Ten Tips for Performing Your First Peer Review: The Next Step for the Aspiring Academic Plastic Surgeon

  • Performing the first peer review of a plastic surgical research article can be an overwhelming task. However, it is an essential scholarly skill and peer review is used in a multitude of settings: evaluation of journal articles, conference abstracts, and research proposals. Furthermore, peer reviewing provides more than just the opportunity to read and help improve other's work: peer reviewing can improve your own scientific writing. A structured approach is possible and recommended. In these ten tips, we provide guidance on how to successfully conduct the first peer reviews. The ten tips on peer reviewing concern: 1) Appropriateness: are you qualified and prepared to perform the peer review? 2) Familiarization with the journal and its reviewing guidelines; 3) Gathering first impressions of the paper followed by specific tips for reviewing; 4) the abstract and introduction; 5) Materials, methods, and results (including statistical considerations); and 6) discussion, conclusion, and references. Tip 7 concerns writing and structuring the review; Tips 7 and 8 describe how to provide constructive criticism and understanding the limits of your expertise. Finally, Tip 10 details why-and how-you become a peer reviewer. Peer review can be done by any plastic surgeon, not just those interested in an academic career. These ten tips provide useful insights for both the aspiring and the experienced peer reviewer. In conclusion, a systematic approach to peer reviewing is possible and recommended, and can help you getting started to provide quality peer reviews that contribute to moving the field of plastic surgery forward.

Radiography Work Performed by Dental Hygienists according to the Workplace Type

  • Background: Dental hygienists study dental radiology through the dental hygiene department and curriculum, and most of the radiography work in dental clinics is performed by dental hygienists; however, the legal work regulations for dental hygienists place restrictions on the type of radiography performed. This study aimed to identify the actual conditions of the radiographic work performed by dental hygienists and to determine the difference according to the type of hospital. Methods: This study included 195 dental hygienists working at dental medical institutions in the metropolitan area. A survey was conducted on regarding the radiographic work performed and the clinical career of the main performers. The radiography work was divided into periapical radiography, bite-wing radiography, occlusal radiography, panoramic radiography, computed tomography (CT), and cephalometric radiography. Results: The frequency of performing intraoral radiography was as follows: periapical radiography, 94.9%; bite-wing radiography, 93.8%; and occlusal radiography, 77.9%. The frequency of performing extraoral radiography was 94.4% for panoramic radiography, 89.7% for CT, and 73.3% for cephalometric radiography. The frequency of internal and external radiography performance was higher among hygienists in dental clinics than among those in dental hospitals and university hospitals. The analysis of the dental hygienists' clinical experience in the areas of intraoral and extraoral radiography showed that those working at university hospitals, dental hospitals, and dental clinics had over 5 years, 2~4 years, and 1 year of clinical experience, respectively. The hygienists with less than 1 year of clinical experience showed high performance frequency (p<0.05). Conclusion: For the dental hygienists to perform radiography safely, a discussion regarding the revision of related laws and regulations is warranted.

북한이탈주민의 직업문화충돌과 직업적응에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Vocational Culture Conflicts and Vocational Adaptation of North Korean Defectors)

  • 이 연구는 북한이탈주민이 탈북 후 우리나라에 입국하여 정착하는 과정에서 어떠한 경로로 직업문화충돌을 인식하고 극복하는지, 자신의 진로와 직업생활에 적응하는 형태 등을 분석하였다. 이 연구는 질적연구 중 사례연구방법으로 북한과 우리나라에서 직업경험이 있는 북한이탈주민으로 입국한 지 5년이 경과되고, 직업을 가진 13명을 선정하였다. 면담은 총 5개월(2017. 8.~12.)에 걸쳐 진행하였으며, 반구조화 질문지로 1인당 60~120분에 걸쳐 면담진행 및 녹취, 전사 후 주제를 분석하였다. 주제 분석 결과, 북한에서의 직업환경과 개인의 진로배경, 새로운 삶을 통한 성공요인, 취업을 향해 꾸준히 노력하는 자세, 남한생활 적응의 어려움, 직업안정성을 추구하거나 남한의 문화를 수용하고 진로타협을 표출하였다. 이 연구의 결과, 첫째, 북한과 남한에서 직업을 선택하는 과정이 의존적에서 자율성으로 전환된 환경으로 직업선택 과정에서의 어려움을 겪는다. 둘째, 북한에서 축적된 진로자본을 남한에서 직업시장 진입 시 활용할 수 없고, 의사소통의 어려움, 편견이나 직업정보 부재 등의 애로점을 토로하였다. 셋째, 북한이탈주민의 직업문화충돌에 대한 주요 문제는 이질적 문화에 대한 적응력 부족, 스트레스, 경제력의 소진 등이며, 대처하는 방법은 배타성, 문화학습의 통합과정을 거친다. 넷째, 북한이탈주민은 직업적응에서 잦은 이직과 진로자본의 지속된 확장의 적응 등 부적응을 보였다. 다섯째, 북한이탈주민은 직업문화충돌을 개인별 특성에 따라 극복하고 적응하려고 하였다.

교육행정공무원의 직무만족과 스트레스 요인에 관한 연구 (A Study related to Professional Satisfaction and Stress Factors of the Administrative Education Government Officials)

  • 본 연구는 교육행정직 공무원이 단위학교의 행정을 수행하면서 겪고 있는 일상적 스트레스, 직무스트레스, 직무만족도에 관한 요인을 분석함을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 2013년 3월 10일부터 3월 30일까지 충북 청주시 청원군 소재 교육행정직 공무원 122명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 자료 분석은 SPSS Win 18.0 프로그램을 사용하여 t-test, 빈도분석과 신뢰도분석 방법으로 실시하였고, 실증분석은 유의수준 5%에서 검증하였다. 분석 결과, 인구통계학적 특성에 따른 직무만족도에 있어서 직급에 따른 직무만족도 차이는 유의미하나 성별, 연령, 종교, 교육 정도, 결혼 상태, 학교 급, 학교 규모, 경력, 음주, 흡연, 종교에 따른 차이는 유의수준 5%에서 유의미하지 않은 것으로 분석되었다. 인구통계학적 특성에 따른 직무만족도 하위요인에 있어서는 인사관리, 인간관계, 업무능력 부문에서는 요인별 내용과 유의미하나 조직 분위기는 유의수준 5%에서 유의미하지 않은 것으로 분석되었다. 또한 인구통계학적 특성에 따른 직무 스트레스 하위요인에서 양적 역할고에 대한 스트레스는 연령과 학교 급, 직급, 경력, 흡연에 따른 차이가 유의미하였으며, 경력발달에서는 흡연에 따른 차이가 유의미하였고, 역할갈등 및 모호성에 대한 스트레스에서는 인구통계학적 특성에 따른 차이가 유의수준 5%에서 유의미하지 않은 것으로 분석되었다. 본 연구의 시사점으로는 교육행정공무원에 대한 사회 환경적 배려가 요구되며, 아울러 인사관리보다는 업무능력 개발과 인간관계, 조직의 분위기 순의 배려가 요구됨을 들 수 있다.

  • The purpose of this case study is to provide the basic knowledge and the rationale for establishing the professional personnel position of Landscape Architecture(LA) in local Government of Korea o the basis of the characteristics and adoption system of professional personnel organization in comparison with the cases of Japan, the United States of America, and Germany. I have analyzed the case of Chonju City, Chollabuk-Do, recruited professional personnel of LA by using informal career position, to justify the needs and the division of professional Landscaping works of the city and to figure out drawbacks of the current adoption system of professional personnel in South Korea. In have found the following results that 1) City Mayor in Korean local Governments do not have the proper authorizing rights of recruiting the special personnels for performing urban policy, which is under controls of the Official Appointment Regulations, 2) because of no official position status for specialist in the fields of LA, the Chonju City had been recruited them as Urban Planner status through an informal process, 3) the section of Park and Urban Forestry was established under the control of Department of Culture and multimedia Industry, 4) the fields of specialized works of LA are defined as the work of ecopolis design and planning, biotope networking, ecological bridge and ecological restorations, and 5) the professional positions for LA should be established in Official Appointment Regulation for the urgent needs of local Government sin South Korea.

  • National Competency Standards(NCS) is to systemize the competency that is necessary for performing duties in industrial fields and to utilize synthetically duty, vocational education training, and qualification at the national level. The purpose of this study is to analyze the process of NCS development and verification, which systemizes competency units and competency unit elements through the analysis of duty in pattern field. It is to cultivate competent people to be able to promote the development of pattern industry ultimately through being a complementary to educational circles and industry then to give them practical knowledge that is demanded in the field. Furthermore, it is to be utilized as a fundamental data for reforming the system of duty competency evaluation so as to manage personnel career systematically and to improve their competency. Focus Group Interview(FGI) was adapted as the method of this study, which was proceeded 3 times, and validity of the drawn result is verified through expert questionnaire survey. Research result, which is competency units, is 10 as follows; Fit trend analysis, Analysis of sample garment Specification sheet, Pattern making for sample garment, Pattern making for manufacturing garment, Creation of sewing specification, Instruction of manufacturing technique, Sample garment Inspection for quality control, Grading, Calculation of the required material quantities, Quality control.

간호사의 언어직무스트레스 (Verbal job stress experienced by Nurses.)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand verbal violence and stress experienced by nurses, to identify measures to reduce such stress, and to present basic information needed for performing their professional roles. The results of this study are as follows. First the types of verbal violence by doctors, nurses, patients and their caregivers included "they speak roughly" and "they speak in a commanding tone" when they were marked on the basis of 5 points. In other words, speaking roughly is highest in frequency. Second, the main harmers of verbal violence were doctors, nurses, and patients and their caregivers, and thus verbal violence by nurses was most frequent. Third, the emotional reactions of the nurses after verbal violence were "angry", "frustrated", and "depressed" in order. As a result of analysis of effects on the emotional reactions of nurses. Fourth, the job stress of the nurses after experience of verbal violence was show as "frequently struggling with friends", "frequently struggling with family members", and "frequently drinking" in order. Fifth, based on general characteristics, the emotional reactions and job stress of nurses after verbal violence were significant on age, acdemic years, and current workplace, and the job stress of nurses after verbal violence was significant on marriage, clinical career, department of working, and types of working. This study may be significant in that it suggests methods of intervention, safe job environment, and administrative institution to relieve the emotional reactions of nurses after verbal violence, to reduce their stress, and to support the emotional reactions of nurses experienced verbal violence.

대학생의 통제소재가 취업스트레스에 미치는 영향 (The Influence of University Students' Locus of Control on Stress towards Employment)

  • 글로벌경제의 경기침체 우려가 현실로 나타나면서 대졸자의 취업난이 그 어느 때보다도 심각한 상황이다. 이러한 현실 속에서 취업을 해야 하는 대학생들은 고민과 갈등으로 많은 스트레스에 시달리고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 과연 대학생들이 자신의 운명을 무엇이 통제한다고 믿는지에 기인된 내적 통제소재와 외적 통제소재에 따라 취업스트레스의 하위요인 환경적, 신체적, 심리적, 예민 행동에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 한다. 본 연구를 위한 설문조사는 2011. 10. 5.~10. 20까지 15일 동안 서울과 수도권 및 지방의 4년제 대학생을 대상으로 총 550부의 설문지를 배포하여 480부가 회수되었고 이 중 유효한 430명을 연구대상으로 하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 취업스트레스에서 환경적인 영향이 49%로 높게 나타나는 반면 신체적 영향은 7%로 나타났다. 둘째, 취업스트레스와 통제소재의 상관분석을 실시한 결과, 외적 통제소재는 환경과 신체, 심리, 예민 행동에서 정적인 영향을 보이고 있으며, 내적 통제소재에서는 모두 부적인 상관을 보이고 있어 보다 다양한 진로정보가 제공되어야 하겠다. 청년실업률과 직결되는 대학생들의 침체된 진로효능감을 높이고 취업스트레스를 감소시킬 수 있는 다양하고 적극적인 방안이 모색되어야 한다.

치과위생사의 수행업무에 대한 인식도 및 실태조사 (A study on the job awareness of dental hygienists and their job performance)

  • The job of dental hygienists is specialized, and they have to be capable of performing their primary duties including prevention of oral diseases, oral prophylaxis, and oral health education. To ensure their successful job performance, dentists should have an accurate understanding of their duties and need a change of mind-set about them. And there should be written legal and concrete regulations on the coverage of their work in order to let them boost their job performance with pride and a sense of responsibility. The purpose of this study was to examine the actual roles and job performance of dental hygienists in clinical field in an attempt to discuss the substantial job performance of dental hygienists and their job enlargement. It's basically meant to help enhance the efficiency and quality of medical services. The subjects in this study were 471 dental hygienists in dental clinics, dental hospitals, university hospitals and general hospitals across the nation, on whom a survey was conducted in person from March 2 to 25, 2005. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS Win 12.0 program, and the findings of the study were as follows: 1. The major jobs they currently performed included oral health education, hospital management, simple duties, extensive dental hygiene duties and joint treatment assistance. They hoped to continue to be responsible for oral health education, preventive treatment and extensive dental hygiene duties. 2. As for their current job by age, extensive dental hygiene duties, preventive treatment, joint treatment assistance, preserving treatment, prosthetic treatment and pediatric treatment were most conducted by the dental hygienists who were at the age of 26 to less than 31, and those who were at the age of 31 and up were most responsible for hospital management and simple duties. 3. As to job awareness by workplace, their workload was statistically significantly different according to their workplace. The hospital employees took care of more work than those in clinics. 4. Concerning job awareness by age, the younger dental hygienists suffered more role conflicts and were given a less free hand in work handling, the middle-aged group's job was uncertain. Legal regulations about the coverage of their work should be prepared in detail as a measure to stir up their responsible job performance and pride. In order to take advantage of experienced dental hygienists, their duties should be more differentiated and specialized, and their working conditions should be improved to boost their job satisfaction. That is, they should be given ample chances for promotion and serving as a middle manager and be given fair treatment according to their career. If their work is accurately darified and specialized based on career, it will boost the efficiency of dental treatment. Dental hygienists also should direct sustained efforts into self-development in order to become a skilled and professional oral health personnel.

부산, 경남 지역 보건계열 대학(교)의 전공학과별 전공만족도 비교 (Comparison of Satisfaction on Each Major Dept. of Health-Related Universities Located in Busan and Gyeongnam)

  • 본 연구는 각 대학(교)의 보건계열 학과인 방사선학과, 임상병리학과, 물리치료학과 학생들의 전공에 대한 만족도와 그와 관련된 요인들을 파악하여 전공학과만족에 대한 기초 지식을 제공하고 대학생활지도와 진로지도 연구에 기여하기 위하여 부산광역시와 경상남도 소재 3, 4년제 대학(교)의 보건계열 학과인 방사선학과 107명, 임상병리학과 97명, 물리치료학과 89명을 연구 대상으로 하여 조사를 실시한 결과, 전체 연구대상자의 전공 만족도는 $3.40{\pm}0.57$점이었으며, 방사선학과 $3.38{\pm}0.62$점, 임상병리학과 $3.37{\pm}0.56$점, 물리치료학과 $3.45{\pm}0.50$점으로 물리치료학과가 가장 높았다. 세부항목으로는 사회적위상이 가장 높았고 학과환경이 가장 낮았으며 4년제 보다 3년제의 만족도가 높았다. 학제와 사회적 위상, 학과적응이 전공만족도에 영향을 미쳤으며, 취업전망은 모든 학과의 전공만족도에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 나타났다. 따라서 각 학과에서는 일반 대학과 다른 특성화된 환경을 갖추고 첨단화된 실습 장비를 통해 실기능력과 개인 역량을 높여 학생 스스로 취업에 유리한 조건을 갖출 수 있도록 노력하게 하며, 특히 4년제 대학교 학생들의 전공만족도를 높일 수 있는 방안을 모색하고 취업지도, 취업정보제공과 더불어 산학 협력을 통해 각 학과의 사회적 위상을 더 높일 수 있는 방안을 마련하여 학생들이 학과에 대한 자부심을 가지게 하여 미래에 전 국민의 보건을 책임질 학생들이 전공학과에 만족하고 학업에 매진할 수 있도록 해야 할 것으로 생각된다.
