Corrosion Rate of Buried Pipeline by Alternating Current

  • An alternating current (AC) corrosion on buried pipeline has been studied using coupon and ER probe. Coupons and ER probes were applied to the sites from high value of AC voltage to low value based on the survey of AC voltages on buried gas transmission pipeline over the country. Parameters such as AC current density of coupon, AC voltage, cathodic protection potential, soil resistivity and frequency were monitored continually. Corrosion induced by AC was observed even under cathodically protected condition that met cathodic protection criterion (; below -850 mV vs. CSE). Corrosion rate was affected mainly not by AC voltage but by both of frequency and AC current density. An experimental corrosion rate relation could be obtained according to effective AC current density, in which AC corrosion rate increased linearly with effective AC current density, and its slope was 0.619 in coupon method and 0.885 in ER probes.

  • This study has been conducted to monitor the corrosion rate of cathodically protected structure and corrosion inhibited system using multi-line thin-film electrical resistance (TFER) sensor in various environments. The field test data of TFER sensor for the corrosion monitoring of cathodically protected underground pipeline in soil environments and of corrosion inhibited gas heaters were also presented. The sensor was found to be a powerful method to commit the sensitive pick-up of small corrosion rate which can be observed in the cathodically protected and corrosion inhibited systems.

  • When an underground pipeline runs parallel with DC traction systems, it suffers from DC traction interference. Because the train is fed by the substation through the overhead wire and return current back to the substation via the rails. If these return rails are poorly insulated from earth, DC current leak into the earth and can be picked up by nearby pipeline. It may bring about large-scale accidents even in cathodically protected systems. In this paper we analyze the cathodic protection systems of buried pipelines and DC traction stray current influence on it using the simulation software CatPro. We can discuss the problems and mitigation of DC traction interference for protected pipeline.

  • An alternating current (AC) corrosion using coupon has been studied. Coupons were applied in terms of AC voltage from high value to low value through the survey of AC voltages on buried gas transmission pipeline over the country. Parameters such as AC current density of coupon, AC voltage, cathodic protection potential, soil resistivity and frequency were monitored continually.   • When an underground pipeline runs parallel with DC-powered railways, it suffers from electrolytic corrosion caused by the stray current leaked from the railway negative returns. Perforation due to the electrolytic corrosion may bring about large-scale accidents even cathodically protected systems. Traditionally, bonding methods such as direct drainage, polarized drainage and forced drainage have been used in order to mitigate the damage on pipelines. In particular, the forced drainage method is widely adopted in Seoul. In this paper, we report the analysis of the stray current conditions in Seoul subway DC electrification system.

  • 천연가스 공급용 고압 지하 매설배관에 교류가 유도될 때 쿠폰과 전기저항형 박막센서를 이용하여 교류에 의한 부식속도를 평가하고 주요한 인자를 규명하고자 하였다. 전국에 걸쳐 조사된 교류전압 측정결과를 바탕으로 쿠폰과 전기저항형 박막센서를 설치하고, 주요인자를 고찰하기 위하여 다양한 인자들 (교류전압, 교류전류, 토양 비저항, 주파수, 방식전위)을 정기적으로 기록하였다. 황산동 전극기준 -850mV의 방식전위를 충분히 만족하는 상황에서도 교류에 의한 부식이 진행하였으며, 교류에 의한 부식속도는 교류전압과는 관계없이 교류전류밀도와 주파수에 의존하는 것으로 나타났다. 교류에 의한 부식속도는 유효교류전류밀도에 따라 직선적으로 증가하였으며, 쿠폰에 의한 평가결과 직선의 기울기는 0.619, 전기저항형 센서에 의한 직선의 기울기는 0.885로 나타났다.

  • When an underground pipeline runs parallel with subway DC electrification system, it suffers from stray current corrosion caused by the stray current from the rails negative returns. Perforation due to the stray current corrosion may bring about disastrous accidents such even in cathodically protected systems. Traditionally, bonding methods such as direct drainage, polarized drainage and forced drainage have been used in order to mitigate the damage on pipelines. In particular, the forced drainage method is widely adopted in Busan. In this paper, we report the real-time measurement data of the pipe-to-soil potential variation in the presence and absence of the IR compensation. The drainage current variation was also measured using the Stray Current Logger developed. By analyzing them, the problems of current countermeasures for stray current corrosion are discussed.
