  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of specific hydration reaction on the stiffening process of cement paste. The cement compositions are manipulated to cause specific hydration reactions (secondary gypsum and syngenite formation) responsible for false set, and the relationship between specific hydration reactions and the flow and stiffening behavior of cement paste were investigated using modified ASTM C 403 penetration resistance measurement and oscillatory shear rheology. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was used for the phase identification associated with premature stiffening of cement paste. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used for verification of syngenite formation. From the results, both secondary gypsum and syngenite formation caused faster stiffening and set. The amount of syngenite produced during 1 hour hydration was approximately 1 % of total mass of the cement paste, but cement paste with syngenite formation showed significantly accelerated stiffening behavior compared to normal cement paste.

  • In this paper, we investigated the performance of synthetic graphene oxide-functionalized carbon nanotubes (GF) to promote cement hydration and increase the mechanical properties of cement paste. The enhancement effect of GF on the various properties of cement paste was evaluated via the mechanical strength, X-ray diffraction, and heat of hydration of cement paste. The results clearly showed that GF incorporation into cement paste promotes the early hydration of cement paste, generates more hydration products, which results in the mechanical improvement of cement paste. The compressive and splitting tensile strength were increased by 32.17% and 17.31%, respectively, compared to ordinary Portland cement at 28 days of hydration.

  • This study aimed to develop models of sulfate diffusion and ettringite content profile in cement paste for the predication of the damage behavior in cement paste subject to external sulfate. In the models, multiphase reaction equilibrium between ions in pore solution and solid calcium aluminates phases and the microstructure changes in different positions of cement paste were taken into account. The distributions of expansive volume strain and expansion stress in cement paste were calculated based on the ettringite content profile model. In addition, more sulfate diffusion tests and SEM analyses were determined to verify the reliability and veracity of the models. As the results shown, there was a good correlation between the numerical simulation results and experimental evidences. The results indicated that the water to cement ratio (w/c) had a significant influence on the diffusion of sulfate ions, ettringite concentration profile and expansion properties in cement paste specimens. The cracking points caused by ettringite growth in cement paste specimens were predicted through numerical methods. According to the simulation results, the fracture of cement paste would be accelerated when the specimens were prepared with higher w/c or when they were exposed to sulfate solution with higher concentration.

  • Four kids of powder admixtures(A, B, C, D) based on anhydrite were manufactured by mixing at a fixed rate of II-anhydrite, fly ash and active silica as an industrial by-product. Fluidity properties of cement paste such as mini-slump, apparent viscosity with elapsed time, as well as setting time of cement pastes of these admixtures substituted up to 11wt% of cement were compared to those of cement paste(SS) substisuted by marketed high-strength powder admixture(S). Among these powder admixtures, the fluidity of cement pastes(PA, PC) substituted by A and C powder admixtures manufactured from II-anhydrite and fly ash had an excellent property than that of cement paste substituted by marketed powder admixture and also a good fluidity-retention effect with elapsed time by adding of superplasticizer. The setting time of cement paste substituted by powder admixtures based on anhydrite slightly retarded than that of cement paste substituted by marketed powder admixture.

  • Investigation for the preparation of high strength hardened cement paste using ordinary portland cement, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose(HPMC) with SiC powder was carried out. The cement paste was mixed with 0.1 of water cement ratio by twin roll mill and cured 60 days in humidity chamber. The hydration degree of cement paste cured with W/C=0.1 in 60 days was about 30% and most pores in the paste were found to be existed as gel pores of diameter less than 0.01㎛. The maximum flexural strength of hardened cement paste was about 960kg/㎠. When the SiC powder was added to the paste, the flexural strength was 1000∼1100kg/㎠ and the Young's modulus was 8∼9×105kg/㎠.

  • Investigation for the preparation of high strength hardened cement paste using ordinary portland cement, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) with admixtures was carried out. For molding of the specimen, the paste was mixed with 0.1 of water cement ratio by twin roll mill. The maximum flexural strength of dried hardened cement paste was about 600∼700kg/㎠. When the SiC was added to the paste, the dry flexural strength was about 920kg/㎠ and the young's modulus was 5.2×105kg/㎠. When the admixtures were added to the specimens, wet strength of the harened cement paste immersed in water was showed around 50∼100kg/㎠ higher than that of plain specimen. Consequently it is recognized the water stability of hardened cement paste was remarkably improved by adequate admixture.

  • This study was proceeded to analyze thixotropy of cement paste according to the addition timing of PVA and borax as a basic study of thixotropy of concrete. According to experiment results, the case added borax first and PVA later is that cement paste shows low thixotorpy, and the case added PVA first and borax later is that cement paste shows thixotropy but in certain mix condition fluidity of decrease due to a chemical bond between PVA and borax. The case add PVA and borax simultaneously is that cement paste was expressed thixotropy in all mix condition. Therefore the case add PVA and borax simultaneously is suitable for expressing thixotropy of cement paste.

  • Rheological properties of cement paste containing ultrafine blastfurnace slag (UBS, $9600cm^2/g$) were investigated by mini-slump test, pH meter, conduction calorimeter and coaxial cylinder viscometer. In order to improve rheological properties of the cement paste, granulated blastfurnace slag (GBS, $3500cm^2/g$) and polycarboxylate type superplasticizer (PC) were also used in this experiment. The fluidity of cement paste containing UBS was decreased. The yield stress and plastic viscosity of cement paste was increased with increasing UBS. But the rheological properties were improved when GBS and PC were added to UBS blended cement paste. In the relationship between the yield stress and the plastic viscosity or the mini-slump value, the yield stress of the cement paste was proportional to the plastic viscosity of it. However the cement paste mini-slump value was in inverse proportional to the yield stress.

  • The effects of replacement level, curing method and chemical admixtures were investigated in the cement-fly ash paste. The strength of cement-fly ash paste is lower than that of controlled cement paste only and the differences increase with replacement level. However, in steam curing, strength of cement-fly ash pastes is improved, especially, at early ages. In order to improve early strength, the use of $Na_2SO_4$in cement-fly ash paste increases the quality of concrete. In addition, improvement of strength of concrete including 30% of fly ash can be obtained and achieves the highest strength compared to other concrete mixtures.

  • In order to improve the strength degradation of the cement-based material to which strong alkaline liquid red mud was added, the liquid red mud was neutralized with sulfuric acid and added to the cement paste to examine the mechanical properties according to the amount added. As a result of measuring the compressive strength, the strength was higher when the red mud was neutralized with sulfuric acid and added to the cement paste than the cement paste to which the liquid red mud was added. As a result of hydration heat measurement, when red mud was neutralized with sulfuric acid and added to the cement paste, an initial strength higher than that of liquid red mud was expressed.
