Three-dimensional cavity flow is analyzed with the code by using unstructured grid. Incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are used as governing equations, and governing equations are discretized by Finite Volume Method. Artificial compressibility method, proposed by Chorin, and developed by Soh, is used for coupling a pressure and a velocity. Cell-centered scheme is adopted in the code, this has the effect of having denser grid than nodal scheme when the same grid is used. Weighted Averaging scheme is used for the value at a nodal point. Cavity flow is analyzed, and this computed results are compared with the results in the research report
Three-dimensional incompressible flow past an open cavity in a channel is investigated using Detached Eddy Simulation(DES). The length to depth ratio of the cavity is 2 and the Reynolds number defined with the cavity depth is 3,360. The DES methods are based on the Menter's SST model. In the present work, two types of inflow conditions are used: one is RANS profile, the other is LES inflow from another Large Eddy Simulation(LES) of fully developed channel flow. The results are compared with experimental data and LES results in terms of the mean statistics, temporal physics and scalar transport phenomenon of the flow.
This paper describes an internal flow characteristics of a fuel pressurized blower, used for 1kW domestic fuel cell system. To analyze the flow field inside the diaphragm cavity, compressible unsteady numerical simulation is introduced. SST model with scalable wall function is employed to estimate the eddy viscosity. Moving mesh system is applied to the numerical analysis for describing the volume change of a diaphragm cavity in time. Throughout numerical simulation with the modeling of the inlet and outlet valves in a diaphragm cavity, unsteady nature of an internal flow is successfully analyzed. Force variations on the lower plate of a diaphragm cavity are evaluated in time. It is found that the driving force at the suction stage of a diaphragm cavity is more necessary than that at the discharging stage.
Fully three-dimensional Large Eddy Simulation calculations of the flow past 2D cavity are conducted to study the purging of neutrally buoyant or dense miscible contaminants introduced instantaneously inside the cavity. The length to depth ratio(L/D) is 2 and Reynolds number based on the depth is 3,360. Fully developed turbulent inflow are fed at the inlet from precursor simulation of channel flow. Mean flow pattern and unsteady features are investigated based on the experimental data of Pereira and Sousa. From the study of mass exchange processes, it is found that the mechanism of removal of the contaminant is very different between the non-buoyant and buoyant cases. In the buoyant case, internal wave motion which interacts with a strong cavity vortex is dominant in the ejection mechanism of the contaminants.

Knowledge of airflow characteristics in nasal cavities is essential to understand the physiological and pathological aspects of nasal breathing. Several studies have utilized physical models of the healthy nasal cavity to investigate the relationship between nasal anatomy and airflow. In our laboratory, there have been a series of experimental investigations on the nasal airflow in normal, abnormal, and deformed nasal cavity models cavity models by PIV under both constant and periodic flow conditions. In this time normal and several deformed nasal cavity models, which simulate surgical operation, Turbinectomy, are investigated numerically by the FVM general purpose code and PIV analysis. The comparisons of these results are appreciated. Dense CT data and careful treatment of model surface under the ENT doctor's advice provide more sophisticated cavity models. The Davis (LaVision Co.) code is used for PIV flow analysis. Average and RMS distributions have been obtained for inspirational and expirational nasal airflows in the normal and deformed nasal cavities.
Study of the wave structure and shear layer in the vicinity of a wall mounted cavity is done by time averaged colour schlieren and time resolved instantaneous shadowgraph technique in an M=1.7 flowfield. Effect of change of cavity width on flow structure is investigated by using constant length to depth (L/D) ratio cavity models with varying length to width (L/W) ratio of 0.83 to 4. The time averaged shock wave structure was observed to change with change in cavity width. Dependence of the shock angle at the leading edge on the shear layer width is also evident from the images obtained. Unsteadiness in the flow field in terms of shear layer dynamics and quasi steady nature of shock waves was evident from the images obtained during instantaneous shadowgraph experiments. Apart from the leading and trailing edge shocks, several other waves and flow features were observed. These flow features and the associated physical phenomena are discussed in details and presented in the paper.
The scaled water-cooled Reactor Cavity Cooling System (RCCS) experimental facility reproduces a passive safety feature to be implemented in Generation IV nuclear reactors. It keeps the reactor cavity and other internal structures in operational conditions by removing heat leakage from the reactor pressure vessel. The present work uses Flownex one-dimensional thermal-fluid code to model the facility and predict the experimental thermal-hydraulic behavior. Two representative steady-state cases defined by the bulk volumetric flow rate are simulated (Re = 2,409 and Re = 11,524). Results of the cavity outlet temperature, risers' temperature profile, and volumetric flow split in the cooling panel are also compared with the experimental data and RELAP system code simulations. The comparisons are in reasonable agreement with the previous studies, demonstrating the ability of Flownex to simulate the RCCS behavior. It is found that the low Re case of 2,409, temperature and flow split are evenly distributed across the risers. On the contrary, there's an asymmetry trend in both temperature and flow split distributions for the high Re case of 11,524.

The finite difference lattice Boltzmann method(FDLBM) is a quite recent approach for simulating fluid flow, which has been proven as a valid and efficient tool in a variety of complex flow problems. It is considered an attractive alternative to conventional FDM and FVM, because it recovers the Navier-Stokes equations and is computationally more stable, and easily parallelizable to simulate for various laminar flows and a direct simulation of aerodynamics sounds. However, the research of a numerical simulation of turbulent flow by FDLBM, which is important to analyze the structure of turbulent flow in engineering fields, is not carried out. In this research, the FDLBM built in the turbulent model is applied, and a flowfield around 2-dimensional square to validate the applied model with 2D9V is simulated. Besides, 2D computation of the cavity noise generated by flow over a cavity at a Mach number of 0.1 and a Reynolds number based on cavity depth of 5000 is calculated. The computation result is well presented a understanding of the physical phenomenon of tonal noise occurred primarily by well-jet shear layer and vortex shedding and an aeroacoustic feedback loop.
In the polymer shaping process that uses molds, the quality of the molded products is determined not only by the flow of the (molten) polymer but also by the air venting in the cavity. Inadequate air venting in the cavity can cause defects in the product, such as voids, short shot, or black streaks. As it is critical to consider the location and size of the vents for proper venting of the air in the cavity, a method that predicts the flow of air and material is required. The venting of air by the flow of rubber inside the cavity was simulated by using a multi-phase computational fluid dynamics method. Through computer simulation, the interface of rubber and air over time was predicted. Then, the velocity and pressure distribution of the venting air were observed. Our research proposes a fundamental method for analyzing the multi-phase flow of polymer materials and air inside the cavity of a mold.
