The cause of optical nonlinearity induced in thermally poled silica glass is believed to be the space charge polarization. Since the second order optical nonlinearity (electro-optic effect) can be used in optical switches the optical nonlinearity in silica glass has drawn a large attention. Space charge polarization occurs when an ionic conducting material is subjected to dc electric field by the blocking electrode. Thermal poling performed to induce the optical nonlinearity in silica glass is basically identical to the process generating space charge polarization. As a first step to understand the mechanism of space charge polarization in silica glass hence the induced optical nonlinearity the absorption currents as functions of time were measured for various types of silica glasses and analyzed by the theory of space charge polarization. It was found that the electrical relaxation exhibited a step by the space charge polarization in the relatively long time range and dielectric loss peak showed a maximum at a specific temperature which is depending on type of silica glass. It was turned out that this relaxation might be a cause of nonlinearity in electrical conductivity of silica glass.
The interfacial charge distribution was investigated using PE laminate system. It was found that a proper treatment of the interlace could decrease the amount of charge accumulated at the interfaces. High lamination temperature and long lamination time brought about little interfacial charge. It was also observed that the interfacial charge could be decreased by the addition of chemicals which had charge trap or hopping site.
On the basis of a simple modified Poisson-Boltzmann (SMPB) theory, taking into account the finite ionic size, the analytic expression for the effect of ionic size on the diffuse layer potential drop at negative charge densities has been given for the simple 1:1 electrolyte. It is shown that the potential drop across the diffuse layer depends on the size of the ions in the electrolyte. For a given electrolyte concentration and electrode charge density, the diffuse layer potential drop in a small ion system is smaller than that in a large ion system. It is also displayed that the diffuse layer potential drop is always less than the value of the Gouy-Chapman (GC) theory, and the deviation increases as the electrode charge density increases for a given electrolyte concentration. These theoretical results are consistent with the results of the Monte-Carlo simulation [Fawcett and Smagala, Electrochimica Acta 53, 5136 (2008)], which indicates the importance of including steric effects in modeling diffuse layer properties.

We studied threshold voltages and I-V characteristics. considering short channel effect of the fully depleted thin film n-channel SOI MOSFET. We presented a charge sharing model when the back surface of short channel shows accumulation depletion and inversion state respectively. A degree of charge sharing can be compared according to each of back-surface conditions. Mobility is not assumed as constant and besides bulk mobility both the mobility defined by acoustic phonon scattering and the mobility by surface roughness scattering are taken into consideration. I-V characteristics is then implemented by the mobility including vertical and parallel electric field. kThe validity of the model is proved with the 2-dimensional device simulation (MEDICI) and experimental results. The threshold voltage and charge sharing region controlled by source or drain reduced with increasing back gate voltage. The mobility is dependent upon scattering effect and electric field. so it has a strong influence on I-V characteristics.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of peptide charge on the interaction between peptide and poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) for evaluating mechanism of acylated peptide formation in PLGA matrix. As a model peptide, octreotide, a synthetic somatostatin analogue and active ingredient of commercial PLGA product, was used. The disulfide group of octreotide was reduced with dithiothreitol and the sulfhydryl groups were modified with N-${\beta}$-maleimidopropionic acid (BMPA) to neutralize octreotide with positive charge in physiological conditions. The BMPA-conjugated octreotide was identified by measuring the molecular mass with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. In the interaction study with PLGA, native octreotide showed initial adsorption to PLGA and substantial production of acylated peptides (56% of overall peptide), whereas BMPA-conjugated octreotide showed minimal adsorption to PLGA and no acylation products for 42 days. Consequently, the neutralization of octreotide completely inhibited the peptide acylation by preventing interaction of peptide with PLGA. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the initial polymer interaction of peptide is important step for peptide acylation in PLGA matrix and suggests the modulation of peptide charge as strategy for inhibiting the formation of acylated peptide impurities.

An electret filter is composed of permanently charged electret fibers and is widely used in applications requiring high collection efficiency and low-pressure drop. In this work, the collection efficiency of the filter media used in manufacturing cabin air filters was investigated by using poly-disperse particles when submicron particles were loaded. Long-term experiments were conducted by applying two different charging states, which were spray electrification and charge equilibrium by bipolar ionization. In order to investigate the effect of particle loading in filter media, NaCl particles were generated from 0.1% and 1% solutions by an atomizer. Liquid DOS particles were used to evaluate the effect of liquid particles on the collection efficiency of an electret filter. The results show significant effect of charge amount and size distribution of loading particles on the collection performance of a filter media in submicron region. Smaller particles loaded in electret fibers cause a more rapid degradation in collection efficiency and have lower minimum efficiency with time. The pressure drop of a filter media do rarely increase when the collection efficiency decreases to the minimum value. For the larger particles charged by spray electrification, which have charge amounts more than that of Boltzmann equilibrium charge distribution, the pressure drop of a filter media slowly increases in comparison with that of equilibrium charged particles. For DOS particles it is shown that the charging level of an electret filter severely decreases and the collection efficiency is below 10% in some particle size range.
The effect of anionic polyelectrolytes, poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and poly(vinylsulfonate) (PVS), on the charge transfer complexing between indole derivatives and methyl viologen($MV^{++}$) cation was investigated. The results were compared with effect of NaCl and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS). Both PSS and PVS enhanced the complex formation of neutral species (indole and indole acetate at low pH), zwitter ionic tryptophan, and positively charged tryptamine and tryptophan at low pH with $MV^{++}$. This result was attributed to the contribution of hydrophobic interaction, in addition to electrostatic interaction. The enhancing effect of PSS was much higher than that of PVS reflecting the higher hydrophobicity of PSS. The interaction between indole acetate anion and $MV^{++}$ was greatly reduced by addition of PVS and PSS. The higher charge density of PVS was appeared as greater reducing effect indicating the importance of electrostatic force in this case. In all cases, the effect of polyelectrolytes showed maxima, and further addition of PVS and PSS decreased the effect. This behavior was explained in terms of distribution of indole derivatives and $MV^{++}$ in domain of polyanions. The complex formation constants and molar absorptivities of complexes were determined, and the values were compared with those in water and SDS solutions.

Charge transfer through DNA oligonucleotides has been investigated for potential applications of DNA into molecular electrooptic switching devices. Electrons were injected using gold electrode probes where DNA oligomers were adsorbed that are separated in medium. The results show that increased adsorption of DNA reduces the ionization current due to the combined effect of charge transfer through DNA and surface-limited charge transport. The probe-based charge injection was extended to examine the capability of extinguishing fluorescence of Cy3 dye molecules attached to DNA. It is expected that the results may be employed to implementing a novel electrooptic switching device based on DNA molecules.

With the NAND Flash scaling down, it becomes more and more difficult to follow Moore's law to continue the scaling due to physical limitations. Recently, three-dimensional (3D) flash memories have introduced as an ideal solution for ultra-high-density data storage. In 3D flash memory, as the process reason, we need to use poly-Si TFTs instead of conventional transistors. So, after combining charge trap flash (CTF) structure and poly-Si TFTs, the emerging device SONOS-TFTs has also suffered from some reliability problem such as hot carrier degradation, charge-trapping-induced parasitic capacitance and resistance which both create interface traps. Charge pumping method is a useful tool to investigate the degradation phenomenon related to interface trap creation. However, the curves for charge pumping current in SONOS TFTs were far from ideal, which previously due to the fabrication process or some unknown traps. It needs an optimization and the important geometrical effect should be eliminated. In spite of its importance, it is still not deeply studied. In our work, base-level sweep model was applied in SONOS TFTs, and the nonideal charge pumping current was optimized by adjusting the gate pulse transition time. As a result, after the optimizing, an improved charge pumping current curve is obtained.

Crack-controlled blasting method which utilizes notched charge hole has been proposed in order to achieve smooth fracture plane and minimize the excavation damage zone. In this study, the blast models, which have a notched charge hole, were analyzed using dynamic fracture process analysis software to investigate the effect of the geometry of a notched charge hole and decoupling indexes of the charge hole on crack growth control in blasting. As a result, crack extension increased and damage crack decreased with the notch length. Ultimately, stress increment factors and resultant fracture patterns with different notch length and width were analyzed in order to examine the effect factors on the crack growth controlling in rock blasts using a notched charge hole.
