the MPC and $MSO_3$ units in the polymer chain had important and cooperative effects for stabilizing the NADH/LDH mixture.

Spacecrafts such as most of commercial satellites that are operating in the geostationary orbit can be subjected to intense irradiation by charged particles. The surface made of dielectric materials can therefore become probable sites for damaging electrostatic discharges. Thanks to a specially equipped chamber, the spatial environment can be reproduced experimentally in the laboratory. In this paper, the behavior of high energy electrons injected in polymers such as PolyMethylMetaAcrylate (PMMA) and Kapton is studied. Results obtained by surface potential technique, pulse-electro acoustic device and a cell based on the split Faraday cup system are analyzed and discussed.

The ionic layer-by-layer (LBL) assembled films can be formed by sequentially dipping of substrates to oppositely charged polyions solution in the multilayer, called polyelectrolytes multilayer (PEM) films. Easy way of these assemblies of charged polymers offer the ability to adjust important parameters such as controllability of thickness in the nanometer-scale level and functionality of most top layer of PEM films. Nevertheless, we do not know of any trials to fabricate PEM organic films into nanometer size. Herein, we show the integration of the LBL technique with DPN in fabricating nanometer size patterns of multilayered polyelectrolyte structures. Through the use of single and multiple cantilever AFM probes, we demonstrate the parallel writing capabilities of DPN.

In this study, the characteristic of charging current which flows into the polymer by applying the corona discharge carriers on the polymer surface was measured, so as to investigate the phenomenon of charge injection and movement if injected charge on polymer. Also. the characteristics of discharge current which flows by shorting both sides of corona charged polymers were measured. Experimental results are as follows; The amount of charges injected by corona discharge vary according to the state of surface and the type of carriers, and then the charging current varies according to the properties of injected carriers.

Charged particle in the polymers is supposed to affect the electrical conduction and to lead them th dielectrical breakdown finally. So we measured the space charge distribution made by application of high electric field and evaluated the polarity of the charged particle affected on electrical conduction and space charge formed in the insulating materials by using temperature gradient thermally stimulated current measurement method(TG-TSC measurement). As a result, in the cross-linked polyethylene, A-peak was caused from dipole polarization, C-peak was caused from ionic space charge polarization and D-peak was injected trap hole. Also we found it crossible the evaluated the polarity of injected trap carrier and electron(or hole) of carrier trap in the cross-lined polyethylene. We found that ${\gamma}$-ray irradiated low density polyethylene had a relation to the electronic trap and we also could get the value of electric field distribution in the samples of which evaluation was available.
For screening test of the non-volatile compounds which migrate from food packaging materials into foodstuffs, the traditional high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) systems suffer from the lack of universal detector with high sensitivity and universality and high efficiency HPLC separation column which provides complete separation of complex mixtures into all individual substances. In this work, the use possibility of online two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) system coupled with a charged aerosol detector (CAD), a universal detector, was reviewed. 2D-LC system permits to improve peak capacity and resolving power for complex mixtures. Charged aerosol detector (CAD) offers a new feasibility for detection of any non-volatile compounds with high sensitivity and constant response factor in a calibration range. The combination of size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and normal phase HPLC (NP-HPLC) is most frequently used for the separation of the natural and synthetic polymers which are mainly used as raw materials for the manufacture of food packaging materials. However, there is no commercial software available for data acquisition and handling and therefore the quantification in 2D-LC analysis is still rare.
Charge decay, thermally stimulated current(TSC), charging and discharging currents(I) are measured for negatively corona-charged polymers. In this study, we will make an experiment in charge decay on polymer surface, TSC, polarity effect and the others in order to analysis it's mechanism. Especially polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) film is the best functional material which has been so far. Therefore, It's worthy of notice to investigate it's characteristic. And then some other functional polymers will be focused on. An experimental result was missed out for the shortage of setting. So, this thesis will be explained on the theory and direction of reseach hereafter.
