  • To utilize hydrogen energy, high-yield, high-purity hydrogen needs to be produced; therefore, hydrogen separation membrane studies are being conducted. The membrane reactor that fabricates hydrogen needs to have high hydrogen permeability, selective permeability, heatresistant and a stable mechanical membrane. Dense membranes of Pd and Pd alloys are usually used, but these have drawbacks associated with high cost and durability. Therefore, many researchers have studied replacing Pd and Pd alloys. Dense TiN membrane is highly selective and can separate high-purity hydrogen. The porous alumina has a high permeation rate but low selectivity; therefore, separating high-purity hydrogen is difficult. To overcome this drawback, the two materials are combined as composite reclamations to produce a separation membrane with a high penetration rate and high selectivity. Accordingly, TiN-alumina was manufactured using a high-energy ball mill. The TiN-alumina membrane was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The hydrogen permeability of the TiN-alumina membrane was estimated by a Sievert-type hydrogen permeation membrane apparatus. Due to the change in the diffusion mechanism, the transmittance value was lower than that of the general TiN ceramic separator.

  • In this study, nanosized TPA-silicalite-1 was synthesized with a suitable molar composition of TPAOH: $SiO_2$: $H_2O$ for the development of zeolite ceramic membranes to utilize as gas separation. As silica sources, TEOS, LUDOX AS-40 and CAB-O-SIL were used with the starting material of TPAOH. $NaH_2PO_4$, and a variety of acids and bases were used as promoters after TPAOH, $SiO_2$, $H_2O$ gel synthesis. To decrease synthesis time, a two step temperature change method was applied to the synthesis of TPA-silicalite-1 at a low temperature. TPA-silicalite-1 synthesized was analyzed with XRD, SEM, BET and TGA. As a result, TPA-silicalite-1 powders with a particle size of 100 nm and a specific surface area of $416m^2/g$ were obtained as optimum synthesis conditions when the two stage temperature change method was used with $NaH_2PO_4$ as promoter.

  • Presence of ammonia in drinking water is very toxic to human health. Soluble ammonia contaminates ground water due to activities such as the use of fertilizer in crop, industrial effluents and burning of fossil fuel. Even low concentration of ammonia present in water will damage aqua environment such as marine organism. Membrane technology is an important process to remove ammonia from effectively from water. Flat sheet membrane, membrane contactor and membrane distillation are some of the methods used for water purification from ammonia. Membrane contractor is an efficient process in which ammonia is removed through liquid-gas or liquid-liquid mass transfer without change of phase unlike membrane distillation. However, the cost of ammonia removal in this method is high due to maintenance of very high pH. Zeolite has excellent ion exchange ability that enhances its ability to interact with ammonia and adsorb from wastewater. Mixed matrix membranes containing zeolite enhance the efficiency of ammonia adsorption and separation from wastewater. In this review the above discussed issues are summarized in detail.

  • Dense ceramic membranes have been prepared using the commercial perovsikite $Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}O_{3-{\delta}}$, powders synthesized by the solid state reaction method. The as-synthesized powders were compressed into disks with 1.0 mm of thickness and the disk was sintered at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr. The oxygen permeation flux of $Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}O_{3-{\delta}}$ membrane increased with the increasing temperature and oxygen partial pressure. The activation energy for oxygen permeation was increased with the increasing oxygen partial pressure. Oxygen permeation flux at $950^{\circ}C$ were measured at various flow rates of feed and sweep gas. It has been demonstrated that oxygen permeability increased at elevated flow rates of both gases, but the sweep gas is more influential.

  • In this study, Material life cycle evaluation was performed to analyze the environmental impact characteristics of TiN-Zr membrane manufacturing process. The software of MLCA was Gabi. Through this, environmental impact assessment was performed for each process. Transition metal nitrides have been researched extensively because of their properties. Among these, TiN has the most attention. TiN is a ceramic materials which possess the good combination of physical and chemical properties, such as high melting point, high hardness, and relatively low specific gravity, high wear resistance and high corrosion resistance. With these properties, TiN plays an important role in functional materials for application in separation hydrogen from fossil fuel. Precursor TiN was synthesized by sol-gel method and zirconium was coated by ball mill method. The metallurgical, physical and thermodynamic characteristics of the membranes were analyzed by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermo Gravimetry/Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA), Brunauer, Emmett, Teller (BET) and Gas Chromatograph System (GP). As a result of characterization and normalization, environmental impacts were 94% in MAETP (Marine Aquatic Ecotoxicity), 2% FAETP (Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxicity), 2% HTP (Human Toxicity Potential). TiN fabrication process appears to have a direct or indirect impact on the human body. It is believed that the greatest impact that HTP can have on human is the carcinogenic properties. This shows that electricity use has a great influence on ecosystem impact. TiN-Zr was analyzed in Eco-Indicator '99 (EI99) and CML 2001 methodology.

  • In this experiment, an α-Al2O3 ceramic hollow fiber was used as a support, and a hydrogen membrane plated with Pd and Pd-Ag was manufactured through electroless plating. The Pd-Ag membrane was annealed at 500℃ for 10 h to form an alloy of Pd and Ag. It was confirmed that it became a Pd-Ag alloy through EDS (Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) analysis. Also, the thickness of the Pd, Pd-Ag plating layer was measured to be about 8.98 and 9.29 ㎛ through SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) analysis respectively. Hydrogen permeation experiment was performed using the H2 gas and mixed gas (H2 and N2) in the range of 350~450℃ and 1-4 bar using the prepared hydrogen membrane. Under the H2 gas condition, the Pd and Pd-Ag membrane has a flux of up to 21.85 and 13.76 mL/cm2·min and also separation factors of 1216 and 361 were obtained in the mixed gas at 450℃ and 4 bar conditions respectively.
