  • The flexography ink has disadvantage in a deinking process because it tends to form too fine particles in alkali condition to be removed in flotation deinking. The influence of pH conditions on the particle size of phthalocyanine cyan ink used for flexo-printing was investigated to see the effect of pH conditions on flexography ink dispersion. Flexography ink particles prepared by grinding dried ink films were used in this experiment. Greater reduction of the ink particle size was noticed under alkaline pH condition, which was attributed to dissolution of resin component of the ink. Adsorption behavior of flexography ink onto pigment particles was examined using clay and talc as substrate pigments. Pretreatment of inorganic pigments with a cationic poly-DADMAC increased the surface adsorption of flexography ink particles, which improved the removal of the inks by centrifugal sedimentation of inorganic pigments. Most efficient removal of the ink particles was achieved when an optimal addition level of the cationic polymer was used for pretreatment of inorganic pigments, and this optimal addition level corresponds to the surface saturation point of the polyelectrolyte. Adsorption of flexography ink particles onto inorganic pigments improved the ink removal in flotation deinking since the pigment particles has the optimal particle size for flotation deinking.

  • The maximum drying shrinkage velocity was proposed to verify bulk and stiffness improvement mechanism during drying according to papermaking parameters. It was based on the wet-web shrinkage behavior without the restraint of wet-web during drying, so intact drying impact could be measured. Bulking agent reduced the drying shrinkage and the maximum drying shrinkage velocity, so paper bulk increased and paper strength decreased. When adding cationic starch to stock with the bulking agent for strengthening, the bulk was increased further with additional decreasing of the drying shrinkage and the maximum drying shrinkage velocity. Paper strength also increased except tensile stiffness index with decreasing the drying shrinkage and the maximum drying shrinkage velocity. When using additional strength additives for strengthening of fiber interfaces extended by bulking agent and cationic starch, amphoteric strength additive increased paper stiffness without loss of paper bulk. It was considered that the added amphoteric strength additives were cross-linked to the stretched cationic starch and this cross-linking increased elasticity of fiber-polymer-fiber interfaces without changing the drying behavior. Paper bulk could be increased with decreasing the maximum drying shrinkage velocity. The drying shrinkage of paper also could be controlled by fiber-to-fiber bonding interfaces by the bulking agent. In this case, paper strength including stiffness was decreased by reducing fiber-to-fiber bonding but it could be improved by strengthening fiber-to-fiber interfaces with polymer complex without loss of bulk.

  • We synthesized glycidyl azide monomer(GAM) as a monomer for polymerization of glycidy azide polymer(GAP) which is a promising energetic prepolymer for a plastic-bonded explosive. Using quantitative real-tim in-situ infrared(in-situ IR) spectroscopy, kinetic study on the cationic ring opening polymerization of GAM was carried out. The reaction rate was obtained from monitoring the change of ether C-O stretching band($1050cm^{-1}$) in series IR spectra. The reaction was in accordance with the first-order reaction law for each of reaction temperature at 100/1 mole ratio of [GAM]/[$BF_3*etherate$]. In the ring opening polymerization of GAM, with ratio of [GAM]/[$BF_3*etherate$] to equal 100/1 at various temperature, the activation parameters obtained from the evaluation of kinetic data were ${\Delta}H^*$=14.34kcal/mol, ${\Delta}S^*=-12.31cal/mol{\cdot}K$ and $E_a$=14.89kcal/mol.

  • Polyalphaolefin (PAO) is a synthetic lubricant that is superior to mineral-based lubricants in the terms of physical and chemical characteristics such as low pour point, high viscosity index (VI), and thermal and oxidation stability. Several kinds of PAOs have been synthesized by using 1-pentene, 1-hexene, 1-octene, or 1-dodecene as monomer with three kinds of aluminum-based Lewis acid catalysts via cationic polymerization. The control of the catalytic performance and physical properties of PAO such like molecular weight, kinematic viscosity, pour point, and viscosity index was done by changing polymerization parameters. The alkyl aluminum halide-based catalysts show better catalytic activity than that of the conventional $AlCl_3$ catalyst. The microstructure of PAO was investigated by means of TOF-MS (time of flightmass spectroscopy) analysis in order to elucidate the correlation between the performances of the lubricant (VI, pour point) and the molecular structure of PAO. The VI of PAO increases with increases in the carbon number of ${\alpha}$-olefin. In other words, the performances of PAO as a lubricant strongly depended on the branch length of PAO.

  • A cationic lipid emulsion containing 1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium-propane(DOTAP), Tween80, squalene has been prepared as a gene delivery system. In order to increase the transfection efficiency of gene carrier, folate was used as the tumor-targeting ligand that was attached on PEG-DPPE. HeLa and 293 cells were used for the in vitro transfection experiment. HeLa cell is a folate-positive cell line. The mean particle sizes of polymeric lipid system and DNA/lipid complex system were 206.6 nm and 150.5 nm, respectively. The transfection efficiencies of our carriers(4:l(w:w) complex ratio)were 100 times higher than that of DOTAP only emulsion due to the targeting effect of folate.

  • Laboratory experiments using metal coagulants[alum, PAC(Poly Aluminum Chloride)] and polymer were conducted in this study to enhance dewatering and settling characteristics for swine wastewater. In this study, application of mixture of metal coagulants and polymer improved settling and dewatering characteristics for swine wastewater compared to using only metal coagulants. Also sludge volume was decreased when the mixture was applied. About 80-90% of settling velocity was increased and thickening ratio was increased as much as two times when adding 100mg/L of cationic polymers. Polymer was excellent for enhancing dewatering property among coagulants.

  • A characterization of the permeation and separation using single salt solution was carried out with charged composite membranes. Various charged composite membranes were fabricated by blending an ionic polymer with a nonionic polymer in different ratios. In this study, sodium alginate, chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) were employed as anionic, cationic and nonionic polymers, respectively. The permeation and separation behaviors of the aqueous salt solutions have been investigated through the charged composite membranes with various charge densities. As the content of the ionic polymer increased in the membrane, the hydrophilicity of the membrane increased, and pure water flux and the solution flux increased correspondingly, indicating that the permeation performance through the membrane is determined mainly by its hydrophilicity. Electrostatic interaction between the charged membrane and ionic solute molecules, that is, Donnan exclusion, was observed to be attributed to salt rejection to a greater extent, and molecular sieve mechanism was effective for the separation of salts under a similar electrostatic circumstance of solutes.

  • The electrospinning process is a fascinating method to fabricate small nanosized fibers of diameter several hundred nanometers. Surfactant-polymer solutions were prepared by adding poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) to distilled water with cationic, anionic, amphoteric, and non-ionic surfactants. Average diameter of the electrospun PVOH fibers prepared from PVOH solution was over 300 nm, and was decreased to 150 nm for the mixture of PVOH/amphoteric surfactant. To explain the formation of ultra fine fiber, the characteristic properties in a mixture of PVOH/surfactant such as surface tension, viscosity, and conductivity were determined. In this paper, the effect of interactions between polymers with different classes of surfactants on the morphological and mechanical properties of electrospun PVOH nonwoven mats was broadly investigated.
