  • Indoor air quality becomes of a concern recently in view of human health. This study investigates the air diffusion performance and the air change efficiency of a classroom, when outdoor air is introduced in addition to the heating/cooling operation of a ceiling-mounted heat pump. A CFD analysis has been performed to investigate the effect of the discharge angle of the air jets from the heat pump for both parallel and series types of outdoor air system. It is observed that the series type creates more uniform indoor environment compared to the parallel type in general. It can be concluded the discharge angle should not be larger than 40o for the parallel type, in order not to generate thermal stratification in the room.

  • Adjacent housing units suffer inevitable thermal losses if an unheated unit exists in an apartment building. Thermal loss of the units adjoining the unheated apartment can be neglected because the contact area is small and insulators are located in the walls. When insulators are not included in the slab between the upper and lower units, 70% of the heat supplied by an Ondol system may be used in the original unit, but 30% is transferred to the unit on the lower floor. Another 30% can be obtained from the ceiling if the upper floor housing unit is heated. This strong thermal connection is a characteristic of Ondol heating in apartment buildings. When there is an unheated unit, the lower floor unit uses 42.3% more heating energy if there is no insulation and 19.5% if a 35 mm insulator is used as in the current guidelines. Therefore, much thicker insulation should be applied to weaken the thermal connection.

  • Sound absorbing materials used for lightweight panels and interior material are mainly made of fibroid material such as glass wool or rock wool. However these fiber type sound absorbing materials have some problems such that sound absorption could be decreased as time goes by because of durability. In addition, dust scattering from fiber type material can cause another problem in health. In this point of view, this study aims to develop environment friendly sound absorbing material using Hwangto(so called loess or yellow soil), a traditional housing material. Hwangto is natural housing material in Korea and generally known for improving indoor air quality. Hwangto panel is made to construct on the floor, wall and ceiling, and expected that there is not enough absorption. Present study tried to develop environment friendly sound absorbing material that has high sound absorption performance with good environment performance in terms of air quality. Pore rate was designed to maximize the absorption in the specific frequency bands, and two kinds of backing space were applied in order to see the effect of backing space. As a result peak frequency that has maximum absorption is going high as the pore rate is increased. The backing space provides more absorption and makes the peak frequency down to low.

  • The Effects of radiative heat transfer on turbulent flow in a partitioned enclosure is studied numerically. The enclosure is partially divided by a thin, poorly conducting vertical divider projecting from the ceiling of the enclosure. The low Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ model is adopted to calculate the turbulent flow field. The solutions to the radiative transfer equations are obtained by the discrete ordinates method(DOM). This method is based on control volume method and is compatible with the SIMPLER algorithm used to solve the momentum and energy equations. The effects of optical thickness and Planck number on the flow, temperature fields and heat transfer rates are investigated for a moderate Rayleigh number($=10^9$). The changes in buoyant flow fields and temperature distributions due to the variation of baffle length are also analyzed. From the predictions, radiant heat exchange between the baffle and the sidewalls strongly influences the temperature distribution in the baffle and its vicinity and total heat transfer increases as the optical thickness and the baffle length decrease. It is possible to neglect the radiative heat transfer effect when Planck number is over one.

  • In this study, smoke movement in tunnel fire with natural ventilation shaft has been investigated with various size of fire source. Gasoline pool fire with different size of diameter - 73mm, 100mm, 125mm and 154mm - was used to describe fire source. Experimental data is obtained with 1/20 model tunnel test and its results are compared with numerical results. The computation were carried out using FDS 1.0 which is a field model of fire-driven now. Temperature profiles between measured and predicted data are compared along ceiling and near the ventilation shaft. Both results are in good agreement with each other. In order to evaluating a safe egress time in tunnel fire, horizontal smoke front velocity was measured in model tunnel fire tests and those are compared with numerical results. According to the presence or absence of natural ventilation shaft, ventilation effect are estimated quantitatively. Finally, this paper shows that computational fluid dynamics(CFD) is applicable to predict fire-induced flow in tunnel.

  • The performance based design in fire detection system, the effect of high airflow and dilution of smoke produced in any fire situation serve to increase the response time of point-type smoke detectors. This study investigated the smoke density of ceiling, under the air stream and in normal status when fire type is smoldering fires. The result of study, smoke generated in the fire was swept away from nearby spot type smoke detector which failed to actuate because dispersed in diluted form around the room. The concept of performance based design in fire detection system of protected area influenced by high airflow provided the need of active fire detection system such as air sampling smoke detection system.

  • Natural gypsum has been used as a soil amendment in the United States. However, flue gas desulfurization (FGD)-gypsum has not traditionally been used for agricultural purpose although it has potential benefit as a soil amendment. To expand use of FGD-gypsum for agricultural purpose, the effect of FGD-gypsum on soil chemical properties was investigated in the field scales. Application rates for this study were 0 (control), 1.1, and 2.2 Mg ha-1 of FGD-gypsum. After two year application, the soil samples were taken to 110 cm depth and sub-sampled at 10 cm intervals. The heavy metal contents in FGD-gypsum were lower than ceiling levels allowed by regulations for land-applied biosolids. Soil pH was not largely affected by FGD-gypsum application. Although degree of calcium (Ca) saturation in surface horizons increases only slightly with respect to the control, there is a clear decrease in exchangeable aluminum (Al). FGD-gypsum clearly increases the soil electrical conductivity (EC) with increasing application rate. Water-soluble Ca and sulfate is increased with FGD-gypsum application and these ions moved to a depth of at least 80 cm after only 2 years. We conclude that surface application of FGD-gypsum can mitigate toxicity of Al and deficiency of Ca in subsoil of acid soil.

  • Ecological architecture enables people to recycle and reuse architectural resources within the category of ecosystem and also to minimize the effect on environment in a whole process, including architectural planning, usage and exhaustion to use sustainable energies. Rammed earth wall construction method utilized in EcoCenter located in Crystalwaters ecological village in Austrailia is a good example, which maximizes its advantages and also covers its limits to use soil and wood as structural resources. In a case of wood, they used non-treated timber to minimize environmental load and utilized used materials in openings. In the roofs, aluminum coated steel which is plated with zinc collects rain effectively even though it is not regenerable. Nontoxic finishes and insulation in floor and ceiling with used papers are able to minimize its environmental load. Solar energy system applied in EcoCenter enables them to market extra energy with electricity companies as well as support needs of its own buildings to utilize photovoltaic panel system with PV panels. Passive solar system is planned effectively in heating and cooling to apply regenerative walls in a use of rammed earth wall construction and natural ventilation systems through openings.

  • In this study, the combined-type diffuser developed by the Authors, in a previous study, was applied to a residential space. The performance of a ventilation and thermal environment, created by the use of a combined-type diffuser was compared to the pan-type diffuser widely used in apartment houses. In cooling conditions, because of the relatively high air flow rate of ceiling cassette-type air conditioners, the characteristics of airflow distribution in a room were governed by the air conditioner's airflow. In heating conditions, because of the low air flow rate of the diffuser, the characteristics of airflow distribution were governed by the buoyancy effect created by cold external walls and a hot floor. In terms of the Air Diffusion Performance Index (ADPI), which is a thermal environmental index, the result of a combined-type diffuser was greater than a pan-type diffuser in both of cooling and heating conditions. Consequently, the combined-type diffuser showed equal or superior ventilation and thermal environment performance compared to a pan-type diffuser.
