$Al_2O_3$ foam is an important engineering material because of its exceptional high-temperature stability, low thermal conductivity, good wear resistance, and stability in hostile chemical environment. In this work, $Al_2O_3$ foams were designed to control the microstructure, porosity, and cell size by varying different parameters such as the amount of amphiphile, solid loading, and stirring speed. Particle stabilized direct foaming technique was used and the $Al_2O_3$ particles were partially hydrophobized upon the adsorption of valeric acid on particles surface. The foam stability was drastically improved when these particles were irreversibly adsorbed at the air/water interface. However, there is still considerable ambiguity with regard to the effect of process parameters on the microstructure of particle-stabilized foam. In this study, the $Al_2O_3$ foam with open and closed-cell structure, cell size ranging from $20{\mu}m$ to $300{\mu}m$ having single strut wall and porosity from 75% to 93% were successfully fabricated by sintering at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in air.
The microstructure, contents of pectic substances and textural properties of cell masses separated from cooked kindey bean and soybean were investigated. Cooked kidney bean could be easily separated to the individual cells, while soybean yielded mixture of individual cells and cell clusters. The break down of the middle lamella was observed, but cell wall was not injured . Separated cells from kidney bean were spherical, while those from soybean were long sack shape as observed in both optical microscope and SEM. Cooked soybean cell mass, which had higher content of pectic substances, showed higher cohesiveness and adhesiveness compared to kidney bean cell mass.
Tissue engineering scaffolds play a critical role in regulating the reconstructed human tissue development. Various types of scaffolds have been developed in recent years, including fibrous matrix and foam-like scaffolds. The design of scaffold materials has been investigated extensively. However, the design of physical structure of the scaffold, especially fibrous matrices, has not received much attention. This paper compares the different characteristics of fibrous and foam-like scaffolds, and reviews regulatory roles of important scaffold properties, including surface geometry, scaffold configuration, pore structure, mechanical property and bioactivity. Tissue regeneration, cell organization, proliferation and differentiation under different microstructures were evaluated. The importance of proper scaffold selection and design is further discussed with the examples of bone tissue engineering and stem cell tissue engineering. This review addresses the importance of scaffold microstructure and provides insights in designing appropriate scaffold structure for different applications of tissue engineering.

Thin film solar cells have attracted much attention due to their high cell efficiency, comparatively low process cost, and applicability to flexible substrates. In particular, CIGS solar cells have been widely studied and produced because they demonstrated the highest cell efficiency. However, the deposition process of CIGS films generally includes the selenization process conducted at elevated temperature using toxic $H_2Se$ gas. To avoid this selenization process, CIGS thin films were, in this study, deposited by RF sputtering using single composite CIGS target. In addition, the effects of sputtering bias voltage and heat treatment on the microstructural and morphological changes in deposited CIGS films were investigated and discussed.
The deformation behavior of copper during equal channel angular pressing(ECAP) was calculated using a three-dimensional version of a constitutive model based on the dislocation density evolution. Finite element simulations of the variation of the dislocation density and the dislocation cell size with the number of ECAP passes are reported. The calculated stress, strain and cell size are compared with the experimental data for Cu deformed by ECAP in a modified Route C regime. The results of FEM analysis were found to be in good agreement with the experiments. After a rapid initial decrease down to about 200nm in the first ECAP pass, the average cell size was found to change little with further passes. Similarly, the strength increased steeply after the first pass, but tended to saturate with further pressings. The FEM simulations also showed strain non-uniformities and the dependence of the resulting strength on the location within the workpiece.
The objective of this study was to investigate the tensile properties and thermal conductivities of Mg9.3%Al alloy in as-cast state and heat-treated state consisting of fully discontinuous precipitates (DPs), respectively. The fully DPs microstructure was obtained by solution treatment at 405℃ for 24 h, followed by furnace cooling to RT. The as-cast alloy showed a partially divorced eutectic β(Mg17Al12) phase particles formed along the α-(Mg) cell boundaries. The DPs had various apparent (α+β) interlamellar spacings, which is related to different transformation temperatures during the furnace cooling. The DPs microstructure exhibited better tensile strength than the as-cast one, resulting from the higher value of elongation in response to its more homogeneous microstructure. It is noticeable that the DPs microstructure had 12.4% higher thermal conductivity in average than the as-cast one between RT and 200℃. The XRD analyses revealed that the lower Al concentration in the α-(Mg) matrix may well be responsible for the better thermal conductivity of the DPs microstructure.
In order to develop SOFC cell performance, many kind of things were investigated. Electrode microstructure is the one of them therefore we focus on electrodes fabrication easily and efficiently. We can fabricate electrodes easily with Pt using DC magnetron sputtering and sintering. However sputtering is difficult to handle and to grow porous electrodes what we require. On the other hand sintering is much easier than sputtering to make porous and adhesive electrodes. So in this paper we deal with sintering and optimize to deposit electrodes conditions by analyzing electrode microstructure with sacnning electron microscopy(SEM) micrograph. Also, we compare electrochemical performance of cells fabricated by sputtering and sintering.
This paper describes a finite element model of the microstructure of dispersion type nuclear fuels, which can be used to determine the effective thermal conductivity of the fuels during irradiation. The model simulates a representative region of the fuel as a prism shaped unit cell made of brick elements. The elements within the unit cell are assigned material properties of either the fuel or the matrix depending on position, in such a way as to represent randomly distributed fuel particles with a size distribution similar to that of the as manufactured fuel. By applying an appropriate heat flux across the unit cell it is possible to determine the effective thermal conductivity of the unit cell as a function of the volume fraction of the fuel particles. The presence of a fuel/matrix interaction layer is simulated by the addition of a third set of material properties that are assigned to the finite elements that surround each fuel particle. In this way the effective thermal conductivity of the material may also be determined as a function of the volume fraction of the interaction layer. Work is on going to add fission gas bubbles in the fuel as a fourth phase to the model.
The Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL) of fuel cell, are required to provide both delivery of reactant gases to the catalyst layer and removal of water in either vapor or liquid form in typical PEMFCs. In this study, the fabrication of GDL containing Micro Porous Layer (MPL) made of the slurry of PVDF mixed with carbon black is investigated in detail. Physical properties of GDL containing MPL, such as electrical resistance, gas permeability and microstructure were examined, and the performance of the cell using developed GDL with MPL was evaluated. The results show that MPL with PVDF binder demonstrated uniformly distributed microstructure without large cracks and pores, which resulted in better electrical conductivity. The fuel cell performance test demonstrates that the developed GDL with MPL has a great potential due to enhanced mass transport property due to its porous structure and small pore size.
