  • A high heat flux test facility using a graphite heating panel was constructed and is presently in operation at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, which is called KoHLT-1. Its major purpose is to carry out a thermal cycle test to verify the integrity of a HIP (hot isostatic pressing) bonded Be mockups which were fabricated for developing HIP joining technology to bond different metals, i.e., Be-to-CuCrZr and CuCrZr-to-SS316L, for the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) first wall. The KoHLT-1 consists of a graphite heating panel, a box-type test chamber with water-cooling jackets, an electrical DC power supply, a water-cooling system, an evacuation system, an He gas system, and some diagnostics, which are equipped in an authorized laboratory with a special ventilation system for the Be treatment. The graphite heater is placed between two mockups, and the gap distance between the heater and the mockup is adjusted to $2{\sim}3\;mm$. We designed and fabricated several graphite heating panels to have various heating areas depending on the tested mockups, and to have the electrical resistances of $0.2{\sim}0.5$ ohms during high temperature operation. The heater is connected to an electrical DC power supply of 100 V/400 A. The heat flux is easily controlled by the pre-programmed control system which consists of a personal computer and a multi function module. The heat fluxes on the two mockups are deduced from the flow rate and the coolant inlet/out temperatures by a calorimetric method. We have carried out the thermal cycle tests of various Be mockups, and the reliability of the KoHLT-1 for long time operation at a high heat flux was verified, and its broad applicability is promising.

  • After the model open-ended pile attached with strain gages was driven into a pressure chamber, in which the saturated microfine sand was contained, the static compression loading test was performed for that pile. Based on the test results, ultimate pile capacity was determined. Then, either simulated earthquake shaking or sinusoidal shaking was applied to the pile with the sustained certain level OP ultimate pile load. Then, pile capacity degradations characteristics during shaking were studied. Pile capacity degradation during two different shakings were greatly different. During the simulated earthquake shaking, capacity degradation depended upon the magnitude of applied load. When the load applied to the pile top was less than 70% of ultimate pile capacidy, pile capacity degradation rate was less than 8%, and pile with the sustained ultimate pile load had the degradation rate of 90%. Also, most of pile capacity degradation was reduced in outer skin friction and degradation rate was about 80% of ultimate pile capacity reduction. During sinusoidal shaking, pile capacity degradation did not depend on the magnitude of applied load. It depended on the amplitude and the frequency , the larger the amplitude and the fewer the frequency was, the higher the degradation rate was. Reduction pattern of unit soil plugging (once depended on the mode of shaking. Unit soil plugging force by the simulated earthquake shaking was reduced in the bottom 3.0 D, of the toe irrespective of the applied load, while reduction of unit soil plugging force by sinusoidal shaking was occurred in the bottom 1.0-3.0D, of the toe. Also, the soil plugging force was reduced more than that during simulated earthquake shaking and degradation rate of the pile capacity depended on the magnitude of the applied load.

  • Maintenance on the water chamber of steam generator, the change of pressurizer heater, the removal of pressure tube feeder, and so on during outage in nuclear power plants (NPPs) has a likelihood of high radiation exposure to whole body of workers even short time period due to the high radiation exposure rates. In particular, it is expected that hands would receive the highest radiation exposure because of its contact with radiation materials. In this study, field tests on extremity dose assessment of radiation workers for contact works with high radiation exposure were conducted during the maintenance periods in Korean pressurized water reactors (PWRs) and pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs). In this field test, radiation workers were required to wear additional TLDs on the back and wrist, and an extremity dosimeter on fingers including a main TLD on the chest, while performing maintenance. As a result, it was found that the equivalent dose for fingers was distributed in the fixed range of deep dose and the equivalent dose for wrists.

  • Generally, X-ray examinations for dentistry use low energy radiation. It explains that the radiations are mainly absorbed to a human body because of the weak permeability. We made up some counterplans for decrease in radiation exposure, when guardians and radiologists are overexposed owing to unavoidable circumstances. The equipments for the test are GX-770 and CRANEX TOME CEPH which are used for various exams. Besides we measured the radiations in the projection room and in the control room using model 2026c and 20X6-1800. According to the test, the measurement value in the control room was low dose below $20{\mu}R$, the maximum dose in the projection room was $702.8{\mu}R$ and the measurement value of back dose was higher than lateral one. As the result, if we use a shielding door, it's effective for radioprotection and when we didn't prepare protectors, we should secure appropriate distance and be situated at the side area($90{\sim}135^{\circ}$) on the basis of centeral radiation. That way will provide valuable aid for radioprotection.

  • An injector that uses methane gas ($CH_4$) and liquid oxygen ($LO_x$) as propellants was designed to verify the combustion characteristics of an engine that uses methane, which is one of the next-generation propellants. A swirl/shear coaxial-type injector was used, and flow analysis was performed using Fluent to determine the main design parameters of the injector. A hydraulic test was performed to understand the atomization and spray pattern characteristics of the injector. Next, a combustion test was performed at the design point to understand the ignition and combustion stability. Additional combustion tests were performed according to the O/F ratio to investigate the combustion characteristics and stabilities using the characteristic exhaust velocity ($C^*$) and fluctuation of the chamber pressure. The experimental results showed that the combustion efficiency was greater than 90%, and the pressure fluctuation was lower than 2% under all conditions.

  • BACKGROUND: Salt accumulation in coastal reclaimed soil can decrease plant growth and productivity, which could lead to considerable variation of methane($CH_4$) emission in a rice paddy. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of salt concentration on $CH_4$ emission in a coastal reclaimed soil. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effect of salt concentration on $CH_4$ emission and rice growth characteristics was studied by pot test, which packed by reclaimed paddy soils collected from Galsa, Hadong, Gyeongnam province. Electrical conductivity(EC) of each treatment was controlled by 0.98, 2.25, 5.05 and 9.48 dS/m and $CH_4$ emission was characterized a week interval by closed chamber method during rice cultivation. The $CH_4$ emission rate was significantly decreased with increase of salt accumulation, but total $CH_4$ flux in EC 5.50 dS/m treatment was lower than those of EC 9.48 dS/m treatment. It seems because of higher content of water soluble $SO{_4}^{2-}$ in EC 5.50 dS/m treatment than those of EC 9.48 dS/m treatment. Rice growth and grain yield were significantly decreased with increase of salt accumulation. Soil properties, especially EC and pH were negatively correlated with $CH_4$ flux, while rice growth characteristics like plant height and tiller number show significantly positive correlation with $CH_4$ flux. CONCLUSION(S): Conclusively, salt accumulation significantly decreased $CH_4$ flux in a rice paddy, which could be useful information for evaluating $CH_4$ flux in reclaimed area in Korea.

  • The aim of this study was to establish the optimal conditions to design a shoe rack that could effectively sterilize and deodorize shoes contaminated by various bacteria. The manufacture and evaluation of a shoe rock was conducted for one year from October 2014 to September 2015. The antibacterial efficacies were evaluated using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by JIS Z 2801:2010. The deodorization efficiency was identified by the standard method for deodorization efficiency evaluation of an indoor air cleaner established by Korea Air Cleaning Association, SPS-KACA002-132:2006. The results showed that antibacterial evaluation showed more than 99.9% of the sterilization effects on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus after exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light for 30 seconds. The average deodorization efficiency for the test gases was 42.5%. The temperature in the shoes and in the shoe rack was lower than $40^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively, when the UV lamp was turned on for 5 minutes and off for 25 minutes repeatedly. This was controlled by turning the UV lamp on and off to maintain the appropriate temperature in the shoes. In conclusion, the real deodorization efficiency is expected to be higher than the measured value because the internal volume of the shoe rack was smaller than the test chamber used to measure the deodorization efficiency. The deodorization effect could be increased further by the sterilization of bacteria causing bad odors in shoes. Further studies will be needed to determine the temperature deviations within the shoe rack to provide constant conditions.

  • Bearing capacity of pile is governed by only skin friction in frozen ground condition, while it is generally governed both by skin friction and end bearing capacity in typically unfrozen ground condition. Skin friction force, which arises from the interaction between pile and frozen soils, is defined as adfreeze bond strength, and adfreeze bond strength is one of the most important key parameters for design of pile in frozen soils. Many studies have been carried out in order to analyze adfreeze bond strength characteristics over the last fifty years. However, many studies for adfreeze bond strength have been conducted with limited circumstances, since adfreeze bond strength is sensitively affected by various influence factors such as intrinsic material properties, pile surface roughness, and externally imposed testing conditions. In this study, direct shear test is carried out inside of large-scaled freezing chamber in order to analyze the adfreeze bond strength characteristics with varying freezing temperature and normal stress. Also, the relationship between adfreeze bond strength and shear strength of the frozen soil obtained from previous study was analyzed. The coefficient of adfreeze bond strength was evaluated in order to predict adfreeze bond strength based on shear strength, and coefficients suggested from this and previous studies were compared.

  • As an attempt to reduce the consumption of petroleum resources and to improve the performance of a kerosene engine, a series of experiments was conducted using several kinds of ethanol-kerosene blends under the various compression ratios. The engine used in this study was a single-cylinder, four-cycle kerosene engine having a compression ratio of 4.5. To investigate the feasibility of ethanol-kerosene blends in the original engine, kerosene and blends of 5-percent, 10-percent, and 20-percent-ethanol, by volume, with kerosene were used. And to investigate the feasibility of improving the performance of the kerosene engine, a portion of the cylinder head was cut off to increase the compression ratio up to 5.0 by reducing the combustion chamber volume. Kerosene and blends of 30-percent and 40-percent-ethanol, by volume, with kerosene were used for the modified engine with an increased compression ratio. Variable speed tests at wide-open throttle were also conducted at five speed levels in the range of 1000 to 2200 rpm for each compression ratio and fuel type. Volumetric efficiency, engine torque, and brake specific fuel consumption were determined, and brake thermal efficiency based on the lower heating values of kerosene and ethanol was calculated. The results obtained in the study are summarized as follows: A. Test with the original engine: (1) No abnormal conditions were found when burning ethanol-kerosene blends in the original engine. (2) Volumetric efficiency increased with ethanol concentration in blends. When burning blends of 5-percent, 10-percent, and 20-percent ethanol, by volume, with kerosene, average volumetric efficiency increased 1.6 percent, 2.6 percent, and 4.1 percent respectively, than when burning kerosene. (3) Mean engine torque increased 5.2 percent for 5-percent-ethanol blend, 9.3 percent for 10-percent-ethanol blend, and 11.5 percent for 20-percent-ethanol blend than for kerosene. Increase in engine torque when using ethanol-kerosene blends was due to the improved combustion characteristics of ethanol as well as an increase in volumetric efficiency. (4) Up to ethanol concentration of 20 percent, mean brake specific fuel consumption was nearly constant inspite of the difference in heating value between ethanol and kerosene. (5) Brake thermal efficiency increased 0.3 percent for 5-percent-ethanol blend, 3.8 percent for 10-percent-ethanol blend, and 6.8 percent for 20-percent-ethanol blend than for kerosene. B. Test with the modified engine with an increased compression ratio: (1) When burning kerosene, mean volumetric efficiency, engine torque, and brake thermal efficiency were somewhat lower than for the original engine. (2) Engine torque increased 15.1 percent for 30-percent-ethanol blend and 18.4 percent for 40-percent-ethanol blend than for kerosene. (3) There was no significant difference in brake specific fuel consumption regardless of ethanol concentration in blends. (4) Brake thermal efficiency increased 15.0 percent for 30-percent-ethanol blend and 19. 5 percent for 40-percent-ethanol blend than for kerosene.

  • This study evaluated the potential of methodology development of the helical type anchor for soft ground applications. The rotational penetration of the helix structure might make construction-steps easy without the soil spitting and reusable rods could reduce the material cost. Removal of the anchors would be simple as a construction, which can be named the removal anchor. The anchoring resistance after construction is strongly related to the number of helixes resulting in a concise design process. The investigation involved a chamber test with soft soils. In the test, a specially designed and fabricated helical anchor and torque-driver were used to obtain the maximum pull-out resistance of the anchor after rotational penetration. As a result of the tests, The rotational torque and pull-out resistance have a proportional relationship with the strength of the prepared soils. Within the range of the study, the torque of the anchor penetrating increased with increasing pull-out resistance.
