  • The ceramic has various high mechanical properties such as heat, abrasion, corrosion resistance and high temperature strength compared with metal. It also has low speciffic weight, low thermal expansibillity, low thermal conductivity. However, it could not be used as structural material since it is brittle and difficult for the machining. Therefore, there have been many researches to attempt to join ceramic with metal which is full of ductillity in order to compensate the weakness of ceramic. The problem is that residual stress develops around the joint area while the ceramic/metal joint material is cooled from high joining temperature to room temperature due to remarkable difference of thermal expansion coefficients between ceramic and metal. Especially, the residual stress at both edges of the specimen reduces the strngth of joint to a large amount by forming a singular stress field. In this study, two dimensional finite element method is attempted for the thermal elastic analysis. The joint residual stress of ceramic/metal developed in the cooling process is investigated and the change of joint residual stress resulted from the repetitive heat cycle is also examined. In addition, it is attempted to clarify the joint stress distribution of the case of tensile load and of the case of superposition of residual stress and actual loading stress.

  • Sessile drop studies of molten Al on single crystal sapphire substrate were conducted to understand the wetting behavior and interfacial reaction at Al/Al2O3 interface. To investigate the wetting mechanism, the variation in contact angle was determined with time. The contact angle obtained in this study decreased exponentially with time. This result means that the driving force for wetting is the reduction in interfacial energy between liquid Al and sapphire caused by the interfacial reaction. The closer examination revealed that the reaction was the dissolution of sapphire by molten Al. Ti has been frequently used to improve wetting on ceramic materials. Therefore, the influence of Ti content on the wetting behaviour was investigated in this work. The equilibrium wetting angles of pure Al, Al-0.3 wt%Ti, and Al-1.0 wt%Ti at 100$0^{\circ}C$ were 63$^{\circ}$, 59$^{\circ}$, and 54$^{\circ}$respectively. The difference is considered as the result of the change in interfacial energy caused by the reaction between Ti and sapphire and the interfacial reaction formed the reaction products of varying stoichiometry (TiO, Ti2O3, TiO2 etc.).

  • An investigation of the crack propagation behavior of Al2O3-33Vol.% SiCw at 140$0^{\circ}C$ was conducted with various loading frequencies. Higher crack propagation was observed in lower frequency and higher load ratios. Interface sliding fracture due to glassy phase from the oxidation of SiCw and cavitation along grain boundary of diffusional creep appeared to be the main mechanism of fatigue fracture in slower crack propagation while interface sliding and whisker pull out aided by glassy phase formation played main role of fatigue fracture for higher crack growth condition. The frequency effect on deformation behavior was discussed with a Maxwell model.

  • Chemical reaction occurred in the interface of Mn-Zn ferrite and glass after bonding. Effects of the formation of reaction layer on the magnetic properties were investigated. The composition of glass was 23PbO-61SiO2-6ZnO-8Na2O-2K2O and the ferrite was chosen to have a high permeability. Toroid samples of ferrites bonded with glasses, were heat-treated at $700^{\circ}C$, 80$0^{\circ}C$ and 90$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The reaction was observed to increase with bonding temperature, resulting in the development of reaction layer. Subsequently the initial permeability was found to be decreased. The permeabilities decreased by 25% with increasing bonding temperature from $700^{\circ}C$ to 80$0^{\circ}C$. At the bonding temperature of 90$0^{\circ}C$, the permeability was decreased by 45%, compared to that of 80$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Residual stresses is one of the major factors to degrade the magnetic properties of VCR magnetic heads. Vicker's indentation technique was adapted to estimate the residual stresses Residual stresses and distribution in the glass and ferrite were obtained after bonding ferrite with glass, varing the cooling rate. The compressive and tensile stresses were developed in the interface and gradually decreased with increasing distance from the interface. The stresses were decreased with a cooling rate. The mean values of residual stress in ferrite were 10MN/㎡, 8MN/㎡, 5MN/㎡ with cooling rate 10℃/min, 5℃/min, 1℃/min respectively. When the bonded sample was annealed above the glass transition temperature followed by cooling at 5℃/min cooling rate, the residual stress was reduced to 6MN/㎡.

  • To analyze the mechanical property and the residual stress in functionally gradient materials(FGMs), disctype TZP/Ni-and TZP/SUS304-FGM were hot pressed using powder metallurgy compared with directly bonded materials which were fabricated by the same method. The continuous interface and the microstructure of FGMs were characterized by EPMA, WDS, optical microscope and SEM. By fractography, the fracture behavior of FGMs was mainly influenced by the defects which originated from the fabrication process. And the defectlike cracks in the FGMs induced by the residual stress have been shown to cause failure. This fact has well corresponded to the analysis of the residual stress distribution by Finite Element Method (FEM). The residual stress generated on the interface (between each layer, and matrix and second phase, respectively) were dominantly influenced on the sintering temperature and the material constants. As a consequence, the interfacial stability and the relaxation of residual stress could be obtained through compositional gradient.

  • A study is made of mechanical properties of unglazed matrix as a funtion of sintering temperature and crack patterns in layer structur pottery consisting of glaze and substrate and in matrix which is sintered at 120$0^{\circ}C$ and 130$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. The mechanical properties of matrix are increased due to density and vitrification to 130$0^{\circ}C$ The interface of glazed bilayer reveals the reactive intermediate layer. Herzian indentation testing is used to investigate the evolution of damage modes as a function of load. In the materials sintered at 120$0^{\circ}C$ quasi-plastic deformation is developed at the matrix and the cone-like cracks initiate at the glazing top surface and additionally upward-extending transverse cracks initiate at the internal in-just initiate at the glazing top surface which pass through the interface with increasing of indentation load. Finally the dominant damage mode shifts from substrate quasi-plasticity to coating fracture with increasing sintering temperature.

  • Hertzian contact tests were used to investigate the evolution of fracturedamage in the coating layer as functions of contact load and coating thickness by studying crack patterns in porcelain on glass-infiltrated alumina bilayer system conceived to simulate the crown structure of a tooth. Cone cracks initiated at the coating top surface without delamination at interface and crack propagation to substrate. Preferentially the cracks made multi-cracks at the coating top surface rather than proceeding to interface. The cracks were highly stabilized with wide ranges between the loads to initiate first cracking and to cause final failure im-plying damage-tolerant capability. Finite element modelling was used to evaluate the stress distribution. Maximum tensile stress were responsible for the cracking at the coating layer and had a profound influence on the crack pattern and fracture damage in the layered structure materials.

  • Ammonia gas was blown into the solution of zirconium ion to induce precipitation of supersaturated zirconium ion at gas-liquid interface with increase in pH. The influence of pH on the phase and particle size of precipitate and calcined powders has been investigated. At pH 4.5 of zirconium solution, maximum yield of 98.7% was obtained. Above pH 4.5, there was no more increase of yield. Above pH 5.5, large aggregates consisting of primary particles were observed in precipitate and calcined powders. At pH 4.5, almost aggregate-free fine spherical zirconia powders were obtained.

  • To produce a fine structure with uniform surface of barrier ribs in PDP, acid etching process has been used in manufacture process. It is necessary to understand the mechanism of etching, particularly on the interface of ceramic fillers and matrix glass. We investigated the effect of ceramic fillers (ZnO, $Al_2O_3$) on the microstructure of borate glass system to find an etching mechanism of barrier ribs. The barrier ribs was etched with several steps, dissolving a small amount of residual glass, taking out alumina fillers, and removing a cluster type of ZnO fillers and glass matrix.
