  • For the dectection of small cavity in the hard rock, we investigated the feasibility of crosswell travel-time tomography and Kirchhoff migration technique. In travel-time tomography, first arrival anomaly caused by small cavity was investigated by numerical modeling based on the knowledge of actual field information. First arrival delay was very small (<0.125 msec) and detectable receiver offset range was limited to 4m with respect to $1\%$ normalized first arrival anomaly. As a consequence, it was turned out that carefully designed survey array with both sufficient narrow spatial spacing and temporal (<0.03125 msec) sampling were required for small cavity detection. Also, crosswell Kirchhoff migration technique was investigated with both numerical and real data. Stack section obtained by numerical data shows the good cavity image. In crosswell seismic data, various unwanted seismic events such as direct wave and various mode converted waves were alto recorded. To remove these noises und to enhance the diffraction signal, combination of median and bandpass filtering was applied and prestack and stacked migration images were created. From this, we viewed the crosswell migration technique as one of the adoptable method for small cavity detection.

  • Many implantable hearing aids are being developed as alternatives to conventional hearing aids which has inconveniences for use and social stigma that make hearing-impaired people avoid to wear it. Particularly, the fully-implantable middle ear hearing devices (F-IMEHD) are being actively studied for mixed or sensorineural hearing impaired people. In development of F-IMEHD, the most difficult problem is improving the performance of implantable microphone. Recently, Cho et al. have studied the tympanic membrane installed microphone which has better sensitivity and is easier to operate on patient than the microphone implanted under the skin. But, it may cause howling problem due to the feedback signal via oval window and ossicle chain from the transducer on round window in the middle ear cavity, therefore, a feedback canceller is necessary. In this paper, we designed NLMS (normalized least mean square) adaptive feedback canceller for F-IMEHD with tympanic membrane installed microphone and a transducer implemented at round window, and computer simulation was performed to verify its operation. The designed adaptive feedback canceller has a delay filter, a 64 point FIR fixed filter and a 8-tap adaptive FIR filter. Computer simulation of the feedback path is modeled by using the data obtained through human cadaver experiment.

  • Cigarettes were made using a triple filter with several porous materials in its cavity. The removal effect of the adsorbents on carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide in cigarette smoke was investigated with the variation of their surface area and pore volume distributions. Several attempts were made to activated coconut shell based char under the fixed steam purging rate. 1. The specific surface area increased in number of micropore. It was found for transitional pore to have a little effect on the total surface area. 2. A Small amount of the particulate matter adsorbed on the adsorbents with transitional pores, Zeolite showed a little effect on the carbon monoxide adsorption though its small pore volume, but there was no significant difference in the adsorption capacity zeolite and the others. 3. In the adsorption for hydrogen cyanide as a vapor phase in cigarette smoke, the adsorption effect of the adsorbents increased remarkably with increasing their surface area and number of micropore. It was considered that the adsorbents with small pore volume like molecular seive 4A, in which the capillary diffusion of adsorbates could not be able, would not be effective for the adsorption of hydrogen cyanide.

  • A fiber laser of which wavelength was scanned by an intra-cavity FP (Fabry-Perot) filter was used to interrogate a fiber Bragg grating strain sensor array. We calculated the wavelength variation of the fiber laser using quadrature signal processing with an unbalanced M/Z (Mach-Zehnder) interferometer and time-delayed sampling technique. The calculated wavelengths are mapped to corresponding temporal reflection peaks from the sensor array, which enables more accurate and stable interrogation without the problems caused by the FP filter's nonlinear characteristics. Wavelength resolution of ∼20 pm was obtained in our experimental setup, which could have been greatly enhanced with faster phase modulation.

  • A pulsed Ti:sapphire laser with a Z-folded cavity, which was pumped by a freqeuncy-doubled Nd:YAG laser, was developed. It shows 120 nm wavelength tuning range from 740 nm to 860 nm with 90 nm FWHM under a pumping energy of 3 mJ with 18% output coupler. Using a birefringent filter, the effective efficiency was improved about 10 times compare to without a birefringent filter. The output energy obtained was $\365mu$Jwith 4 nm FWHM. And the wavelength tuning range was broadened to about 160 nm within an output energy fluctuation of $\pm$10%.

  • We fabricated erbium-doped fiber ring laser with a new structure that can operate in C- & L-band wavelength region. The wave-length of the laser can be tuned continuously over 102 nm between 1510.4-1612.6 nm by insertion of the fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter (FFP-TF) in the ring cavity. By use of the wavelength tunable characteristics of our fiber laser, we measured absorption spectra of more than fifty transition lines of the acetylene ($^{13}$ C$_2$H$_2$) molecule with high signal to noise ratio (SNR).

  • In this study a new design concept of the Fabry-Perot filter, constructed with an anisotropic space layer and a couple of isotropic mirrors, was proposed based on the Maxwell equations and the characteristic matrix method. The single- and double-cavity Fabry-Perot filters were designed, and their optical properties were investigated with a developed software package. In addition, the dependence of the transmittance and phase shift for two orthogonal polarization states on the column angle of the anisotropic space layer and the incidence angle were discussed. We demonstrated that the polarization state of electromagnetic waves and phase shifts can be modulated by exploiting an anisotropic space layer in a polarization F-P filter. Birefringence of the anisotropic space layer provided a sophisticated phase modulation with varied incidence angles over a broad range, resulting in a wide-angle phase shift. This new concept would be useful for designing optical components with isotropic and anisotropic materials.

  • An exhaust muffler is one of the simple and effective means to meet the demand for a quiet vehicle, and it deserves a close attention to effectively reduce the engine noise. The transfer function technique is one of the tools that have been used to analyze the noise characteristics of the exhaust muffler. In this paper we obtained a transfer function using the forward-going and backward-going components of sound pressure in the exhaust muffler, which is compatible wiht lattice filter algorithm. This form of transfer function is obtained for the basic elements of a muffler, such as uniform tube, open termin- ation, closed termination, anechoic termination, expansion, contraction, extended-tube resonator, hole, Helmholtz resonator, and concentric hole-cavity resonator. The results are combined to produce the transfer function of various types of mufflers. With this transfer function we calculate the transmission and insertion losses of mufflers, and examined the effects of various design parameters. Comparisons were made between the calculation and experimental results, which showed a good agreement, and we conclude that the transfer function of lattice form can be used to analyze the noise characteristics of the exhaust mufflers.

  • In this paper, prior to the flight model X-band dual-mode circular cavity filter required for the high power transmission of the observation payload in the geostationary satellite, the development model are designed and analyzed to show the analytical multipactor requirement margin. First of all, the multipaction breakdown power sensitivities were analyzed by changing the iris width and thickness within the filter, and through that the iris width and thickness was selected and then the multipaction threshold powers over the frequencies within the bandwidth were analyzed and the required margin of 8 dB was obtained. Also for the high power transmission filter, another important phenomena known as corona breakdown are analyzed for the iris width and thickness changes. Finally the development model manufactured was tested and the results met the key requirements.
