$C_f/SiC$ composites were prepared via a process combining chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) and precursor infiltration pyrolysis (PIP), wherein silicon carbide matrices were infiltrated into 2.5D carbon preforms. The obtained composites exhibited porosities of 20 vol % and achieved strengths of 244 MPa in air at room temperature and 423 MPa at $1300^{\circ}C$ under an Ar atmosphere. Carbon fiber pull-out was rarely observed in the fractured surfaces, although intermediate layers of pyrolytic carbon of 150 nm thickness were deposited between the fiber and matrix. Fatigue fracture was observed after 1380 cycles under 45 MPa stress at $1000^{\circ}C$. The fractured samples were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy to observe the distributed phases.
Electrical discharge machining (EDM) was attempted on a ceramic matrix composite containing non-conductive alumina as a matrix and conductive titania as a second phase, and was found successful. As the current or duty factor increased, the material removal rate (MRR) increased and the surface roughness also increased. The EDMed surface was covered with a number of craters of a circular shape having 100-200 microns of diameter. The melting and evaporation was suggested for the EDM mechanism. The bending strength decreased 44% after EDM, but the Weibull modulus increased more than twice. Combination of EDM and barre이 polishing resulted in the maintenance of the bending strength level. Temperature distribution near a spark in the sample was computer-simulated by use of finite element method, and was found to have similar shape to the one which the observed craters have.
Sintering and microstructure of Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composite with $\alpha$-Al2O3 matrix containing dispersed 5~50 vol% ZrO2 were discussed. Sintered density was increased with elevating forming pressure in range of 6~300 MPa and about >99.2% of theoretical density was obtained at 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 2h in case of 300 MPa of 6~300 MPa uniaxially cold-pressed compacts containing 20 vol% ZrO2. All kinds of different batch composition exhibited nearly the same shrinkage behaviour with end-point shrinkage between 20 and 24%, and had the maximum shrinkage rate (0.41~0.54%/min) around 140$0^{\circ}C$. Grain growth was occurred faster in $\alpha$-Al2O3 than in {{{{ gamma }}-Al2O3 starting matrix during sintering at 1$600^{\circ}C$. Bimodal pore size distribution of interaglomerate pores with size of 0.03~0.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and of interaglomerate pores with size of around 60 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was obtained in Ce-TZP/$\alpha$-Al2O3 composite sintered at 130$0^{\circ}C$. But unimodal pore size distribution with around 0.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was observed in Ce-TZP/{{{{ gamma }}-Al2O3 composite sintered at the same temperature. Microcracks were occurred due to the tlongrightarrowm transformation of ZrO2 on cooling process.
In this article, the present activities regarding research and development of continuous SiC fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites (CFCC) in Japan are reviewed. The key technologies in SiC fiber composites are interphase between fiber and matrix and its oxidation resistance. To improve oxidation resistance of interphase, various kinds of technologies such as environment barrier coating, high dense matrix, unti-oxidation matrix, multi-layered intephase have been developed. It is suggested that high performance, affordable processing cost, and excellent reliability will be important factors to be in practical use of CMCs in future.
Continuous SiC fiber-reinforced SiC-matrix composites ($SiC_f$/SiC) had been fabricated by electrophoretic infiltration combined with ultrasonication. Nano-sized ${\beta}$-SiC added with 12 wt% of $Al_2O_3-Y_2O_3$ additive and Tyranno$^{TM}$-SA3 fabric were used as a matrix phase and fiber reinforcement, respectively. After hot pressing at 5 different conditions, the density, microstructure and mechanical properties of $SiC_f$/SiC were characterized. Hot pressing at relatively severe conditions, such as $1750^{\circ}C$ for 1 and 2 h, resulted in a brittle fracture behavior due to the strong fiber-matrix interface in spite of their high flexural strength. On the other hand, toughened $SiC_f$/SiC composite could be achieved by hot pressing at milder condition because of the formation of weak interface in spite of the decreased flexural strength. These results proposed the importance of weak fiber-matrix interface in the fabrication of ductile $SiC_f$/SiC composite.
Carbon nanotube-dispersed bismuth telluride matrix (CNT/$Bi_2Te_3$) nanopowders were synthesized by chemical routes followed by a ball-milling process. The microstructures of the synthesized CNT/$Bi_2Te_3$ nanopowders showed the characteristic microstructure of CNTs dispersed among disc-shaped $Bi_2Te_3$ nanopowders with as an average size of 500 nm in-plane and a few tens of nm in thickness. The prepared nanopowders were sintered into composites with a homogeneous dispersion of CNTs in a $Bi_2Te_3$ matrix. The dimensionless figure-of-merit of the composite showed an enhanced value compared to that of pure $Bi_2Te_3$ at the room temperature due to the reduced thermal conductivity and increased electrical conductivity with the addition of CNTs.
Mullite-zirconia (0∼4 mol% yttria) composites were obtained by In-situ sintering of zircon and alumina mixture, and their mechanical properties were studied in conjuction with microstructure observation. Martensitic transformation temperature (Ms) of zirconia dispersed in the mullite matrix decreased with Y2O3 contents and was about 600$^{\circ}C$ for ZrO2 containing 4 mol% Y2O3. On cooling of this composites, tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation induced microcracks at the grain boundary of mullite matrix. The microcracks seemed to absorb the fracture energy in stress field during mechanical tests. Therefore, toughening mechanisms of this composite were considered to nucleation and extension of microcrack, and crack deflection mechanism due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between matrix and dispersed phase.
Abalone shell is a high strength and light weighted ceramic composite material, which is composed of $CaCO_3$ platelet and protein. Microstructure of abalone shell has a matrix structure that is similar to the bricks and mortar. The technology inspired from nature which consumes low energy at low temperature is called bioinspired technology. In this study, to make high strength and light weighted ceramic composite materials using bioinspired technology, porous green body was prepared with $Al_2O_3$ platelet. PMMA was infiltrated into the porous green body, then warm pressed to eliminate pores present in the composite. The microstructure of the composite was observed with FESEM, and the mechanical/thermal properties were measured.
BCB $Resin-BaNd_2Ti_4O_{12}$(BNT) composites with BNT contents were prepared by tape casting method and epoxy resin-BNT composites were prepared by using heating press. Their dielectric properties and microstructures were investigated. The dielectric properties such as dielectric constant and dielectric loss at 1 MHz for epoxy resin-BNT composites and BCB resin-BNT composites are improved with an increase of BNT volume fraction. The dielectric constant of the Epoxy-BNT composite increased from 5.9 to 7.8 as the volume fraction of BNT increased from 15 to 25. The dielectric constant of the BCB-BNT composite increased from 9.1 to 15.5 as the volume fraction of BNT increased from 30 to 50. The dielectric behavior of BCB-BNT system can be explained by Lichtenecker's equation. The dielectric constant of epoxy resin-BNT composite is smaller than that of BCB resin-BNT composite. These results are considered to be related with the dispersion of BNT filler in polymer matrix from the result of SEM photograph.
