  • This paper examines the suitability of using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools, ANSYS-CFX, as an initial analysis tool for predicting the drag and propulsion performance (thrust and torque) of a concept underwater vehicle design. In order to select an appropriate thruster that will achieve the required speed of the Underwater Disk Robot (UDR), the ANSYS-CFX tools were used to predict the drag force of the UDR. Vertical Planar Motion Mechanism (VPMM) test simulations (i.e. pure heaving and pure pitching motion) by CFD motion analysis were carried out with the CFD software. The CFD results reveal the distribution of hydrodynamic values (velocity, pressure, etc.) of the UDR for these motion studies. Finally, CFD bollard pull test simulations were performed and compared with the experimental bollard pull test results conducted in a model basin. The experimental results confirm the suitability of using the ANSYS-CFX tools for predicting the behavior of concept vehicles early on in their design process.

  • The objectives of this research were to evaluate the pressurized/the main inlet water flowrate ratio which have been used as the most important parameter for operating the pump diffusion mixer until now, to suggest the alternative operating parameter and the relating criteria if the flowrate ratio was not inadequate. For the objectives of this research, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was conducted for 21 cases of flowrate ratio in full-scaled pump diffusion mixer. From the results of CFD simulation, the local velocity gradient values were calculated in each case in order to analyze the simulation results in more detail. For verifying CFD simulation, wet test was conducted. The wet test was to measure the factual coagulant dispersion distribution at a distance of 5.4m from deflector. From both results of CFD simulation and wet test, flowrate ratio was inadequate as operating parameter or criteria, on the other hand the pressurized/the main inlet velocity ratio(dimensionless) was useful in predicting the performance of pump diffusion mixer. Also, the injected coagulant could be dispersed evenly in overall cross section on the condition that pressurized/the main inlet velocity ratio(dimensionless) is over at least 20.

  • This paper presents a Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) based simulation and experimental tracer test of flow pattern and turbulent energy dissipation inside a serpentine flocculation basin with continuous operation. Research focused on the evaluation of a specific flow pattern on the hydraulic behavior on the flocculation basin. From the results of CFD simulation and actual tracer test, both results were in good accordance with each other. Also, each Morill index were calculated as 1.5 from CFD simulation and 1.7 from actual tracer test, respectively. Especially, turbulence energy was dissipated relatively higher in the vicinity of inlet to the flocculation basin than other region. The differences between the CFD simulation and actual tracer test were 1.4 min in $T_{50}$, and 1.3 min in $T_p$, respectively.

  • PURPOSES : In this paper, the flow of construction material was simulated using computational fluid dynamics in a 2D axisymmetric condition to evaluate the effect of initial or varying material properties on the final shape of a specimen. METHODS : The CFD model was verified by using a well-known analytical solution for a given test condition followed by performing a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the effect of material properties on the final shape of material. Varying dynamic viscosity and yield stress were also considered. RESULTS : The CFD model in a 2D axisymmetric condition agreed with the analytical solution for most yield stress conditions. Minor disagreements observed at high yield stress conditions indicate improper application of the pure shear assumption for the given material behavior. It was also observed that the variation of yield stress and dynamic viscosity during curing had a meaningful effect on the final shape of the specimen. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that CFD modeling in a 2D axisymmetric condition is good enough to evaluate fluidal characteristics of material. The model is able to consider varying yield stress and viscosity during curing. The 3D CFD-DEM coupled model may be required to consider the interaction of aggregates in fluid.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the installed performance of the PW206C turbo shaft engine used in the development of the smart UAV(Unmanned Ariel Vehicle) by KARI(Korean Aerospace Research Institute). It mainly aims to investigate performance behavior at installed conditions using both inlet and exhaust losses generated by CFD analysis of the ducts. The ways employed to be able to analyze the performance extensively were mainly rallied out by performing design point analysis of the engine where the performance simulation results from the commercial program 'GASTURB 9' used for simulation were used as inlet boundary condition for the ducts in CFD program The use of CFD tool involve modeling of the ducts to conform with the stipulated shape and sizes as defined by KARI with a grid density that allows reasonable flow characteristics applicable to aircraft components. Respective values of Shaft horse power obtained by varying flight Mach number, Gas generator RPM and Altitude considering several losses inclusive of those estimated by use of CFD tool were then plotted at three conditions with the ECS-OFF, ECS-MAX and at un-installed condition. Reasonable results were obtained as a result of using computational fluid dynamics that can hence be justified as an alternative tool for use in future flow analysis of engine and components.

  • The Francis-99 is a workshop initiated by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway, and Lulea University of Technology (LTU), Sweden, in order to further validate the capabilities of the CFD technologies. The goal of the first workshop is to determine the state of the art of numerical predictions for steady operating conditions. When performing the CFD analysis, some geometry details are often neglected. In case of Francis Turbine, labyrinth seals are usually not include in the simulation domain, this may lead to inaccurate prediction of turbine efficiency. In this study, the CFD analysis for Francis-99 Workshop model has been performed for full domain of machine including top and bottom labyrinth seals. The efficiency value and distribution of velocity and pressure have been investigated and compared to the experimental data obtained from NTNU. By comparing the results, it was found that: With the top and bottom labyrinth seals in the domain, the CFD result was significantly improved in prediction of efficiency at all the operating point, especially at part load.

  • boiling flow in vertical tube. The multiphase flow model used in this CFD analysis is the two-fluid model in which liquid(water) and gas(vapour) are considered as continuous and dispersed fluids, respectively. A wall boiling model is also used to simulate the subcooled boiling heat transfer at the heated wall boundary. The diameter and heated length of tube are 0.0154 m and 2 m, respectively. The system pressure in tube is 4.5 MPa and the inlet subcooling is 60 K. The near-wall grid size in the non-dimensional wall unit for lqiuid phase ($y^+_{w,l}$) was examined from 101 to 313 at the outlet boundary. The CFD calculations predicted the void distributions as well as the liquid and wall temperatures in tube. The predicted axial variations of the void fraction and the wall temperature are compared with the measured ones. The CFD prediction of the wall temperature is shown to slightly depend on the near-wall grid size but the axial void prediction has somewhat large dependency. The CFD prediction was found to show a better agreement with the measured one for the large near-wall grid, e.g., $y^+_{w,l}$ > 300 at the tube exit.

  • CFD simulation is widely used in various industries, universities and research centers. In Korea most of the researchers use foreign commercial S/W packages especially in industries. But commercial CFD packages have some problems as limit to source code and very high license foe. So from several years ago open source CFD code has been widely spread as an alternative. But in Korea there are a few users of open source code. Insufficiency of performance validation as for accuracy, robustness, convenience and parallel speed-up is important obstacles of open source code. So we tested some validation cases as to incompressible external aerodynamics and internal flaws and now are doing compressible flaws. As the first stage of compressible flow validation, we simulated Korea next generation high speed train(HEMU). It's running condition is 400km/hr and maximum Mach number reaches up to 0.4. With the high speed train we tested accuracy, robustness and parallel performance of open source CFD code OpenFOAM Because there isn't experimental data we compared results with widely used commercial code. When use $1^{st}$ order upwind scheme aerodynamic forces are very similar to commercial code. But using $2^{nd}$ order upwind scheme there was some discrepancy. The reason of the difference is not clear yet. Mesh manipulation, domain decomposition, post-processing and robustness are satisfactory. Paralle lperformance is similar to commercial code.

  • Dust released from the rotating timber cutting process causes various kinds of diseases as well as safety issues. Although there were lots of efforts to reduce the amount of dust by installing large-sized dust collectors or by using expensive high-quality cutters, they proved to be not so effective. In this study we want to modify and improve the design of the rotary cutter system to prevent dust from being released to the environment as possible by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. We have developed CFD models of the conventional cutter and several design modifications. Through the CFD analysis the characteristics of the air flow was predicted, and then the behavior of dust produced during the cutting process was analyzed for different designs. The most efficient design feature to capture dust inside the cutter as much as possible was chosen based on the CFD analysis results. Finally the prototype of the ratary saw machine was constructed and tested to check the dust capturing efficiency, which result is reasonably consistent with the predicted performance through the CFD analysis.
