  • A 7 years-old intact female dog (4.8 kg) was referred with primary complaints of enlarged surface lymph nodes, cardiac murmur, coughing and exercise intolerance. Diagnostic imaging studies found cardiomegaly with distended caudal vena cava, marked left ventricular and interventrciular septal thickening and flattening, severe aortic and pulmonic stenosis (~5 m/s), and mitral and tricuspid regurgitation (~4 m/s). Cytology for the samples obtained from submandibular lymph node and left ventricle revealed high grade malignant lymphoma. The case was diagnosed as cardiac lymphoma. The dog was treated with prednisolone (2 mg/kg, PO, q24h), lomustine (80 $mg/m^2$ PO, q3wk), diltiazem (1 mg/kg, PO, q12h) and enalalpril (0.5 mg/kg, PO, q12h). The clinical signs were improved after therapy. The dog is still on the chemotherapy and regularly checked up.

  • Dirofilaria immitis, the causative agent of canine heartworm disease, inhabits mainly in the pulmonary arteries and the heart of dogs and cats, causing circulatory and respiratory disorders. Although diagnosis of the disease is based on the presence of microfilaria in the peripheral blood or of specific antigens released from the adult worms into the peripheral blood, the severity of the infection and the assessment of disease progression are based on the clinical signs and radiographic image analysis. We analysed 12 mixed-bred Jindo dogs naturally infected with Dirofilaria immitis without any clinical signs and compared the radiographic images of the heart and the lung with the number of adult worms at necropsy. The dorsoventral radiographs of 12 infected dogs revealed that the right caudal lobar pulmonary arteries (RCaLPA) were dialated in 66.7% of dogs, whereas the main pulmonary artery segment was enlarged in 50.3% of dogs. The cranial lobar pulmonary arteries (RCrLPA) were dilated or pruned in 33.3% of dogs. All dogs displayed the interstitial lung pattern, while the vertebral heart size (VHS) was of normal range. Although a range of 9 to 166 adult worms (av. 45.6) was found in the pulmonary arteries, in the heart or in the vena cava, no correlation with the radiographic findings and/or with the clinical signs was observed.

  • Objective : This study was carried out to understand effects of ginseng(hearinafter ; GS, Panax Ginseng) extract on regeneration responses on injured sciatic nerves in rats. Methods :Using white mouse, we damaged sciatic nerve & central nerve, and then applied GS to the lesion. Then we observed regeneration of axon and non-neuron. Results : 1. NF-200 protein immunostaining for the visualization of axons showed more distal elongation of sciatic nerve axons in GS-treated group than saline-treated control 3 and 7 days after crush injury. 2. GAP-43 protein was increased in the injured sciatic nerve and further increased by GS treatment. Enhanced GAP-43 protein signals were also observed in DRG prepared from the rats given nerve injury and GS treatment. 3. GS treatment in vivo induced enhanced neurite outgrowth in preconditioned DRG sensory neurons. In vitro treatment of GS on sensory neurons from intact DRG also caused increased neurite outgrowth. 4. Phospho-Erk1/2 protein levels were higher in the injured nerve treated with GS than saline. Phospho-Erk1/2 protein signals were mostly found in the axons in the injured nerve. 5. NGF and Cdc2 protein levels showed slight increases in the injured nerves of GS-treated group compared to saline-treated group. 6. The number of Schwann cell population was significantly increased by GS treatment in the injured sciatic nerve. GS treatment with cultured Schwann cells increased proliferation and Cdc2 protein signals. 7. GS pretreatment into the injured spinal cord generated increased astrocyte proliferation and oligodendrocytes in culture. In vitro treatment of GS resulted in more differentiated pericytoplasmic processes compared with saline treatment. 8. More arborization around the injury cavity and the occurrence at the caudal region of CST axons were observed in GS-treated group than in saline-treated group. Conclusion :GS extract may have the growth-promoting activity on regenerating axons in both peripheral and central nervous systems.

  • The first lesion in neural tissue produced by electrical currents were made in the 19th century by workers using direct current. In 1953, Sweet and Mark clearly demonstrated that DC lesions have unpredictable and ragged borders and may vary in size. They, as well as Hunsperger and Wyss, suggested that the use of high frequency currents might provide improved results and were proved correct. However, $Bovie^{(R)}$ electrosurgical unit may also be used in percutaneous medial branch neurotomy if a lesion made at a point or the dorsal surface of the transverse process just caudal to the most medial end of the superior edge of the transverse process (Bogduk's method). At this point the medial branch lies on the bone and its depth and medial displacement are defined by the bone which precludes the need for lateral radiographs to check placement. A lesion was made at same target point using the $Bovie^{(R)}$ electrosurgical unit in a 41 year male patient who had received a Kaneda operation because of L2 compression fracture. The patient was relieved of pain without any adverse effects.

  • For the simple operations of the perineal region, caudal, epidural and saddle blocks of analgesia are preferable anesthesia techniques in men. But, if the operations shoud be delayed or the physicians are willing to observe and manipulate the patients for a couple of days, as in the ureteral stone manipulation, continuous epidural analgesia will be a reliable method. The authors have observed 36 male patients of ureteral calculi with continuous lumbar epidural analgesia for the purpose of elimination of an undesirable pain sensation which was associated with the transurethral cystoscopic manipulation. The results were as follows: 1) In most cases, the anesthetics used were 1% lidocaine 20 ml through the $L_{3-4}$ and $L_{4-5}$ interspace with 4~6cm of catheter tip advancement mainly to cephalad. 2) There was no motor weakness or paralysis in the lower extremities except some numbness and paresthesia on the perineal area. 3) Besides the various minor complications, there were no problems in respiration with small doses of morphine extradurally. 4) Among them, four cases of ureteral calculi dropped into the bladder spontaneously due to the epidural technique during transportation of the patients from the pain clinic to the urology out-clinic. One case of calculi was dropped by the aid of instrumentation at the ward, and twelve cases of calculi were removed directly by Dormia stone basket in the scopic room. For the remaining patients, we deduced that their calculi was be evacuated out because there were no complaints were notified after discharge.

  • Control of blood pressure is maintained by the interaction between the arterial baroreflex and vestibulosympathetic reflex during postural changes. In this study, the contributions of vestibular receptors and baroreceptors to the maintenance of blood pressure following acute hypotension were compared in terms of phosphorylated extracellular regulated protein kinase (pERK) expression in the nucleus tractus solitaries (NTS). Expression of pERK in the NTS was measured in conscious rats that had undergone bilateral labyrinthectomy (BL) and/or sinoaortic denervation (SAD) 5, 10, 20, and 40 min following acute hypotension induced by sodium nitroprusside (SNP) infusion. Expression of pERK increased significantly in the NTS in the control group following SNP infusion, and the expression peaked at 10 min after SNP infusion. The number of pERK positive neurons increased following SNP infusion in BL, SAD, and BL+SAD groups, although the increase was smaller than in control group. The BL group showed a relatively higher reduction in pERK expression than the SAD group, and the pERK expression in the NTS was localized to the caudal portion of the nuclei in the BL and SAD groups. These results suggest that the vestibular receptors may play a key role in maintaining blood pressure following acute hypotension; thus, the vestibular system may contribute to compensate for orthostatic hypotension.

  • Objcetive : Neuropathic pain sometimes arises from a partial peripheral nerve injury. This kind of pain is usually accompanied by spontaneous burning pain, allodynia and hyperalgesia. It has been well known that acupuncture is effective to the pain control from ancient time in Asia. However, it is not clear whether acupuncture can control neuropathic pain. The aim of the present study is to examine if acupuncture stimulation may be effective to the mechanical allodynia in a rat model of neuropathic pain. Methods : To produce neuropathic pain, under sodium pentobarbital anesthesia, the right superior caudal trunk was resected between the S3 and S4 spinal nerves. After the neuropathic surgery, we examined if the animals exhibited the behavioral signs of mechanical allodynia. The mechanical allodynia was assessed by stimulating the tail with von Frey hair (bending force : 2.0g). three or 6 weeks after the neuropathic surgery, acupuncture stimulation was delivered to Houxi (SI 3) as the following parameters (2HZ frequency, 0.07mA intensity and 3msec duration) for 30 minutes. Results : The stimulation of Houxi (SI 3) acupoint relieved the behavioral signs of mechanical allodynia. Conclusion : Our results suggest that acupuncture can control the mechanical allodynia of neuropathic pain.

  • In the southern sea of Korea, the culturing Rock bream, Oplegnathus fasciatus, ranging from 16.3 to 20.1cm in body length were sampled to examine how serious parasitic infection is. As a result, they were infected with 10 to 31 individuals of Monogenea, Benedenia sp. The parasitic sites of fish body was trunk (81.8%), caudal peduncle (16.5%) and the other portion (1.6%), and where ulceration and bleeding were observed with a large amount of muscus. When the treatment with formalin and freshwater were performed to get rid of the parasite, they were exterminated after 8 and 20 minutes in 100% and 70% freshwater, respectively and were killed after 10, 15 and 20 mimutes in the seawater added with formalin to be 250 ppm, 200 ppm and 150 ppm, 200 ppm and 150 ppm, respectively. During the treatment for parasite extermination, the fish showing a serious illness were dead in the 100% freshwater, whereas toxicity caused by formalin treatment was not detected in this study. The former is probably due to failure in the osmotic regulation of Rock bream.

  • The projection from the lateral reticular nucleus (LRN) to three subdivisions of the cerebellar vermal lobule VI was studied in the rat by utilizing the retrograde transport of wheatgerm agglutinin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase. Labelled neurons were located bilaterally throughout the LRN, but with ipsilateral predominance. There seemed to be a dorsal4o-ventral transition in the ipsilateral magnocellular neurons projecting to the cerebellar vermal lobules VIa-to-Vic. In the contralateral side, cells projecting to vermal lobule Via were observed at more rostral sections, whereas those projecting to lobule Vic were located at caudal sections. There were relatively few labelled neurons in parvocellular or subtrigeminal divisions at either side. Computer-aided three dimensional reconstruction of LRN projections to lobules Via/Vib or lobules Vib/Vic exhibited extensive oberlap within each combination of injection cases.

  • Two specimens (56.3~61.1 mm SL) of the serranid fish, Chelidoperca pleurospilus and 21 specimens (34.0~93.6 mm SL) of the pinguipedid fish, Parapercis muronis were collected around Jeju Island, southern Korea. C. pleurospilus is characterized by having five dark blotches along lateral line, truncated caudal fin, and scaleless interorbital space. P. muronis is characterized by having five oblique dark bands on body side, five spines on dorsal fin, and no notch between spinous and soft-rayed portions of dorsal fin. We describe these specimens as the first record from Korea, and propose the new Korean name, "Byeol-gak-si-dom" for the former and "Da-seosjul-yang-dong-mi-ri" for the latter.
