  • We have grown vertically aligned carbon nanotubes in a large area of Co-Ni codeposited Si substrates by the thermal CVD using $C_2H_2$ gas. Since the discovery of carbon nanotubes, Synthesis of carbon nanotubes for mass production has been achieved by several methods such as laser vaporization arc discharge, and pyrolysis. In particular, growth of vertically aligned nanotubes is of technological importance for applications to FED. Recently, vertically aligned carbon nanotubes have been grown on glass by PECVD Aligned carbon nanotubes can be also grown on mesoporous silica and Fe patterned porous silicon using CVD. Despite such breakthroughs in the growth, the growth mechanism of the alignment are still far from being clearly understood. Furthermore, FED has not been clearly demonstrated yet at a practical level. Here, we demonstrate that carbon nanotubes can be vertically aligned on catalyzed Si substrate when the domain density reaches a certain value. We suggest that steric hindrance between nanotubes at an initial stage of the growth forces nanotubes to align vertically and then nanotubes are further grown by the cap growth mechanism.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized by inductively coupled plasma CVD at $450^{\circ}C$. CNTs were grown on the 1-nm-thick Fe-Ni-Co with $C_2H_2$ and $H_2$ at different pressures and plasma powers. CNTs were grown longer in height as the $H_{\alpha}/CH$ ratios became lower by decreasing plasma powers and increasing growth pressures.

  • Multiwall carbon nanotubes are synthesized by using VLS mechanism for the application to $H_2$ gas sensor. MWCNT is not suitable for hydrogen gas sensor due to its low response to the gas. To enhance the gas sensing performance, multiwall carbon nanotubes are coated with $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy and Transmission electron microscopy showed that the synthesized MWCNT were well dispersed with the diameter and wall thickness of approximately 10-30nm and 5nm, respectively. The MWCNT sensor showed the sensitivities of 1.33-9.5% for the $H_2$ concentration of 100-5000ppm at room temperature. These sensitivities are significantly improved to 6.64-46.65% by coating $TiO_2$ nanoparticles to the MWCNT sensor. The mechanisms of $H_2$ gas sensing improvement of the MWCNT sensor coated with $TiO_2$ nanoparticles are discussed.

  • Carbon nanotubes(CNTs) was successfully grown on Ni coated silicon wafer substrate by applying PECVD technique(Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition). As a catalyst, Ni thin film of thickness ranging from 15∼30nm was prepared by electron beam evaporator method. In order to find the optimum growth condition, the type of the gas mixture such as C$_2$H$_2$-NH$_3$was systematically investigated by adjusting the gas mixing ratio in temperature of 600$^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 0.4 torr. The diameter of the grown CNTs was 40∼150nm. As NH$_3$etching time increased the diameters of the nanotubes decreased whereas the density of nanotubes increased. TEM images clearly demonstrated synthesized nanotubes was multiwalled. We investigated electrical properties for the application of FED.

As a catalyst, Ni thin film of thickness ranging from 15∼30nm was prepared by electron beam evaporator system. In order to find the find the optimum growth condition, initially two different types of gas mixtures such as C$_2$H$_2$-NH$_3$ and C$_2$H$_2$-NH$_3$-Ar were systematically investigated by adjusting the gas mixing ratio in temperature of 600$^{\circ}C$ under 0.4 torr. The diameter of the grown CNTs was 40∼200nm. The diameter of the CNTs increases with increasing the Ni particles size. TEM images clearly demonstrated synthesized nanotubes to be multiwalled.

  • Multiwalled carbon nanotubes were massively produced by the catalytic reaction of C$_2$H$_2$ - Fe(CO)$\sub$5/ mixture at 750 - 950$^{\circ}C$ in a quartz tube reactor and over quartz substrates. Well-aligned MWNT array grows perpendicular to the quartz tube reactor and the quartz substrates at an average of 60 nm in diameter and up to several thousands of micrometers in length. This method does not require any pretreatment of substrates and CNTs are grown at atmospheric pressure. It could be suitable for mass production of multiwalled nanotubes. Scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope images of the nanotubes deposited on the substrates allowed us to monitor the quality of MWNTs grown under different operating conditions.

  • In this study, the capacity change of supercapacitor was investigated by surface treatments of carbon nanotubes as electrode materials with various methods, such as ball-milling, $KMnO_4$ and $H_2SO_4/HNO_3$ acid mixture. Surface treatments generated a number of defects on the surface of carbon nanotubes by attacking on $\pi$ bond in graphene layer, at which carboxyl groups were introduced. These hydrophilic groups could enhance the capacity by increasing the wettability of carbon nanotube surfaces. However, a drawback of the surface treatment was the decrease of conductivity by the loss of conduction path in graphene layer due to the defect formation. The surface treatment condition should be therefore optimized between hydrophilicity increase and conductivity decrease.

  • Hydrogen gas and carbon nanotubes along with nanocarbon were produced from commercial natural gas using fixed bed catalyst reactor system. The maximum amount of carbon (491 g/g of catalyst) formation was achieved on 25% Ni, 3% Cu supported catalyst without formation of CO/CO2. Pure carbon nanotubes with length of 308 nm having balloon and horn type shapes were also formed at 673 K. Three sets of catalysts were prepared by varying the concentration of Ni in the first set, Cu concentration in the second set and doping with K in the third set to investigate the effect on stabilization of the catalyst and production of carbon nanotubes and hydrogen by copper and potassium doping. Particle size analysis revealed that most of the catalyst particles are in the range of 20-35 nm. All the catalysts were characterized using powder XRD, SEM/EDX, TPR, CHN, BET and CO-chemisorption. These studies indicate that surface geometry is modified electronically with the formation of different Ni, Cu and K phases, consequently, increasing the surface reactivity of the catalyst and in turn the Carbon nanotubes/H2 production. The addition of Cu and K enhances the catalyst dispersion with the increase in Ni loadings and maximum dispersion is achieved on 25% Ni: 3% Cu/Al catalyst. Clearly, the effect of particle size coupled with specific surface geometry on the production of hydrogen gas and carbon nanotubes prevails. Addition of K increases the catalyst stability with decrease in carbon formation, due to its interaction with Cu and Ni, masking Ni and Ni:Cu active sites.

  • Carbon nanotubes(CNTs) are grown by using Co catalyst metal. CNTs fabricated by PECVD(plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition) method are studied in terms of surface reaction and surface structure by TEM and Raman analysing method and ate analysed in its electrical field emission characteristics with variation of space between anode and cathode. Acetylene(C$_2$H$_2$) gas is used as the carbon source, while ammonia and hydrogen gas are used as catalyst and dilution gas. The CNTs grown by hydrogen(H$_2$) gas plasma indicates better vortical alignment, lower temperature process, and longer tip, compared to that grown by ammonia(NH$_3$) gas plasma. The CNTs fabricated with Co(cobalt) catalyst metal and PECVD method show the multiwall structure in mid-circle type in tip-end and the inner vacancy of 10nm. Emission properties of CNTs indicate the turn-on field to be 2.6 V/${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ We suggest that CNTs can be possibly applied to the emitter tip of FEDs and high brightness flat lamp because of low temperature CNTs growth, low turn-on field.
