Time-resolved polarization and depolarization tracking on reaction pathway of calcium carbonates in a view of non-classical nucleation theory (비전통핵생성 이론 관점에서 탄산칼슘의 반응경로에 대한 시간분해 분극 및 탈분극 추적)

  • The formation characteristics of calcium carbonates are closely related to the durability and mechanical properties of cement-based materials. In this regard, a deep understanding of the reaction pathway of calcium carbonates is critical. Recently, non-classical nucleation theory was summarized and it was presumed that prenucleation clusters are present. The formation of the prenucleation cluster at undersaturated condition (≈ 0.1 ml) in the present study was investigated via electrical characteristics of an electrolytic solution. Calcium chloride dihydrate (CaCl2·2H2O) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) were used as starting materials to supply calcium and carbonate sources, respectively. Furthermore, the reaction pathway of calcium carbonates was investigated by time-resolved polarization and depolarization characteristics of the electrolytic solution. The time-resolved polarization and depolarization tests were conducted by switching polarity with an interval of 20 seconds for 1 hr and by measuring the variation of electrical resistance. It can be inferred from the results obtained in the present study that the reactive constituent for the formation of calcium carbonates was mostly consumed in the period possibly associated with the prenucleation and the reaction pathways may be governed by the monomer-addition mechanism.

Sampling and Analytical Method for Linear Carbonates using GC/FID (GC/FID를 이용한 사슬형 카보네이트 3종의 측정·분석방법)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop an air sampling and analytical method for estimating worker exposure to linear carbonate solvents and to evaluate the method. Methods: The target substances were three linear carbonates: DMC, DEC, EMC. GC/FID was used for sample analysis. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine desorption solvents and sample capacity, and to evaluate storage stability, accuracy, and precision. Results: Coconut Shell Charcoal (CSC, 100/50 mg) was used as the air sampling media, and a desorption solvent of 5% methanol/95% dichloromethane was selected. Recommended sampling capacities were 1~11 ℓ for DMC, 1~18 ℓ for DEC, and 1~24 ℓ for EMC. The stability of three linear carbonates was demonstrated over 30 days in a refrigerator (4℃). Detection limits were determined as follows: DMC 0.26 ㎍/sample, DEC 0.24 ㎍/sample, and EMC 0.25 ㎍/sample. The total coefficient of variation was calculated as DMC 0.064, DEC 0.079, and EMC 0.07. Conclusions: This sampling and analysis method is suitable for estimating personal exposure to linear carbonates in the workplace.

  • Novel conductive $CO_2$ membranes composed of dual phases, molten carbonates and electronic conducting ceramics, were investigated. As the microstructure control of electronic conducting ceramic supports is extremely important to keep the molten carbonates stable in the membranes by a capillary force applied by the pore structure of the supports, we have scrutinized the microstructure of the electronic conducting supports utilizing microscopic images and gas permeability measurement. From the evaluation of the electrical conductivities of the molten carbonates and the electronic conducting ceramic supports, we found that the ionic conductivity of the molten carbonates could determine $CO_2$ flux through the dual phase membranes if the surface exchange rate were relatively high enough.

  • Carbonation of $Mg(OH)_2$ at 300 ${^{\circ}C}$ was studied by Infrared spectroscopy. Dehydroxylation and carbonation reactions were carried out in consecutive manner via 2-step procedure. Unidentate carbonates were produced only on defective surface of MgO in situ generated by dehydroxylation of $Mg(OH)_2$$Mg(OH)_2$${^{\circ}C}$ was proposed.

Stable isotope and rare earth element geochemistry of the Baluti carbonates (Upper Triassic), Northern Iraq

  • Stable isotope ratios of $^{18}O/^{16}O$ and $^{13}C/^{12}C$ and rare earth elements geochemistry of the Upper Triassic carbonates from the Baluti Formation in Kurdistan Region of Northern Iraq were studied in two areas, Sararu and Sarki. The aim of the study is to quantify the possible diagenetic processes that postdated deposition and the paleoenvironment of the Baluti Formation. The replacement products of the skeletal grains by selective dissolution and neomorphism probably by meteoric water preserved the original marine isotopic signatures possibly due to the closed system. The petrographic study revealed the existence of foraminifers, echinoderms, gastropods, crinoids, nodosaria and ostracods as major framework constituents. The carbonates have micritic matrix with microsparite and sparry calcite filling the pores and voids. The range and average values for twelve carbonate rocks of ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}^{13}C$ in Sararu section were -5.3‰ to -3.16‰ (-4.12‰) and -2.94‰ to -0.96‰ (-1.75‰), respectively; while the corresponding values for the Sarki section were -3.69‰ to -0.39‰ (-2.08‰) and -5.34‰ to -2.70‰ (-4.02‰), respectively. The bivariate plot of ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}^{13}C$ suggests that most of these carbonates are warm-water skeletons and have meteoric cement. The average ${\Sigma}REE$ content and Eu-anomaly of the carbonates of Sararu sections were 44.26 ppm and 1.03, respectively, corresponding to 22.30 ppm and 0.93 for the Sarki section. The normalized patterns for the carbonate rocks exhibit: (1) non-seawater-like REE patterns, (2) positive Gd anomalies (average = 1.112 for Sararu and 1.114 for Sarki), (3) super chondritic Y/Ho ratio is 31.48 for Sararu and 31.73 for Sarki which are less than the value of seawater. The presence of sparry calcite cement, negative $^{13}C$ and $^{18}O$ isotope values, the positive Eu anomaly in the REE patterns (particularly for Sararu), eliminated Ce anomaly ($Ce/Ce^{\ast}$: 0.916-1.167, average = 0.994 and 0.950-1.010, average = 0.964, respectively), and Er/Nd values propose that these carbonates have undergone meteoric diagenesis. The REE patterns suggest that the terrigenous materials of the Baluti were derived from felsic to intermediate rocks.

Geochemical Characteristics of Devonian Bitumen Carbonates in Alberta, Canada (캐나다 데본기 비투멘 탄산염암의 지화학적 특성 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate inorganic characteristics of Devonian bitumen carbonates in Alberta using two drilling cores, Saleski 03-34-88-20w4 and Saleski 08-01-88-20w4, taken from the Core Research Center (CRC) of Canada. The bitumen carbonates are mainly composed of less than 0.2 mm dolomites and some carbonate includes small amount of quartz and calcite. The bitumen carbonates from two cores are interpreted to have formed in similar sedimentary environments and dolomitization processes. Carbonates from Saleski 03-34-88-20w4 core were formed under higher inflow of clastic sediment than those from Saleski 08-01-88-20w4 core. Range of crystallization temperature of dolomites in the both bitumen carbonate cores is about 40~$55^{\circ}C$. Dolomitizing fluid of the bitumen carbonates would be Devonian seawater. Bitumen carbonates from Cairn Formation, compared with the CRC cores, have experienced a similar crystallization temperature, but dolmititizing fluid of the bitumen carbonates from Cairn Formation have been modified from the isotopic exchange with continental crust.

Prediction of Long-Term Settlement of Sands Containing Carbonates (탄산염 성분이 포함된 사질토의 장기침하 예측)

  • This study was conducted to propose the model that is able to predict long-term settlement of sands containing carbonates. We can observe that in addition to the initial elastic compression, a considerable additional compression occurs with long-term period in some sands. The compressibility of sands is significantly dependent on particle characteristics. Some sands have many pores and particularly has an angular shape. To predict of long-term settlement of these sands which contain carbonates, first of all a variety of tests which are to assess chemical, physical and compression characteristics of these sands were conducted. Second, in order to know settlement with time, the time parameter was determined by analyzing the measured data obtained from $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ area. The measured settlement of this area shows that in addition to the initial elastic compression, a considerable additional compression occurring with time. It was caused by the crushing, shattering, and rearrangement of particles, which were real phenomena in sandy soils under loading condition. Based on this case study, we proposed that a simple method is able to predict settlement with time of sandy soil containing carbonates.

Slope Sedimentation and Organic Carbon Content in the Late Quaternary West Florida Slope Sediments

  • Slope sedimentation on the modern west Florida continental margin is controlled by pelagic carbonate accumulation and off-shelf sedimentation of neritic carbonates and terrigenous fines. Production and deposition of pelagic carbonates by planktonic foraminifera and coccoliths have played a significant role in the total slope sedimentation and are mainly promoted by sea-surface productivity. Organic carbon data reflect the relatively high biological productivity in surface waters, indicating high accumulation of biogenic calcareous sediments. The surface-water productivity in the study area is supported by the relation among microfossil assemblages, carbonate mineralogy and sedimentary organic carbon.

  • Efficient synthesis of ${\alpha}$-chloroenones bearing ${\beta}$-carbonates or ${\beta}$-carbamates was achieved by rhodium(II)-catalyzed reaction of cyclic diazodicarbonyl compounds with a variety of chloroformates or carbamyl chlorides in good yields. These reactions provided a useful and rapid route to ${\beta}$-substituted ${\alpha}$-haloenones.

  • The Upper Devonian Grossmont Formation in Alberta, Canada reserves an estimated 50 billion cubic meters of bitumen and possess about 1/6 of the total bitumen resources in northern Alberta. However, unlike the overlying Athabasca oil sands, non conventional bitumen resources has not been developed as yet. The carbonate rocks of Grosmont Formation have been subject to various stages of diagenesis, including dolomatization and karstification with a strong effect on the distribution of porosity and permeability, which resulted in highly heterogeneous reservoirs. An extensive fracture logging and mapping was performed on total of six boreholes located in the study area to explore the characteristics of fracture geometry system and the subsurface structures of carbonates reservoir that holds bitumen. Fractal dimension was used as a measure of the statistical homogeneity of the fractured rock masses. The applicability of random Cantor dust, Dc, as a fractal parameter was examined systematically. The statistical homogeneity of fractured carbonates rock masses was investigated in the study area. The structural domains of the rock masses were delineated depthwise according to estimated Dc. The major fracture orientation was dominated by horizontal beddings having dip of $0-20^{\circ}$. Also, fractures having high dip angles existed with relatively low frequency. Three dimensional fracture network modeling for each structural domain has been performed based on fracture orientation and intensity, and some representative conceptual models for carbonates reservoir in the study area has been proposed. The developed subsurface conceptual models will be used to capture the geomechanical characteristics of the carbonates reservoir.
