In this paper, we study the response of several anisotropic systems to buried transient line loads. The problem is mathematically formulated based on the equations of motion in the constitutive relations. The load is in form of a normal stress acting with arbitrary axis on the plane of monoclinic symmetry. Plane wave equation is coupled with vertical shear wave, longitudinal wave and horizontal shear wave. We first considered the equation of motion in reference coordinate system, where the line load is coincident with symmetry axis of the orthotrioic material. Then the equation of motion is transformed with respect to general coordiante system with azimuthal angle by using transformation tensor. The load is first described as a body force in the equations of the motion for the infinite media and then it is mathematically characterized. Subsequently the results for semi-infinite spaces is also obtained by using superposition of the infinite medium solution together with a scattered solution from the free surface. Consequently explicit solutions for the displacements are obtained by using Cargniard-DeHoop contour. Numerical results which are drawn from concrete examples of orthotropic material belonging to monoclinic symmetry are demonstrated.

A new design methodology is presented for the multi-degree-of-freedom vibration absorber for an elastically suspended rigid body with planes of symmetry in general motion. Unlike the common single degree-of-freedom vibration absorber, the presented methodology makes use of both linear and rotational properties of the absorber. It is suggested that an absorber is designed separately for the in-plane and out-of-plane vibration modes and thereby combined the two cases for a six-degree-of-freedom absorber. The nine possible design methods are suggested for the six-degree-of-freedom absorber when an elastically suspended rigid body has one, two, or three planes of symmetry.

In this paper, a novel vehicle detection algorithm is proposed that utilizes the color histogram of the image. The color histogram is used to search the image for regions with shadow, block symmetry, and block non-homogeneity, thereby detecting the vehicle region. First, an integral histogram of the input image is computed to decrease the amount of required computation time for the block color histograms. Then, shadow detection is performed and the block symmetry and block non-homogeneity are checked in a cascade manner to detect the vehicle in the image. Finally, the proposed scheme is applied to both still images taken in a parking lot and an on-road video sequence to demonstrate its effectiveness.

PURPOSE: This study intended to verify whether there was actual correlation between weight-bearing asymmetry and a limitation in hip joint rotation range in patients with low back pain. METHODS: Thirty five low back pain patients voluntarily participated this study. For each participant, hip joint medial rotation symmetry rate and the weight-bearing symmetry rate were calculated. The correlation between the two variables was investigated. RESULTS: A decrease in the left hip joint medial rotation range of motion (ROM) was observed more often than a reduction in the right hip joint medial rotation ROM. However, similar number between right and left side was observed in ground reaction force more weighted. The coefficient between the passive hip joint medial rotation symmetry rate and the weight loading symmetry ratio was -0.19 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated a weak correlation between the hip joint medial rotation ROM and the weight distribution of both feet. Such result suggests that careful evaluation by separating each element is needed in treating patients with low back pain. Future research should take into account asymmetric alignment and abnormal movement in different joints of the body as well as asymmetry in the bilateral hip joint rotation and the unilateral weight supporting posture.
Purpose: The emphasis on gait rehabilitation after stroke depends on training support through the lower limbs, balance of body mass over the changing base of support. However, muscle weakness, lack of control of lower limb, and poor balance can interfere with training after stroke. For this case study report, a wearable robot orthosis was applied to stroke patients in order to verify its actual applicability on balance and gait ability in the clinical field. Methods: Two stroke patients participated in the training using the wearable robot orthosis. Wearable robot orthosis provides patient-initiated active assistance contraction during training. Training includes weight shift training, standing up and sitting down, ground walking, and stair up and down Training was applied a total of 20 times, five times a week for 4 weeks, for 30 minutes a day. Gait ability was determined by Stance phase symmetry profile, Swing phase symmetry profile, and velocity using the GAITRite system. Balance ability was measured using the Biodex balance system. Results: Subjects 1, 2 showed improved gait and balance ability with mean individual improvement of 72.4% for velocity, 19.4% for stance phase symmetry profile, 9.6% for swing phase symmetry profile, and 13.6% for balance ability. Conclusion: Training utilizing a wearable robot orthosis can be useful for improvement of the gait and balance ability of stroke patients.
The surface structure of polycrystalline Fe films of various thicknesses on glass substrates have been studied using a Ti: Sapphire laser at 780 nm. We found that the surface structure possesses C$_s$ crystal structure close to $C_{2v}$ through symmetry consideration. We present one-fold intensity profile with one mirror plane in second harmonic (SH) intensity as a proof of $C_s$ symmetry. $C_s$ and $C_{2v}$ surface symmetries usually appear at the (110) surface of a cubic diamond single crystal [1]. Therefore this surface symmetry would be related to bcc (110) growth orientation coinciding with XRD measurement. Further we treated surface normalized SH asymmetry with various thicknesses. The SH asymmetry increases with increasing of film thickness. From these results, it is observed that the surface structure of thin polycrystalline Fe film below 5 nm is almost isotropic, while in the case of the thicker Fe films, surface structure have $C_s$ symmetry structure close to $C_{2v}$.
The photodissociation dynamics of 1,2-bromochloroethane ($C_2H_4BrCl$) was investigated near 234 nm. A two-dimensional photofragment ion-imaging technique coupled with a [2+1] resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization scheme was utilized to obtain speed and angular distributions of the nascent Br($^2P_{3/2}$) and Br${\ast}($^2P_{1/2}$) atoms. The total translational energy distributions for the Br and Br${\ast}$ channels were well characterized by Gaussian functions with average translational energies of 100 and 84 kJ/mol, respectively. The recoil anisotropies for the Br and Br${\ast}$ channels were measured to be ${\beta}$ = 0.49 ${\pm}$ 0.05 for Br and 1.55 ${\pm}$ 0.05 for Br${\ast}$. The relative quantum yield for Br${\ast}$ was found to be ${\Phi}_{Br{\ast}}$ = 0.33 ${\pm}$ 0.03. The probability of nonadiabatic transition between A' states was estimated to be 0.46. The relevant nonadiabatic dynamics is discussed in terms of interaction between potential energy surfaces in Cs symmetry.

Background The masseter nerve is a useful donor nerve for reconstruction in patients with established facial palsy, with numerous advantages including low morbidity, a strong motor impulse, high reliability, and fast reinnervation. In this study, we assessed the results of masseter nerve-innervated free gracilis muscle transfer in established facial palsy patients. Methods Ten patients with facial palsy who received treatment from January 2015 to January 2017 were enrolled in this study. Three patients received masseter nerve-only free gracilis transfer, and seven received double-innervated free gracilis transfer (masseter nerve and a cross-face nerve graft). Patients were evaluated using the Facial Assessment by Computer Evaluation software (FACEgram) to quantify oral commissure excursion and symmetry at rest and when smiling after muscle transfer. Results The mean time between surgery and initial movement was roughly 167.7 days. A statistically significant increase in excursion at rest and when smiling was seen after muscle transfer. There was a significant increase in the distance of oral commissure excursion at rest and when smiling. A statistically significant increase was observed in symmetry when smiling. Terzis' functional and aesthetic grading scores showed significant improvements postoperatively. Conclusions Masseter nerve innervation is a good option with many uses in in established facial palsy patients. For some conditions, it is the first-line treatment. Free gracilis muscle transfer using the masseter nerve has excellent results with good symmetry and an effective degree of recovery.
Computer simulation of sensing current effects on the magnetic and magnetoresistance properties of a crossed spin-valve head is carried out. The spin-valve head has the following layer structure: Ta (8.0 nm)/NiMn (25 nm)/NiFe (2.5 nm)/Cu (3.0 nm)/NiFe (5.5 nm)/Ta (3.0 nm), and it is 1500 nm long and 600 nm wide. Even with a high pinning field of 300 Oe and a high hard-biased field of 50 Oe, the ideal crossed spin-valve structure, which is essential to the symmetry of the output signal and hence high density recording, is not realized mainly due to large interlayer magnetostatic interactions. This problem is solved by applying a suitable magnitude of sensing currents along the length direction generating magnetic fields in the width direction. The ideal spin-valve head is expected to show good symmetry of the output signal. This has not been shown explicitly in the present simulation, however, The reason for this is possibly related to the simple assumption used in this calculation that each magnetic layer consists of a single domain.
