  • Formaldehyde (FA) is an important industrial chemical, but it can cause allergic reactions, sick building syndrome and so on. It has also been observed to cause cancer in scientific studies using laboratory animals, and it even causes cancer in humans. Natural products such as ginseng and pine needle containing complicated mixtures of organic chemicals are widely used in the world, because their effective components are responsible for some pharmacological activities including antioxidative effect, anticancer effect. We investigate the effect of Korean ginseng (GE), pine needle extract (PE) and combined GE and PE (cNPE) on mouse lung injury by FA exposure. GE, PE and cNPE was directly transported to pulmonary cells through respiratory organ by nebulizer inhalation. In the case of FA exposure, the pulmonary structure was damaged and its function became abnormal. However, cNPE-FA, GE-FA, and PE-FA treated groups showed similar with the control group compared with FA group. Among them, GE was proved to be more effective than any other extracts. These results demonstrate that natural product extracts could protect pulmonary structure and function against FA exposure.

  • The LIM can be used as a transport system with wheel structure. The structural tolerance cause the airgap unbalance and that effects on the LIM performance. The effect of airgap unbalance on the motor performance such as thrust force, velocity and armature current are investigated by using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). From this numerical works, it is known that the airgap unbalance almost does not effect on the motor performance and LIM for transport system is robust to the structural tolerance.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the preference and value of consumers through the package design of cosmetics with the concept of cause branding, and to propose a package design that can satisfy consumers' needs. I have recruited an experimental group that emphasizes the importance of package design in purchasing cosmetics. And Survey and in-depth interviews were conducted by comparing cause brand's product with general brand's product. In the first experiment, the items were classified into cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses and a total of 31 subjects were surveyed. In the second experiment, six interviewees were interviewed through a questionnaire prepared by extracting 4 items from Sheth 's consumption value standard. As a result of the experiment, consumers preferred a design that can quickly and accurately grasp the information of the product. Especially, it is not easy to know whether it is a cause brand's product. So It should be stated in the package how it will be socially beneficial.

  • Objectives: This paper examines the mediation effect of depression in the relationship between parental abuse, parental alcoholism, and suicidal ideation in university students. Methods: A survey on abusive experience from parents, parental alcoholism, depression, and suicidal ideation was conducted with 415 students from six universities. Structural equation analysis was performed using the AMOS program. Results: The result demonstrates that depression has some mediation effects between parental abuse and suicidal ideation in university students. Meanwhile, depression has an entire mediation effect between parental alcoholism and suicidal ideation. Conclusions: This study shows that the parental alcoholism by itself did not affect suicidal ideation in university students, but depression did. Experience of parental abuse is a significant risk factor which may cause suicidal ideation, and depression may cause suicidal ideation indirectly. It calls for efforts to prevent parental abuse and emphasizes the necessity of paying primary attention to the mediation effect of depression in preventing suicidal ideation.

  • Statistics is the science of data. As the foundation of scientific knowledge, data refers to evidentiary facts from the nature of reality by human action, observation, or experiment. Clinicians should be aware of the conditions of good data to support the validity of clinical modalities in reading scientific articles, one of the resources to revise or update their clinical knowledge and skills. The cause-effect link between clinical modality and outcome is ascertained as pattern statistic. The uniformity of nature guarantees the recurrence of data as the basic scientific evidence. Variation statistics are examined for patterns of recurrence. This provides information on the probability of recurrence of the cause-effect phenomenon. Multiple causal factors of natural phenomenon need a counterproof of absence in terms of the control group. A pattern of relation between a causal factor and an effect becomes recognizable, and thus, should be estimated as relation statistic. The type and meaning of each relation statistic should be well-understood. A study regarding a sample from the population of wide variations require clinicians to be aware of error statistics due to random chance. Incomplete human sense, coarse measurement instrument, and preconceived idea as a hypothesis that tends to bias the research, which gives rise to the necessity of keen critical independent mind with regard to the reported data.

  • It is well recognized that a excessive temperature gradient from the junction of head to skirt in axial direction in a hot pressure vessel can cause unpredicted high thermal stress at the junction and/or in axial direction of a skirt. this thermal stress resulting from axial thermal gradient may be a major cause of unsoundness of structural integrity. In case of cyclic operation of hot pressure vessels, the thermal stress becomes one of the primary design consideration because of the possibility of fracture as a result of cyclic thermal fatigue and progressively incremental plastic deformation. To perform thermal stress analysis of the junction and cylindrical skirt of a vessel, or, at least, to inspect quantitatively the magnitude and effect of thermal stress, the temperature profile of the vessel and skirt must be known. This paper demonstrated the temperature distribution and thermal stress analysis for the junction of skirt to head using F.E. analysis. Effect of air pocket in crotch space was quantitatively investigated to minimize the temperature gradient causing the thermal stress in axial direction. Effect of the skirt height on thermal stresses was also studied. Analysis results were compared with theoretical formulas to verify th applicability to the strength calculation in design field.

  • Korea's overseas construction industry has been rather depressed by the weakened profitability as well as the sharp decrease of the market shares due to the lack of international competitiveness and the declined international market following the outbreak of Iraq war. There exist a lot of various risks in performing the overseas construction, and especially EPC projects, which entail complicated process from different parts, also require a sophisticated procurement and management skill. Subsequently, to survive in the competitive international market, we need to establish strategies to select potentially profitable projects at the initial stage of bidding process and to mitigate the high degree of risk exposures through contract negotiation and its adjustment. This research provides the profitability evaluation bases, with which overseas construction participants can forecast and analyze the risk more systematically, by eliciting profit-influencing factors from real overseas construction projects and structuring their cause-and-effect relationships. The profitability causal hierarchy structure describes the profitability factors' hierarchy in details and their interrelationships. It also enables us to find out critical factors directly related to profitability aggravation through a qualitative analysis. Ultimately, with this hierarchy structure as the base, the research will suggest how to develop the quantitative profitability forecasting model.

  • Background: Even though many studies have examined the possible effect of low-fat diet on breast cancer survival, the relationship remains unclear. Objectives: To summarize the current evidence about the effect of post-diagnostic low-fat diet on recurrence and all-cause mortality of breast cancer. Methods: We conducted a search of Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library and as a result two randomized controlled trials (RCT) and one large multi-center prospective cohort study with 9,966 breast cancer patients were included in this report. Results: Post-diagnostic low-fat diet reduced risk of recurrence of breast cancer by 23% (HR=0.77, 95%CI 0.63 to 0.94, P=0.009) and all cause mortality of breast cancer by 17% (HR=0.83, 95%CI 0.69 to 1.00, P=0.05). Conclusions: This meta-analysis suggested the post-diagnostic low-fat diet can improve breast cancer survival by reducing risk of recurrence. However, more trials of the relationship between low-fat diet and allcause mortality of breast cancer are still needed.

  • In automotive applicatons or water vehicles, the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) stack is keep moving while their operation. Especially the inclination environment can take a effect to fuel cell stack perfromance, because this condition can cause a bad effect to water exhaust of fuel cell stack. In this study, a large scale stack(over 100kW power) is inclined upto 30 degree in lengthwise and crosswise using stack lift equipment. And the stack is operated in 10~100% load. No significant change has appeared in crosswise inclined condition and lenthwise low angle. But in lenthwise large angle tilting condition, the fuel cell performance has significantly decreased. And this performance decrease is aggravated in low load. An active water exhaust device is applied to the stack to prevent the performance decrease. And in lenthwise large angle tilting condition, this device cause a good effect to fuel cell stack performance.
