  • Diagnosis and prevention of cytogenetics diseases are one of the most important parts in prenatal care. For that reason, it is necessary to examine birth defects. However, there is no reliable statistical data about birth defects in our country. In this study, the ratio of birth defects were determined by cytogenetics analysis and amniocentesis, in addition, the usefulness of amniocentesis was analyzed. The screening test and the triple marker test were conducted for 3,325 pregnant women of between 15 and 22 weeks gestation. Amniocentesis was performed for 170 pregnant women who were positive in the two tests, 184 women of advanced maternal age and 48 women with family history of chromosome aberrations. Among 419 women, 8 pregnant women who were positive in the triple marker test, 1 woman who close to the cut-off value in the triple marker test, 2 women with advanced maternal age and 1 woman who has history of chromosome aberration pregnance that was positive in cytogenetics analysis. The overall incidence of chromosomal aberration was 12 cases including 7 cases of Down's syndrome, 1 case of Patau syndrome, 1 case of Klinefelter syndrome, 1 case of Edward syndrome, 1 case of Robertsonian translocation and 1 case of XYY syndrome. These results show that amniocentesis for pregnant women who need chromosome test in prenatal cytogenetics analysis is very useful.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between nominal markers and scrambling in Korean by providing proper LP constraints based on Cho &Chai (2000) anc Cho & Choe(2001). In doing so, we introduce a new type marker which includes case, postpositions and delimiters and propose the Adjunct LP Constraint and the Argument LP Constraint. Our LP constraints presents a solution to the problems of the previous analyses such as Kuno's (1980) Crossing-Over Constraint. The newly postulated type marker enables us to account for the scrambling possibilities of the NPs containing cases as well as postpositions and delimiters.

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the sentence comprehension strategies used by Korean/English bilingual children when they listened to sentences of their first language, i.e., Korean. The framework of competition model was employed to analyze the influence of the second language, i.e., English, during comprehension of Korean sentences. The participants included 10 bilingual children (ages 7;4-13;0) and 20 Korean-speaking monolingual children(ages 5;7-6;10) with similar levels of development in Korean language as bilingual children. In an act-out procedure, the children were asked to determine the agent in sentences composed of two nouns and a verb with varying conditions of three cues (case-marker, animacy, and word-order). The results revealed that both groups of children used the case marker cues as the strongest cue among the three. The bilingual children relied on case-marker cues even more than the monolingual children. However, the bilingual children used animacy cues significantly less than the monolingual children. There were no significant differences between the groups in the use of word-order cues. The bilingual children appeared less effective in utilizing animacy cues in Korean sentence comprehension due to the backward transfer from English where the cue strength of animacy is very weak. The influence of the second language on the development of the first language in bilingual children was discussed.

  • As smartphones came into wide use recently, it has become increasingly popular not only among young people, but middle-aged people as well. Most smartphones use capacitive full touch screen, so touch commands are made by fingers unlike the PDAs in the past that use touch pens. In this case, a significant portion of the smartphone's screen is blocked by the finger so it is impossible to see the screens around the finger touching the screen, and difficulty occurs in precise control used for small buttons such as qwerty keyboard. To solve this problem, this research proposes a method of using simple AR markers to improve the interface of smartphones. Sticker-form marker is attached to fingernails and placed in front of the smartphone camera Then, the camera image of the marker is analyzed to determine the orientation of the marker to perceive as onRelease() or onPress() of the mouse depending on the marker's angle of rotation, and use its position as the position of the mouse cursor. This method can enable click, double-click, drag-and-drop used in PCs as well as touch, slide, long-touch-input in smartphones. Through this research, smartphone inputs can be made more precise and simple, and show the possibility of the application of a new concept of smartphone interface.

  • This study was performed to assume the Sematic role of the obligatory argument of the predicate in a Korean sentence, and to accomplish the task to attach the assumed thematic role to the real corpus. With this study, the maximum of the Sematic role was determined and the Criterion of the Sematic role was set. The maximum of the Sematic role was determined 22. This study arranged the Sematic role of case marker and attached the Sematic role to the predicate of the sentence within The standard Korean Dictionary. The program to attach the thematic role was developed(UTagger-SR). The Sematic role of case marker and Case frame dictionary was equipped in this program. By attaching the Sematic role, it was found that the most important the Sematic role in the korean sentence is the theme of the predicate and the next is the subject of the predicate.

  • Purpose: Anxiety and depression are the concepts that commonly used as an emotional approach in the nursing researches and most of researches have been used questionnaires as a marker of anxiety and depression. There were few researches using physiological markers in measuring anxiety and depression. Methods: Journals published between 1950 and 2007 that include depression and anxiety measuring through physiological markers were reviewed. Results: As in the case of the hypothlamus-pituitary-adrenal axis system, it appeared that cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine belonged to the category of hormones which were responsive to anxiety and depression. Plasma norepinephrine was a marker of the anxiety whereas plasma cortisol was a marker of the depression. The anxiety and depression were correlated with immune and taste, but it considered as an outcome variable not a physiological marker. Conclusion: Catecholamine and cortisol reflect anxiety and depression state. Our findings suggest that further researches are needed to distinguish between markers and outcomes of depression and anxiety using physiological markers.

  • In this paper, we present a marker detection and recognition method from camera image for a disabled person to interact with a server system which can control appliance of surrounding environment. It converts the camera image to a binary image by using multi-threshold and extracts contours of objects in the binary image. After that, it approximates the contours to a list of line segments. It finds rectangular markers by using geometrical features which are extracted from the approximated line segments. It normalizes the shape of extracted markers into exact squares by using the warping technique. It extracts feature vectors from marker image by using principal component analysis and then recognizes the marker. The proposed marker recognition system is robust for light change by using multi-threshold. Also, it is robust for angular variation of camera by using warping technique and principal component analysis. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves 100% recognition rate at maximum for 21 markers and execution speed of 12 frames/sec.

  • Objectives The objective and universal grading system for the facial nerve palsy is needed to the objectification of treatment in Oriental medicine. In this study, the facial nerve palsy grading was developed with combination of image processing technique and Nottingham scale. Methods The developed system is composed of measurement part, image processing part, facial nerve palsy evaluation part, and display part. With the video data recorded by webcam at measurement part, the positions of marker were measured at image processing part. In evaluation part, Nottingham scales were calculated in four different facial expressions with measured marker position. The video of facial movement, time history of marker position, and Nottingham scale were displayed in display part. Results & Conclusion The developed system was applied to a normal subject and a abnormal subject with facial nerve palsy. The left-right difference of Nottingham scores was large in the abnormal compared with the normal. In normal case, the change of the length between supraorbital point and infraorbital point was larger than that of the length between lateral canthus and angle of mouth. The abnormal case showed an opposite result. The developed system showed the possibilities of the objective and universal grading system for the facial nerve palsy.
