Poly(4-vinylpyridine)-supported $Br{\phi}nsted$ acids (P4VP-HX) were prepared by wet impregnation technique. These supported acids were found as efficient heterogeneous green catalysts for acetylation of alcohol, amine and phenol with different catalytic activities. The wide application of P4VP-HX as reusable solid acid catalyst in organic reactions is possible because of its simple preparation and handling, stability, simple work up procedure.

Characteristics of $ZrO_2$ felt supported Cu/Zn catalysts have been investigated for the production of hydrogen via methanol steam reforming. Cu and Zn in different weight percent were loaded using wet impregnation over $ZrO_2$ felt support. The catalysts were characterized with BET and FE-SEM. The performance of these synthesized catalysts were investigated at SCR=1.5, $GHSV=2000h^{-1}$, temperature=$300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$, and pressure=2.5~19.5 barA. The results showed that the $Cu^{32.5}Zn^{7.5}ZrO_2$ catalyst was most active in terms of methanol conversion and hydrogen production. The methanol conversion in steam reforming of methanol was 84.6% at 19.5 barA and furnace $400^{\circ}C$ over $Cu^{32.5}Zn^{7.5}ZrO_2$ catalyst. The catalysts prepared using $ZrO_2$ felt show higher reactor temperature than the pellet type catalyst at same furnace temperature.

The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by $NH_3$ is well known as one of the most convenient, efficient, and economical method to prevent NOx emission in flue gas from stationary sources. The degradation of the reactivity is the obstacle for its real application, since high concentrations of sulfur dioxide and thermal factor would deactivate the catalyst. It is necessary to develop high stability of catalysts for low-temperature SCR. Among the transition metal oxides, $WO_3$ is known to exhibit high SCR activity and good thermal stability. The $MnOx-WO_3-TiO_2$ catalysts prepared by sol-gel method with various $WO_3$ contents were investigated for low-temperature SCR. These catalysts were observed in terms of micro-structure and spectroscopy analyses. The $WO_3$ catalyst as a promoter is used to enhance the thermal stability of catalyst since it increases the phase transition temperature of $TiO_2$ support. It was found that the addition of tungsten oxides not only maintained the temperature window of NO conversion but also increased the acid sites of catalyst.
The Pt-Ru/Carbon as an anode catalyst supported on the commercial activated carbon (AC) having high surface area and micropore was characterized for application of Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC). The Pt-Ru/AC anode catalyst used in this experiment showed the performance of $600\;mA/cm^2$ current density at 0.3 V. The borohydride reduction process using $NaBH_4$, denoted as a process A, showed much higher current and power densities than process B prepared by changing the reduction and washing process of process A. The particle sizes are strongly affected by the reduction process than the specific surface area of raw active carbon and the sizes are almost constant when the specific surface area of carbon are over than the $1200\;m^2/g$. Smaller particle size of catalyst and more narrow intercrystalite distance increased the performance of DMFC.
Optimal preparation guidelines of a cathode catalyst layer by non-precious metal catalysts were evaluated based on electrochemical performance in single-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Experiments for catalyst loading rate revealed that iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc) can be a promising alternative, comparable to platinum (Pt) and cobalt tetramethoxyphenylporphyrin (CoTMPP), including effects of substrate concentration. Results showed that using an optimal FePc loading of $1mg/cm^2$ was equivalent to a Pt loading of $0.35mg/cm^2$ on the basis of maximum power density. Given higher loading rates or substrate concentrations, FePc proved to be a better alternative for Pt than CoTMPP. Under the optimal loading rate, it was further revealed that 40 wt% of FePc to carbon support allowed for the best power generation. These results suggest that proper control of the non-precious metal catalyst layer and substrate concentration are highly interrelated, and reveal how those combinations promote the economic power generation of single-chamber MFCs.
In order to improve polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) durability, the durability of membrane electrode assemblies (MEA), in which the electrochemical reactions actually occur, is one of the vital issues. Many articles have dealt with catalyst layer degradation of the durability-related factors on MEAs in relation to loss of catalyst surface area caused by agglomeration, dissolution, migration, formation of metal complexes and oxides, and/or instability of the carbon support. Degradation of catalyst layer during long-term operation includes cracking or delamination of the layer which result either from change in the catalyst microstructure or loss of electronic or ionic contact with the active surface, can result in apparent activity loss in the catalyst layer. Membrane degradation of the durability-related factors on MEAs can be caused by mechanical or thermal stress resulting in formation of pinholes and tears and/or by chemical attack of hydrogen peroxide radicals formed during the electrochemical reactions. All of these effects, the mechanical damage of membrane and degradation of catalyst layers are more facilitated by uneven stress or improper MEA fabrication process. In order to improve the PEMFC durability, therefore, it is most important to minimize the uneven stress or improper MEA fabrication process in the course of the fabrication of MEA. We analyzed the effects of the MEA fabrication condition on the PEMFC durability with MEA produced using CCM (catalyst coated membrane) method. This paper also investigated the effects of MEA fabrication condition on the PEMFC durability by adding additional treatment process, hot pressing and pressing, on the MEA produced using CCM method.
In this work, the feasibility of spent zeolite catalyst for reusing as a support was investigated in catalytic odor removal reaction. As a model reaction for odor removal, toluene was selected as a reactant. 10wt% Cu was impregnated on spent HZSM-5 catalyst and spent FCC catalyst. The catalytic activity of the spent HZSM-S was higher than that of spent FCC catalyst in toluene oxidation. This was due to the fact that the surface area of spent HZSM-S was higher than that of spent FCC catalyst. These results may suggest that spent HZSM-S can be reused as a cheap catalyst for toluene removal.
Chemical catalyst products are applied to various fields such as petrochemical process, air pollution prevention facility and automobile exhaust gas purifier. The domestic and overseas chemical catalyst market is increasing every year, and the amount of waste catalyst generated thereby is also increasing. Most of the used chemical catalyst products, such as desulfurized waste catalysts and automobile waste catalysts containing valuable metals are important recyclable resources from a substitute resource point of view. The recycling processes for recovering valuable metals have been commercialized through some urban mining companies, and SCR denitration catalysts have been recycled through some remanufacturing companies. In this paper, the amount of domestic production and recycling of major catalyst products have thus been investigated and analyzed so as to be used as basic data for establishing industrial support policy for recycling of used chemical catalyst products. Also tasks for promoting the recycling of used chemical catalyst products are suggested.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were grown on a Si wafer by using thermal chemical vapor deposition (t-CVD). We investigated the effect of the catalyst deposition rate on the types of CNTs grown on the substrate. In general, smaller islands of catalyst occur by agglomeration of a catalyst layer upon annealing as the catalyst layer becomes thinner, which results in the growth of CNTs with smaller diameters. For the same thickness of catalyst, a slower deposition rate will cause a more uniformly thin catalyst layer, which will be agglomerated during annealing, producing smaller catalyst islands. Thus, we can expect that the smaller-diameter CNTs will grow on the catalyst deposited with a lower rate even for the same thickness of catalyst. The 0.5-nm-thick Fe served as a catalyst, underneath which Al was coated as a catalyst support as well as a diffusion barrier on the Si substrate. The catalyst layers were. coated by using thermal evaporation. The deposition rates of the Al and Fe layers varied to be 90, 180 sec/nm and 70, 140 sec/nm, respectively. We prepared the four different combinations of the deposition rates of the AI and Fe layers. CNTs were synthesized for 10 min by flowing 60 sccm of Ar and 60 sccm of $H_2$ as a carrier gas and 20 sccm of $C_2H_2$ as a feedstock at 95 torr and $810^{\circ}C$. The substrates were subject to annealing for 20 sec for every case to form small catalyst islands prior to CNT growth. As-grown CNTs were characterized by using field emission scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis NIR spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The fast deposition of both the Al and Fe layers gave rise to the growth of thin multiwalled CNTs with the height of ${\sim}680\;{\mu}m$ for 10 min while the slow deposition caused the growth of ${\sim}800\;{\mu}m$ high SWCNTs. Several radial breathing mode (RBM) peaks in the Raman spectra were observed at the Raman shifts of $113.3{\sim}281.3\;cm^{-1}$, implying the presence of SWCNTs (or double-walled CNTs) with the tube diameters 2.07~0.83 nm. The Raman spectra of the as-grown SWCNTs showed very low G/D peak intensity ratios, indicating their low defect concentrations.
The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of an Ni-SA catalyst, which was prepared from nickel, kieselguhr, and alumina, for the hydrogenation of triglyceride in a bench-scale reactor. Ni-SA powders were prepared by precipitating nickel precursors on a silica and alumina support. The powder was reduced in a hydrogen flow, mixed with a saturated palm oil, and then cooled to prepare an Ni-SA catalyst tablet. The sizes of NiO crystals of a commercial Pricat catalyst and the Ni-SA catalyst prepared in this study were $35{\AA}$ and $38{\AA}$, respectively. The pore volume and pore size of the Ni-SA catalyst was much larger than the pore volume and pore size of the Pricat catalyst. In addition, the average particle size of the Ni-SA catalyst was much smaller than that of the Pricat catalyst. The triglyceride hydrogenation reaction was carried out in a semi-batch reactor using catalysts impregnated with oil and molded into tablets. It was found that the Ni-SA catalyst was superior to the commercial Pricat catalyst in triglyceride hydrogenation, which could be ascribed to the raw material and the products being less influenced by the diffusion resistance in the pores of the Ni-SA catalyst. The Ni-SA catalyst prepared in this study has the potential to replace the Pricat catalyst as a catalyst for use in the commercial process for hydrogenation of triglyceride.
