PURPOSES : Road subsidence occurs owing to road cavities, which cause many social and environmental problems, especially in cities. Recently, road cavities were detected by various ground radars and repair works were carried out against the detected cavities. The condition assessments related to the road cavities are necessary to understand the potential risk of the cavities. Therefore, in this study, a numerical study was performed to assess the various conditions of road cavities. METHODS : The numerical method adopted in this study is the discrete element approach, and it is suitable for analyzing the condition because it can consider the movement of the soil particles in the surrounded cavity areas. In addition, the triaxial test was modeled and performed under various cavity conditions inside the specimens. RESULTS : The conditions of different cavity locations and shapes were analyzed to identify the effect of cavity state. Three general cases of particle size distributions were formulated to identify the effect of surrounding ground conditions. As a result, the degree of decrement and volumetric strain were varied depending on the locations and shapes of the cavity. Only minor changes were observed when the particle size distributions were altered. CONCLUSIONS : The strength reduction was higher when the cavity formed was larger and located in the upper zone. Similar to the cavity shape, strength reduction and volume deformation are more influenced by the width than the length of the cavities. There is an influence from ground conditions such as the particle size distribution, especially on the wide cavity.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in breast tumor bed volume during whole breast irradiation (WBI). Materials and Methods: From September 2011 to November 2012, thirty patients who underwent breast-conserving surgery (BCS) followed by WBI using computed tomography (CT) simulation were enrolled. Simulation CT scans were performed before WBI (CT1) and five weeks after the breast irradiation (CT2). The tumor bed was contoured based on surgical clips, seroma, and postoperative change. We retrospectively analyzed the factors associated with tumor bed volumetric change. Results: The median tumor bed volume on CT1 and CT2 was 29.72 and 28.6 mL, respectively. The tumor bed volume increased in 9 of 30 patients (30%) and decreased in 21 of 30 patients (70%). The median percent change in tumor bed volume between initial and boost CT was -5%. Seroma status (p = 0.010) was a significant factor in tumor bed volume reduction of 5% or greater. However, patient age, body mass index, palpability, T stage, axillary lymph node dissection, and tumor location were not significant factors for tumor bed volumetric change. Conclusion: In this study, volumetric change of tumor bed cavity was frequent. Patients with seroma after BCS had a significant volume reduction of 5% or greater in tumor bed during breast irradiation. Thus, resimulation using CT is indicated for exquisite boost treatment in breast cancer patients with seroma after surgery.
Droplet impinging into a cavity at micro-scale is one of important fluidic issues for microfabrications, e.g. bio-chip applications and inkjet deposition processes in the PLED panel manufacturing. The droplets generally dispensing from an inkjet head, which contains an array of nozzles, have a volume in several picoliters, while each nozzle jets the droplets into cavities with micron-meter size located on substrates. Due to measurement difficulties at micro-scale, the numerical simulation could serve as an efficient and preliminary way to evaluate the micro-sized droplet impinging behavior into a cavity. The micro-fluidic flow is computed by solving the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations through a finite volume discretization. The droplet front is predicted by a volume-of-fluid approach, in which the surface tension is modeled as a function of the fluid concentration. This paper discusses the influence of fluid properties, such as surface tension and fluid viscosity, on micro-fluidic characteristics at different jetting speeds in the deposition process via the proposed numerical approach.

The upper and lower lateral cartilages provide the key to the lower cartilaginous portion of the nose. Lifting the cartilages is essential procedure for correction of unilateral cleft lip nose deformity. After correction of cleft lip nose deformity, authors used acoustic rhinometry (AR) to compare the lower nasal cavity of cleft side with non-cleft side. AR is a well known new, non-invasive diagnostic technique in which nasal geometry is assessed by means of acoustic reflection. From June 1996 to January 2004, we performed acoustic rhinometric analysis after correction of unilateral cleft lip nose deformity. This study involved 40 children of age ranged from 3 months to 8 years. Subjects were divided into the group of incomplete unilateral cleft lip nose deformity(20 subjects), and the group of complete unilateral cleft lip nose deformity(20 subjects). Results show that lower nasal cavity volume between non-cleft side and cleft side has no difference, and better results were obtained when nasal molding prong was applied at cleft side nostril. The results between incomplete type and complete type have no significant difference. In conclusion, AR is an effective method to calibrate cross sectional area and nasal cavity volume of unilateral cleft lip nose deformity, and furthermore effective in comparing the volume of cleft side with non-cleft side after unilateral cleft lip nose deformity correction with lifting the lower lateral cartilages to the upper lateral cartilages.
It is well known that the family-mold has an advantage to reduce the cost for production and mold. However, defects are frequently occurred by over packing the smaller volume cavity during molding, especially when the family-mold has a volumetric difference between two cavities. In this study, the cavity-filling imbalance was confirmed by the temperature and the pressure sensors, and a variable-runner system was developed for balancing the cavity-filling. Experiments of balancing the cavity filling was carried out in the family-mold with the variable-runner system, and balancing the cavity-filling was confirmed by changing the cross-sectional area of a runner in the variable-runner system with the temperature and pressure sensors. The influence of the injection speed to the balancing-capability of the variable-runner system was also examined in the experiment.

A numerical simulation of an incompressible cavity flow is conducted. Two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are integrated using staggered grid and a finite volume method with C-QUICK scheme for spatial derivatives and fully implicit scheme for the time derivatives. SIMPLE-C algorithm is employed to solve the pressure field. Computational results show that the third eddy is generated in the shear layer mode but not in the steady mode. This signifies that the third eddy plays an important role in cavity flow stability. As a means to control the flow, jet blowing is applied to a position below the cavity upstream edge. Effects of flow control parameters on the stability such as the frequency, the phase, and the velocity magnitude are reported.
During stamping processes, the air trapped between sheet metal and the die cavity can be highly compressed and ultimately reduce the shape accuracy of formed panels. To prevent this problem, vent holes and passages are sometimes drilled into the based on expert experience and know-how. CAE can be also used for analyzing the air behavior in die cavity during stamping process, incorporating both elasto-plastic behavior of sheet metal and the fluid dynamic behavior of air. This study presents sheet metal forming simulation combined simultaneously with simulation of air behavior in the die cavity. There are three approaches in modeling of air behavior. One is a simple assumption of the bulk modulus having a constant pressure depending on volume change. The next is the use of the ideal gas law having uniform pressure and temperature in air domain. The third is FPM (Finite point method) having non-uniform pressure in air domain. This approach enables direct coupling of mechanical behavior of solid sheet metal and the fluid behavior of air in sheet metal forming simulation, and its result provides the first-hand idea for the location, size and number of the vent holes. In this study, commercial software, PAM-$STAMP^{TM}$ and PAM-$SAFE^{TM}$, were used.

The high-pressure resin transfer molding (HP-RTM) process has a very effective for the mass production of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) for light weight in the automotive industry. In developing robust equipment, new process and fast cure matrix systems reduces significantly the cycle time less than 5 minutes in recent years. This paper describes the cavity pressure, temperature and molding characteristics of the HP-RTM process. The HP-RTM mold was equipped with two cavity pressure sensors and three temperature sensors. The cavity pressure characteristics of the HP-RTM injection, pressurization, and curing processes were studied. This experiment was conducted with selected process parameters such as mold cap size, maximum press force, and injection volume. Consequently, this monitoring method provides correlations between the selected process parameters and final forming characteristics in this work.
This paper describes unsteady internal flow characteristics of a cathode air blower, used for the 1 kW fuel cell system. The cathode air blower considered in the present study is a diaphragm type blower. To analyze the flow field inside the diaphragm cavity, compressible unsteady numerical simulation is performed. Moving mesh system is applied to the numerical analysis for describing the volume change of the diaphragm cavity in time. Throughout a numerical simulation by modeling the inlet and outlet valves in a diaphragm cavity, unsteady nature of an internal flow is successfully analyzed. Variations of mass flow rate, force and pressure on the lower moving plate of a diaphragm cavity are evaluated in time. The computed mass flow rate at the same pressure and rotating frequency of a motor has a maximum of 5 percent error with the experimental data. It is found that flow pattern at the suction process is more complex compared to that at the discharge process. Unsteady nature of internal flow in the cathode air blower is analyzed in detail.
