Hihg-toughened ceria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia ceramics with irregular grain shape and undulated grain boundary was prepared by ceria doping. Irregularity of grain shapes was increased with the amount of doped ceria. But in case of the large amount of doped ceria grain boundary was migrated to the reverse direction of DIGM. Ceria-stabilized zirconia ceramics annealed at 1650$^{\circ}C$ for 2h after twice dippings into cerium nitrate solu-tion of 0.2M and sintering at 1500$^{\circ}C$ for 2h showed the highest grain boundary length with a value of 23.6$\mu\textrm{m}$ Ceria concentration difference between convex and concave sides in irregular grains was observed over 1 mol% but not observed in normal grains, Specimens with normal grain shape showed intergranular fracture mode whereas the specimens with irregular grain shape showed transgranular fracture mode.
The usual ceramic process of mixing and milling in state of oxides $ZrO_2$ and $CeO_2$ was adopted in this study in a wet process to manufacture Ce-TZP. $CeO_2$-$ZrO_2$ ceramics containing 8~20 mol% $CeO_2$ were made by heat treatment at $1250\sim1500^{\circ}C$ for 5hr. The maximum dispersion point of every slurry manufactured with a mixture of $ZrO_2$ and $CeO_2$ was neat at pH10. A stable slurry with average particle size of 90 nm can be manufactured when it is dispersed with the use of ammonia water and polycarboxylic acid ammonium. The sintered Ce-TZP ceramics manufactured with the addition of $CeO_2$ in a concentration of less than 10 mol% progressed to the fracture of the specimen due to the existence of a monoclinic phase of more than 30% at room temperature. More than 99% of the tetragonal phase was created for the sintered body with the addition of $CeO_2$ beyond 18 mol%, but the degradation of the mechanical properties on the entire specimen was brought about due to the $CeO_2$ existing in a percentage above 3%. Consequently, the optimal Ce-TZP level combined in the oxide state was identified to be 16 mol% of $CeO_2$ contents.
The high-temperature strength of Ce-TZP was measured at 200, 650 and 100$0^{\circ}C$ by 4-point bending test. And its fracture behavior was observed by SEM. Below $650^{\circ}C$ of the temperature, where monoclinic fraction was almost zero, the decreasing rate of bending strength was relatively slow, but above this temperature, high temperature strength was largely decreased as a result of the decrease of stress-induced transformation of zirconia. The observation of fracture surface bended at 100$0^{\circ}C$ indicated that the fracture mode changed from intergranular-into transgranular-form with regardless of ceria contents.
By using commercial zirconia powder CeO2-ZrO2 ceramics containing 8~16mol% CeO2 was made by heat treatment at 1350~155$0^{\circ}C$ for 1~10hr. The minimum amount of CeO2 for obtaining complete tetragonal phase was 12mol%, and in the tetragonal phase region fracture toughness of Ce-TZP was decreased with increasing CeO2 content and the maximum value was obtained when 12mol% CeO2 was added. The bending strength goes through maximum at 14mol% CeO2. Fracture mode of Ce-TZP transformed from intergranular to transgranular fracture with increasing CeO2 content, so the morphology of fracture surface of 16mol% Ce-TZP was wholly transgranular and this tendency was independent on grain size. The crystal structure of the 12mol% Ce-TZP was monoclinic with fringes along the grain boundaries which are lying in the particular plane from the TEM observation. The chemical composition of the sintered body was homogeneous as a whole and some amorphism or air pocket was observed at the triple junction.
For theinvestigation of MgO addition effect on 12Ce-TZP ceramics, MgO-CeO2-ZrO2 ceramics was fabricated using commercial powders under sintering condition of 130$0^{\circ}C$-1$600^{\circ}C$ for 2hr. Fully tetragonal phase could be obtained by proper heat treatment and MgO addition amount. Minor cubic phase was appeared in relatively high MgO content composition at each sintering temperature. As alloying amount of MgO increased, tetragonal stability increased and grain size decreased. Grain size dependence on MgO content was verified by SEM observation of fractured surface. Surface bloating was observed from the 2 m/o to 6m/o in the temperature range of 150$0^{\circ}C$ to 1$600^{\circ}C$. In spite of very porous microstructure owing to surface bloating, 100% TZP could be maintained in 2.0m/o MgO composition by heat treatment of 150$0^{\circ}C$. This result indicated that MgO was more powerful stabilizer than CeO2. Mechanical proprties of MgO-CeO2-ZrO2 ceramics were consistent with the stability observation of tetragonal phase very well.
The effect of aliovalent dopants, $ Nb_2O_5$ and MnO, on the phase stability of 12 mol% ceria partially-stabilized zirconia (Ce-TZP) polycrystals was studied. Both dopants (MnO and $ Nb_2O_5$) significantly increased the stability of the tetragonal zirconia phase (Mb temperature lower than liquid nitrogen temperature). The enhancement of the stability of the tetragonal phase in Ce-TZP doped with 1 mol% of Mno(Ce-TZP/MnO) andCe-TZP doped with 1 mol% of $ Nb_2O_5$(Ce-TZP/$ Nb_2O_5$) were explained by the significant reduction of the driving force, -${\Delta}$Gchem, for the tetragonal-to-mono-clinic phase transformation caused by the addition of MnO and $ Nb_2O_5$. The enhanced stability of the tetragonal phase in the Ce-TZP and Al2O3 composite (Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$) is believed to be caused by smaller grain size, moderate reduction in the chemical driving force and increase in the strain energy barrier to the transformation. Mechanical properties of the Ce-TZP and the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ with (i) the same grain size and (ii) the same Mb temperature were examined by measuring stress-strain behavior in 3 point bending. The Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ composite doped with 1.3w% MnO (Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$/MnO), which had the same grain size as the Ce-TZP and De-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ showed more transformation plasticity than either the Ce-TZP or the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ composite. The Ce-TZP wihch had the same Mb temperature as that of the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$/MnO did not show any transformation plasticity.
The effect of aliovalent dopents, $Nb_3O_5$ and MnO, on the grain growth kinetics of 12 mol% ceria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Ce-TZP) was studied. All specimens were sintered at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes prior to annealing at different temperatures to study grain growth kinetics. Grain growth kinetics of Ce-TZP and 1 mol% $Nb_2O_5$ doped Ce-TZP (Ce-TZP/$Nb_3O_5$) during annealing at 1475, 1550, and $1600^{\circ}C$ adequately matched with square law $(D^2-D_\;o^2=k_at)$. However, grain growth in 1 mol% MnO suppressed grain growth in Ce-TZP by drag force exerted by $Mn^{+2}$ ions which segregated strongly to the positively-charged grain boundaries of Ce-TZP, $Nb_2O_5$ enhanced grain growth by increasing the concentration of vacancies of $Zr^{+4}$ ion and $Ce^{+4}$ ions. Surface analysis with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed the segregation of Mn+2 ions to grain boundaries. The kinetics of grain growth obtained in the base Ce-TZP and the Ce-TZPs with the aliovalent dopants were examined in the context of impurity drag effect and space charge effect.
Ceria(CeO2) stabilized zirconia(CeSZ) sol was synthesized with zirconium n-butoxide Zr(OC4H9)4 and cerium nitrate hexahydrate Ce(NO3)3.6H2O as precursors and ethylacetoacetate(EAcAc) as a chelating agent under atmosphere. CeSZ films were deposited on AISI 304 stainless steel using the prepared polymeric sol by dipcoating and the coating characteristics were investigated by XRD, ellipsometry, scratch test and SEM. The CeSZ film began to crystallize from amorphous to tetragonal phase at 40$0^{\circ}C$ and it was not converted into monoclinic phase up to 100$0^{\circ}C$ by the addition of 16mol% CeO2 as a stabilizer which could suppress phase transformation of zirconia. The CeSZ films were prepared by varying the EAcAc contents and the cncentration of CeSZ sol and measured the thickness and refractive index. From these results, it was found that the EAcAc contents and concentration of CeSZ coating sol evidently affect the densification of CeSZ film. The CeSZ film coated with 0.4M CeSZ sol and heat-treated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 10min had thickness of 50nm and 17% porosity. The CeSZ film on 304 stainless steel effectively acted as a protective layer against oxidation up to 80$0^{\circ}C$ and had superior corrosion resistance in 25% H2SO4 solution for 4.5 hrs.
Effect of Al2O3 addition on the mechanical properties and microstructure of Ce-TZP were studied. 12, 14, 16Ce-TZP containing 0-40wt% Al2O3 were prepared by sintering at 155$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h. in air. Density, linear shrinkage, bending strength, Vickers hardness, microstructuer and the amount of stress induced phase transformation were examined. Vickers hardness increased linearly with increasing amounts of Al2O3. The amount of transformation and fracture toughness decreased linearly with increasing amount of Al2O3. Linear shrinkage and relative density decreased with increasing Al2O3 content in all composition of Ce-TZP. Grain growth of Ce-TZP was inhibited by Al2O3 dispersion and fracture mode of Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composites transformed from intergranular to transgranular fracture as the amount of Al2O3 increased. TEM observation revealed that Al2O3 particles were located mainly at grain boundaries of ZrO2.
Yttia-doped ceria-stabilized ziconia polycrystals(Ce-TZP) was prepared by dipping method and its microstructure was investigated. By controlling doped-yttria content and annealing condition, yttria-doped Ce-TZP showed the microstructure with irregular grain shape and undulated grain boundary. Irregularity of grain shape increased with the amount of yttria doped, and severe undulated grain boundary was observed mainly at the surface region. In the case of yttria-doped Ce-TZP annealed at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 2h after two dipping times into yttrium nitrate solution of 0.2M, it showed irregular grain shape both at the surface and at the interior region as well as the most severe irregularity. Hot pressed specimen had mean grain size of 0.3$\mu\textrm{m}$ and undulated grain boundary. All specimens with irregular grain shape were retained the tetragonal phase. The fracture toughness of yttria-doped Ce-TZP with irregular grain shape was over the value of 17.6MPa.m(sup)1/2.
