  • CFD simulation is widely used in various industries, universities and research centers. In Korea most of the researchers use foreign commercial S/W packages especially in industries. But commercial CFD packages have some problems as limit to source code and very high license foe. So from several years ago open source CFD code has been widely spread as an alternative. But in Korea there are a few users of open source code. Insufficiency of performance validation as for accuracy, robustness, convenience and parallel speed-up is important obstacles of open source code. So we tested some validation cases as to incompressible external aerodynamics and internal flaws and now are doing compressible flaws. As the first stage of compressible flow validation, we simulated Korea next generation high speed train(HEMU). It's running condition is 400km/hr and maximum Mach number reaches up to 0.4. With the high speed train we tested accuracy, robustness and parallel performance of open source CFD code OpenFOAM Because there isn't experimental data we compared results with widely used commercial code. When use $1^{st}$ order upwind scheme aerodynamic forces are very similar to commercial code. But using $2^{nd}$ order upwind scheme there was some discrepancy. The reason of the difference is not clear yet. Mesh manipulation, domain decomposition, post-processing and robustness are satisfactory. Paralle lperformance is similar to commercial code.

  • In this study, a simple diagnostic statistic for determining the size of random forest is proposed. This method is based on MV (margin of victory), a scaled difference in the votes at the infinite forest between the first and second most popular categories of the current random forest. We can note that if MV is negative then there is discrepancy between the current and infinite forests. More precisely, our method is based on the proportion of cases that -MV is greater than a fixed small positive number (say, 0.03). We derive an appropriate diagnostic statistic for our method and then calculate the distribution of the statistic. A simulation study is performed to compare our method with a recently proposed diagnostic statistic.

  • This study presents a viscoelastic characterization of flexible pavement subjected to moving loads. A series of field tests have been conducted on three pavement sections (A2, A5, and A8) at the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) test road. The effect of vehicle speed on the responses of each test section was investigated at three speeds: 25km/hr, 50km/hr, and 80km/hr. During the test, both longitudinal and lateral strains were measured at the bottom of asphalt layers and in-situ measurements were compared with the results of finite element (FE) analyses. A commercial FE package was used to model each test section and a step loading approximation has been adopted to simulate the effect a moving vehicle. Field responses reveal the strain anisotropy (i.e., discrepancy between longitudinal and lateral strains) and the amplitude of strain normally decreases as the vehicle speed increases. In most cases, lateral strain was smaller than the longitudinal strain, and strain reduction was more significant in lateral direction.

  • At the finishing stage, the use of asymmetric elastics to treat mild skeletal and dental midline discrepancies often creates several side effects such as canted occlusal plane, tipped incisors and unesthetic results. This report presents the clinical cases with midline discrepancies, following a differential diagnosis, optimal mechanics, and considerations in treatment. Differential diagnosis and treatment mechanics with three-piece basal archwire can obtain predictable midline correction with minimal side effects.

  • Purpose: The proximal tibial sarcoma patients, especially in their growing ages have problems of reconstruction. This study is to devise a methodology which can circumvent this limitations. Materials and Methods: Four cases of proximal tibial osteosarcoma underwent hemiarthroplasty. The mean age was 13 years (11~15) with a mean follow-up of 64 months (47~89). The procedure consists of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) liner as an substitute for the joint surface and this piece was fixed to the remaining tibial bone stock with Ender nail and bone cement. Results: Final functional score was 23.5 (78.3% of control) by MSTS criteria. All the cases showed stable joint without pain. Hemiarthroplasty related complications were absent. By saving the femoral physis, expected leg length discrepancy could be minimized by this procedure. Conclusions: Hemiarthroplasty of proximal tibia can be an option in pediatric sarcoma patients.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a model for predicting long-term runoff in a basin using the ensemble streamflow prediction (ESP) technique and review its reliability. To achieve the objective, this study improved not only the ESP technique based on the ensemble scenario analysis of historical rainfall data but also conventional ESP techniques used in conjunction with qualitative climate forecasting information, and analyzed and assessed their improvement effects. The model was applied to the Geum River basin. To undertake runoff forecasting, this study tried three cases (case 1: Climate Outlook + ESP, case 2: ESP probability through monthly measured discharge, case 3: Season ESP probability of case 2) according to techniques used to calculate ESP probabilities. As a result, the mean absolute error of runoff forecasts for case 1 proposed by this study was calculated as 295.8 MCM. This suggests that case 1 showed higher reliability in runoff forecasting than case 2 (324 MCM) and case 3 (473.1 MCM). In a discrepancy-ratio accuracy analysis, the Climate Outlook + ESP technique displayed 50.0%. This suggests that runoff forecasting using the Climate Outlook +ESP technique with the lowest absolute error was more reliable than other two cases.

  • Advancement of imaging and surgical technique makes the internal hemipelvectomy one of the routine procedures of pelvis sarcoma. However, optimal reconstructive option for skeletal defect is still controversial. Pasteurized autogenous bone-total hip composite is a biologic method and its anatomical appropriateness gives good indication for selected cases. Nevertheless, in case of complication such as infection or mechanical breakage, removal of hardware including graft is inevitable. In those cases, marked limb length discrepancy induce marked functional deficit. To overcome this problem, the authors report 1 case, refining previous technique, saving the femoral head and reinsertion of osteoarticularly pasteurized host bone.

  • The vertical distributions of aerosol extinction coefficient were estimated using the scaling height retrieved at Gwangju, Korea ($35.23^{\circ}N$, $126.84^{\circ}E$) during a spring season (March to May) of 2009. The aerosol scaling heights were calculated on a basis of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) and the surface visibilities. During the observation period, the scaling heights varied between 3.55 km and 0.39 km. The retrieved vertical profiles of extinction coefficient from these scaling heights were compared with extinction profile derived from the Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) observation. The retrieve vertical profiles of aerosol extinction coefficient were categorized into three classes according to the values of AODs and the surface visibilities: (Case I) the AODs and the surface visibilities are measured as both high, (Case II) the AODs and the surface visibilities are both lower, and (Others) the others. The averaged scaling heights for the three cases were $3.09{\pm}0.46km$, $0.82{\pm}0.27km$, and $1.46{\pm}0.57km$, respectively. For Case I, differences between the vertical profile retrieved from the scaling height and the LIDAR observation was highest. Because aerosols in Case I are considered as dust-dominant, uplifted dust above planetary boundary layer (PBL) was influenced this discrepancy. However, for the Case II and other cases, the modelled vertical aerosol extinction profiles from the scaling heights are in good agreement with the results from the LIDAR observation. Although limitation in the current modelling of vertical structure of aerosols exists for aerosol layers above PBL, the results are promising to assess aerosol profile without high-cost instruments.

  • Bimaxillary Protrusion can be treated effectively in growing patients and in adults with conventional orthodontic therapy. However, In the adult patient, combined surgical and orthodontic treatment modalities may offer distinct advantages over such conventional therapy. In those cases complicate by vertical jaw dysplasia, sagittal dysplasia, or transverse skeletal discrepancy in addition to bimaxillary protrusion, the possibilities of obtaining successful results through orthodontic treatment alone greatly diminish. Surgical retraction of both maxillary and mandibular anterior segments with subapical osteotomies and ostectomies in the extraction site may be a good treatment alternative. Treatment time and possible adverse effects of lengthy orthodontic therapy may be reduced and optimum esthetic improvement may be facilitated. On the following cases, patient who had bimaxillary protrusion with Angle class III malocclusion was treated with combined orthodontic - surgical therapy by anterior subapical segmental osteotomies.

  • Rain-rate retrieval using the NOAA/AMSU (Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit) (Zaho et al., 2001) has been implemented at METRI/KMA since 2001. Here, we present the results of the AMSU derived rain-rate and validation result, especially for the rainfall associated with the tropical cyclone for 2001. For the validation, we use rain-rate derived from the ground based radar and/or rainfall observation from the rain gauge in Korea. We estimate the bias score, threat score, bias, RMSE and correlation coefficient for total of 16 tropical cyclone cases. Bias score shows around 1.3 and it increases with the increasing threshold value of rain-rate, while the threat score extends from 0.4 to 0.6 with the increasing threshold value of precipitation. The averaged rain-rate for at all 16 cases is 3.96mm/hr and 1.41mm/hr for the retrieved from AMSU and the ground observation, respectively. On the other hand, AMSU rain-rate shows a much better agreement with the ground based observation over inner part of tropical cyclone than over the outer part (Correlation coefficient for convective region is about 0.7, while it is only about 0.3 over the stratiform region). The larger discrepancy of tile correlation coefficient with the different part of the tropical cyclone is partly due to the time difference in between ice water path and surface rainfall. This results indicates that it might be better to develop the algorithm for different rain classes such as convective and stratiform.
