Particle-in-cell simulations were performed to understand the interaction of the solar wind with localized magnetic fields on the sunlit surface of the Moon. The results indicated a mini-magnetosphere was formed which had a thin magnetopause with the thickness of the electron skin depth. It was also found that the solar wind penetrated into the cavity of the magnetosphere intermittently rather than in a steady manner. The solar wind that moved around the magnetosphere was observed to hit the surface of the Moon, implying that it may be the cause of the lunar swirl formation on the surface.
In this study, the yeast Pichia pastoris was genetically modified to assemble minicellulosomes on its cell surface by the heterologous expression of a truncated scaffoldin CipA from Clostridium acetobutylicum. Fluorescence microscopy and western blot analysis confirmed that CipA was targeted to the yeast cell surface and that NtEGD, the Nasutitermes takasagoensis endoglucanase that was fused with dockerin, interacted with CipA on the yeast cell surface, suggesting that the cohesin and dockerin domains and cellulose-binding module of C. acetobutylicum were functional in the yeasts. The enzymatic activities of the cellulases in the minicellulosomes that were displayed on the yeast cell surfaces increased dramatically following interaction with the cohesin-dockerin domains. Additionally, the hydrolysis efficiencies of NtEGD for carboxymethyl cellulose, microcrystal cellulose, and filter paper increased up to 1.4-fold, 2.0-fold, and 3.2-fold, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing the expression of C. acetobutylicum minicellulosomes in yeast and the incorporation of animal cellulases into cellulosomes. This strategy of heterologous cellulase incorporation lends novel insight into the process of cellulosome assembly. Potentially, the surface display of cellulosomes, such as that reported in this study, may be utilized in the engineering of S. cerevisiae for ethanol production from cellulose and additional future applications.

In this study, we investigated interaction of Schwann cells (SCs) with various cell-adhesive coated polymer surface. We used cell-adhesives that like a fibronectin (FN), fibrinogen(FG), laminin(LM), vitronectin (VN), poly-D-Iysine (PDL), and poly-L-Iysine (PLL) to coat PLGA film surface and evaluated the surface property of coated or not PLGA films by measurement of water contact angle and ESCA. SCs were cultured on coated or non-coated PLGA film surface, and then examined the cell adhesion and proliferation by cell count and SEM observation. Cell count results revealed initial cell adhesion related to protein adsorption on PLGA surface. In addition, serum content in media related to cell proliferation rate. In this result, we recognized that adhesion and proliferation of SCs were affected by specific cell-adhesives. In these results, we recognized that is important to provide the suitable surface environment according to cell types and culture condition for improvement of cell adhesion and proliferation.

A study has been made of the interaction parameters of Zn other elements in dilute solutesd solution of molten cadmium alloys over the temperature range of 450 to 570$^{\circ}C$. The experi-mental measurementss were made in a touch instant cell using a fusedd Licl-KCl electrolyte. The activity of zinc in binary and ternary solutions sexhibiteds a strong positive deviation from Raoult's law. The addition of silver, indium or lead increased the activity of zinc whereas addition of copper, bismuth or tin decreased the zinc activity slightly. The results for all the metallic solutions showed a linear dependence of reciprocal of ab-solute temperature over the experimental range. The interaction parameters obtained are as follows.

In this study, the behavior of cells on the modified surface, and the correlation between the modified substrates and the response of cells is described. A close-packed layer of nano-sized silica beads was prepared on a coverslip, and the adhesion, proliferation, and migration of BALB/3T3 fibroblast cells on the silica layer was monitered. The 550 nm silica beads were synthesized by the hydrolysis and condensation reaction of tetraethylorthosilicate in basic solution. The amine groups were introduced onto the surfaces of silica particles by treatment with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane. The close-packed layer of silica beads on the coverslip was obtained by the reaction of the amine-functionalized silica beads and the (3-triethoxysilyl)propylsuccinic anhydride treated coverslip. BALB/3T3 fibroblast cells were loaded on bare glass, APTMS coated glass, and silica bead coated glass with the same initial cell density, and the migration and proliferation of cells on the substrates was investigated. The cells were fixed and stained with antibodies in order to analyze the changes in the actin filaments and nuclei after culture on the different surfaces. The motility of cells on the silica bead coated glass was greater than that of the cells cultured on the control substrate. The growth rate of cells on the silica bead coated glass was slower than that of the control. Because the close-packed layer of silica beads gave an embossed surface, the adhesion of cells was very weak compared to the smooth surfaces. These results indicate that the adhesion of cells on the substrates is very important, and the actin filaments might play key roles in the migration and proliferation of cells. The nuclei of the cells were shrunk on the weakly adhered surfaces, and the S1 stage in which DNA is duplicated in the cell dividing processes might be retarded. As a result, the rate of proliferation of cells was decreased compared to the smooth surface of the control. In conclusion, the results described here are very important in the understanding of the interaction between implanted materials and biosystems.
Saponins are glycosidic compounds present in many plant foods. They are characterized by their ability to lyse cell membranes due to their surface-active properties. Saponins are believed to interact primarily with cholesterol in the cell membrane. In this study, the interaction of soybean(SS) with cell membrane was investigated using erythrocytes as a model. Mechanisms of interaction was also investigated by measuring their binding capacity with different membrane lipid fractions. Throughout the study, gypsophilla saponin(GS) and quillaja saponin(QS) were used to evaluate the membranolytic activity of soybean saponins. All saponins released hemoglobin in a concentration-dependent manner. SS induced 40% hemolysis at the concentration of 400 ppm, however there was no increase in hemoglobin release above 400ppm concentration. 5ppm of GS and 8 ppm of QS hemolyzed 100% of erythrocytes. Isolation of SS fractions by thin layer chromatography revealed that only one non-polar saponin possesses strong hemolytic activity. When saponins were incubated decreased the release of cholesterol. When the hemolytic activity of saponins was measured in the presence of other major membrane lipid components, sphingomyelin significantly reduced the hemolytic activity of SS, while cholesterol reduced the activity of QS. GS showed high affinity to other component(s) in the incubation media as well as lipids. These results suggest that the membranolytic activity of saponins are related to their specific chemical structure, which determines the interaction behavior between saponins and different membrane components, and thereby influence the biological activity.
PLA, PGA and PLGA films were treated with chloric acid mixture solution [70% perchloric acid (HClO$_4$)/potassium chlorate (KClO$_3$) aq. saturated solution, 3 : 2] to increase surface wettability and thus cell compatibility. The surface-treated PLA, PGA, and PLGA films were characterized by the measurement of water contact angle, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Surface wettability of chloric acid-treated PLA, PGA, and PLGA film surfaces was gradually increased with increase of treatment time. Unlike EtOH pre-treatment, chloric acid-treated polymer films maintain hydrophilic surface after drying. In cell adhesion test, fibroblasts were cultured on the chloric acid-treated film surfaces for 1 and 2 days. As the surface wettability increased, the cell adhesion on the surface were increased. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the surface wettability of polymer plays an important role for cell adhesion and proliferation behavior.
Yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) technique has been used to study protein-protein interactions, but its application particularly to a large-scale analysis of protein interaction networks, is limited by the fact that the technique is labor-intensive, based on scoring colonies on plate. Here, we develop a new reporter for the measurement of the protein-protein interactions by flow cytometry. The yeast harboring interacting proteins can also be enriched by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) or magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS). When two interacting proteins are present in the same yeast cell, a reporter protein containing 10 tandem repeats of c-myc epitope becomes localized on the surface of the cell wall, without affecting cell growth. We successful measured the surface display of c-myc epitope upon interacting p53 with SV40 T antigen by flow cytometry. Thus, the newly developed Y2H assay based on the display of c-myc repeat on yeast cell wall could be used to the simultaneous analysis of multiple protein-protein interactions without laborious counting colonies on plate.

A wettability chemogradient on poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) films was prepared by treating the films in air with corona from a knife-type electrode whose power increases gradually along the sample length. The PLGA surfaces oxidized gradually with the increasing corona power, and the wettability chemogradient was created on the surfaces as evidenced by the measurement of water contact angles and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. The wettability chemogradient PLGA surfaces were used to investigate the interaction of four different types of cells such as hepatoma (Hep G2), osteoblast (MG 63), bovine aortic endothelial (CPAE), and fibroblast (NIH/3T3) cells in terms of the surface hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of PLGA. The cells adhered and grown on the chemogradient surface along the sample length were counted and observed by scanning electron microscopy. It was observed that the cells were adhered, spread, and grown more onto the positions with moderate hydrophilicity of the wettability chemogradient PLGA surface than the more hydrophobic or hydrophillic positions, regardless of the cell types used. The maximum adhesion and growth of the cells appeared at around water contact angles of 53~55°. This result seems closely related with the serum protein adsorption on the surface; the serum proteins were also adsorbed more onto the positions with moderate hydrophilicity of the wettability chemogradient surface. It seems that the wettability plays important roles for cell adhesion, spreading and growth on the PLGA surface. The surface modification technique used in this study may be applicable tothe area of tissue engineering for the improvement of tissue compatibility of films- or scaffold-type substrates.

Statement of problem. In the process of bone formation, titanium (Ti) surface roughness is an important factor modulating osteoblastic function. Purpose. This study was carried out to determine the effect of different Ti surface on biologic responses of a human osteoblast-like cell line (MG63). Materials and methods. MG63 cells were cultured on S (smooth), SLA (sandblasted largegrit & acid etching), HA (hydroxyapatite) Ti. The morphology and attachment of the cells were examined by SEM. The cDNAs prepared from total RNAs of MG63 were hybridized to a human cDNA microarray (1,152 elements). Results. The appearances of the surfaces observed with SEM were different in the three types of dental substrates. The surface of SLA and HA were shown to be rougher than S. MG63 cells cultured on SLA and HA were cell-matrix interaction. In the expression of genes involved in osseointegration, upregulated genes were bone morphogenetic protein, Villin, Integrin, Insulin-like growth factors in different surfaces. Downregulated genes were fibroblast growth factor receptor 4, Bcl 2-related protein, collagen, CD4 in different surfaces. Conclusion. The attachment and expression of key osteogenic regulatory genes were enhanced by surface roughness of the dental materials.
