  • The potential of using a double-faced wall stagnation flow burner in mass production of carbon nanotubes was evaluated experimentally and computationally. With nitrogen-diluted premixed ethylene-air flames established on the Nickel-coated stainless steel double-faced wall, the propensities of carbon nanotube formation were experimentally determined using SEM and FE-TEM images and Raman spectroscopy, while the flame structure was computationally predicted using a 3-dimensional CFD code with a reduced reaction mechanism. The uniformity and yields of synthesized carbon nanotubes were evaluated in terms of the flame stretch rates. Results show substantial increase of area on the wall surface where uniform carbon nanotubes are synthesized with using the double-faced wall stagnation flow burner due to enhanced uniformity of temperature distribution along the wall surface and support the potential of using a double-faced wall stagnation flow burner in mass production of carbon nanotubes.

  • We present a coarse-graining model to describe the mechanical behaviors of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. To find the atomic configuration in membrane-like nanostructure i.e. carbon nanotube, we employ interpolation functions and the associated element-variables that are defined in the subdivided region. Tersoff-Brenner potential is adopted for interaction of bonded atoms and also van der Waals force for non-bonded interaction. Moreover, we simulate the coarse-graining multi-walled carbon nanotubes with defects and its result is compared with that of perfect multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

^x Carbon nanotubes were grown on SiO$_2$/Si substrates by applying $C_2$H$_2$ gas through chemical vapor deposition process. It was found that carbon nanotubes were grown successfully on the substrates with catalytic films under 20 $\AA$ total thickness. The increase in reaction temperature from 50$0^{\circ}C$ to 80$0^{\circ}C$ resulted in longer carbon nanotube, but there was no clear tendencies with different types of catalytic layers. It was evident that carbon nanotubes became more straight on the substrate with Ni catalytic film produced by ICBD method.

  • Electrochemical capacitors have been the most strong energy storage devices due to high power density and long cycle stability. Pristine carbon nanotubes are promising electrode materials for excellent electrical conductivity and high specific surface area in electrochemical capacitor. However, the practical application of pristine carbon nanotubes was limited by the aggregation into bundles due to van der Waals force. In this research, we explained how multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) functionalized by carboxyl, sulfonic, and amine groups (CNT-COOH, CNT-SO3H, CNT-NH2) to improve the performances of MWCNT. Functionalized CNTs showed two- to four-fold increase in capacitance over that of pristine CNTs, while maintaining reasonable cyclic stability. But, the CNT-COOH showed the lowest rate capability of 57% compared to 84%, 86% of CNT-SO3H and CNT-NH2. As demonstrated by the spectroscopic analysis, This reseach showed how surface functional group of carbon nanotubes change capacitor performances.

  • Carbon nanotubes are graphene sheets rolled up in cylinders with diameter as small as 1nm. Extensive work carried out in recent years has revealed the intriguing properties of this novel material. Exceptional property combined with low density of nanotubes makes them suitable for use as reinforcements in composites. Low volume of production and high cost is the main limitations towards their growth and application. Nanofibres bridge the gap between the conventional carbon fibre and the carbon nanotubes. With their low cost & comparatively higher volume of production along with their exceptional properties, the nanofibres are considered attractive material as nanoscale reinforcement. In this article a concise review of structure, property. production and application of carbon nanotubes and nanofibres have been discussed.

  • Synthesis of carbon nanotubes and nanofibers on a catalytic metal substrate, using an ethylene fueled inverse diffusion flame, was investigated. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes, with diameters of 20 - 60nm, were formed on the substrate coated with nickel-nitrate in the region of 5 - 6mm from the flame center along the radial direction. The gas temperature for this region was ranging from about 1400 to 900K. Nickel particles originated from the coated nickel-nitrate on the substrate were the major catalyst for the formation of the nanomaterials. HR-TEM and Raman spectrum revealed that synthesized carbon nanotubes had multi-walled structures with some defective graphite layers at walls.

  • Carbon nanotube reinforced alumina matrix nanocomposite was fabricated by sol-gel process and followed by spark plasma sintering process. Homogeneous distribution of carbon nanotubes within alumina matrix can be obtained by mixing the carbon nanotubes with alumina sol and followed by condensation into gel. The mixed gel, consisting of alumina and carbon nanotubes, was dried and calcinated into carbon nanotube/alumina composite powders. The composite powders were spark plasma sintered into carbon nanotube reinforced alumina matrix nanocomposite. The hardness of carbon nanotube reinforced alumina matrix nanocomposite was enhanced due to an enhanced load sharing of homogeneously distributed carbon nanotubes. At the same time, the fracture toughness of carbon nanotube reinforced alumina matrix nanocomposite was enhanced due to a bridging effect of carbon nanotubes during crack propagation.

  • The synthesis of Ni-catalyzed multi-walled carbon nanotubes and nanofibers on a catalytic metal substrate, using an ethylene fueled inverse diffusion flame as a heat source, was investigated. When the gas temperature was varied from 1,400K to 900K, approximately, carbon nanotubes with diameters of 20∼60nm were formed on the substrate. In the regions where the gas temperature was higher than 1,400K or lower than 900K, iron nanorods or carbon nanofibers were synthesized, respectively. Based on the quantitative analyses of large amount of SEM and TEM images, the nanotubes formed closer to the flame had a tendency of having larger diameters. HR-TEM images and Raman spectra revealed that carbon nanotubes synthesized had multi-walled structures with some defective graphite layers at the wall. Based on the graphite mode of the Raman spectra, it was believed that the optimal synthesis could be obtained as the substrate was positioned at between 5.5mm and 5.0mm, from the flame axis.

  • Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been chemically modified through the formation of carboxylic acid functionalities or by grafting octadecylamine and polystyrene onto them. We purified SWNTs with nitric acid to remove some remaining catalysts and amorphous carbon materials. After purification, we broke the carbon nanotubes and shortened their lengths by using a 3:1 mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid and nitric acid. During these purification and cutting processes, carboxylic acid units formed at the open ends of the SWNTs. Octa-decylamine and amino-terminated polystyrene were grafted onto the cut SWNTs by condensation reactions between the amine and carboxylic acid units. The cut SWNTs did not disperse in organic solvents, but the octadecylamine-grafted and polystyrene-grafted SWNTs dispersed well in dichloromethane and aromatic solvents (e.g., benzene, toluene). Composites were prepared by mixing polystyrene with the octadecylamine-grafted or polystyrene-grafted SWNTs. Each composite had a higher dynamic storage modulus than that of a pristine polystyrene. The composites exhibited enhanced storage moduli, complex viscosities, and unusual non-terminal behavior when compared with a monodisperse polystyrene matrix because of the good dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the polystyrene matrix.

  • The excellent and characteristic capacitor performance of pure single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), which differ from conventional activated carbon electrodes, is reported. SWNTs with little bundling showed higher specific capacitance than activated carbons. High operating voltage can be expected for pure SWNTs without metal contamination and graphene edge structure.
