  • With increasing population density and high-rise expansion of buildings in recent years, elevators have become to play a pivotal role in our everyday lives as most people take an elevator several times even in a day. The elevator penetration and distribution rates in Korea have increased dramatically every year, and the emergence of skyscrapers leads to accelerating the development of elevator industry. Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) exhibit better mechanical and thermal properties than steel suitable for uses as elevator wire ropes. In this paper, in order to analyze the properties of CFRPs, the tensile strength of unidirectional (UD) CFRP wire ropes was characterized and finite element analysis was conducted for bending simulation. Simulation results were compared.

The Analysis on Properties of Epoxy/MWCNT for Bonding CFRP to Steel Plates (CFRP와 금속 재료의 접합을 위한 epoxy/MWCNT의 특성 분석)

  • The effect of a multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWNCT) on the adhesive properties and thermal properties of epoxy were studied by double lap-shear tests. Epoxy/MWCNT resins were prepared from a different amount of the MWCNT incorporated into the epoxy resins (araldite 2011). Steel plates and carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) were chosen as materials. Mechanical tests were performed by a universal testing machine (UTM). The analysis of thermal properties were conducted by a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The fracture surface morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscope. Compared to neat epoxy, it was found that the mechanical properties of epoxy/MWCNT resins are increased.

Carbon Nanotubes Reinforced Poly(ethylene terephthalate) Nanocomposites (탄소나노튜브로 강화시킨 Poly(ethylene terephthalate) 나노복합재료)

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) reinforced poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) composites are studied. To increase the interfacial interactions between PET and MWNTs, the MWNTs are functionalized with bishydroxy-ethylene-terephthalate (BHET). The functionalized MWNTs are melt blended into PET matrix using a twin screw extruder. The amount of MWNTs loaded in PET matrix ranges from 0.5 to 2.0 wt%. After compounding and spinning, the filaments are post-drawn and annealed. To verify the chemical modifications of carbon nanotubes, Raman, $^1H$ NMR, XPS, TGA and FE-SEM are used. The nanocomposites are also analyzed with DSC, TGA, and UTM. These tests show that crystallization temperature and thermal degradation temperature increase due to the functionalized MWNTs. Also, tensile test shows that yield strength and toughness increase more than 30% with addition of only 1 wt% of MWNTs. These results show that the introduction of BHET onto the MWNTs is a very effective way in manufacturing MWNT/PET composite.

AE Application for Fracture Behavior of SiC Reinforced CFRP Composites (SiC 강화 CFRP 복합재의 파괴거동에 관한 음향방출 적용)

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP) composite with a higher specific strength and rigidity is more excellent than conventional metallic materials or other organic polymer of FRP. It has been widely used in vehicles, aerospaces and high technology industries which are associated with nuclear power fields. However, CFRP laminated composite has several disadvantages as like a delamination, matrix brittleness and anisotropic fibers that are the weak points of the crack initiation. In this present work, the reinforced silicon carbide(SiC) particles were added to the interlayer of CFRP laminates in order to mitigate the physical vulnerability affecting the cracking and breaking of the matrix in the CFRP laminated composite because of excellent specific strength and thermal shock resistance characteristics of SiC. The 1wt% of SiC particles were spread into the CFRP prepreg by using a spray coating method. After that, CFRP prepregs were laminated for the specimen. Also, the twill woven type CFRP prepreg was used because it has excellent workability. Thus the mechanical and fracture behaviors of the twill woven CFRP laminated composite reinforced with SiC particles were investigated with the acoustic emission(AE) method under a fracture test. The results show that the SiC particles enhance the mechanical and fracture characteristics of the twill CFRP laminate composite.

Thermal Deformation of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Composite by Cure Shrinkage (탄소섬유강화 복합재료 성형시 화학수축에 의한 변형연구)

  • As the autoclave process progresses in a given cure cycle, residual stress in the composite product is induced by cure shrinkage of the resin. As a result, It generates the thermal deformation such as spring-in and warpage, and the inaccuracy of the final product increases. It is important to predict thermal deformation in aerospace parts which require precise fabrication. The research has been done on predicting and grasping curing process of composite material. In this study, the cure mechanism of composite materials according to the process is predicted through finite element analysis, and the effect of cure shrinkage on thermal deformation generated by the process is analyzed.

  • In this study, we designed car frames for collision analysis using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) as the lighter composite material. The impact conditions were 100 percent frontal impact, 40 percent frontal impact, and 90 degrees side impact. The impact analysis measured the maximum stress at velocities of 20km/h and 40km/h for each condition and evaluated the vulnerable points in the car frame. Additional supports have been designed both to improve the weak points in existing vehicle frames, and to be taken into account when new parts are assembled. Our impact analysis compared the results of maximum stress on the car frame with and without the support.

  • CFRP composites with light weight, high strength, and high elasticity by comparing with metal are widely used rather than previous steel plates. However, CFRP composite material has the weakness at hydrothermal and collapsed impact environment. Especially, moisture absorption into composite material can change molecule arrangement and chemical properties under hydrothermal environment. And static collapse experiment is the research in the differences of absorbed energy and deformation mode between moisture and non-moisture absorbed specimens. This study is compared and analyzed on the progress change of moisture absorption ratio after setting up the temperatures of 60 and 80 degrees C in order to comprehend how the change in the temperature influences on moisture absorption status inside CFRP composite materials.

  • Autoclave processing has a good quality of product, but manufacturing cost is expansive. After curing of composite, the unwanted deformation and distortion increase the manufacturing cost by redesign of tool parts. Therefore, manufacturing cost down is a big issue in processing level. For the reduction of tool costs, it is important to investigate the effects of tool materials and tool surface conditions. In this paper, we organized user subroutine in ABAQUS to consider the thermal effects of part and tool, and the results are compared with commercial code, COMPRO. And this paper suggests reference point for the selection of tool materials to reduce manufacturing costs.

Effect of Nitrogen Gas Pressure on the Mechanical Properties of Polymer Composite Materials (고분자 복합재료의 기계적 물성에 미치는 질소기압의 영향)

  • This study is about the effect of nitrogen gas pressures during manufacturing process on the mechanical properties of composite materials. $TiO_2$/epoxy resin nanocomposites and carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin(CFRP) composites were fabricated under various nitrogen gas pressures. Tensile strength test, vicker's hardness test and fracture surface observation were carried out to investigate the effect of nitrogen gas pressure. As a result, the tensile strength of nanocomposite and CFRP composites showed clearly increasing tendency by a change in the nitrogen gas pressure up to 3.0 atm and then the tensile strength decreased a little. However, the vicker's hardness of $TiO_2$/epoxy nanocomposites showed same hardness values regardless of the nitrogen gas pressures.

Static Strength of Composite Single-lap Joints Using I-fiber Stitching Process with different Stitching Pattern and Angle (I-fiber Stitching 공법을 적용한 복합재료 Single-lap Joint의 Stitching 패턴과 각도에 따른 정적 강도 연구)

  • Laminated composite materials have excellent in-plane properties, but are vulnerable in thickness directions, making it easy to delamination when bending and torsion loads are applied. Thickness directional reinforcement methods of composite materials that delay delamination include Z-pinning, Stitching, Tufting, etc., and typically Z-pinning and Stitching method are commonly used. The Z-pinning is reinforcement method by inserting metal or carbon pin in the thickness direction of prepreg, and the conventional stitching process is a method of reinforcing the mechanical properties in the thickness direction by intersecting the upper and lower fibers on the preform. In this paper, I-fiber stitching method, which complement and improve weakness of Z-pinning and Stitching method, was proposed, and the static strength of composite single-lap joints using I-fiber stitching process were evaluated. The single-lap joints were fabricated by a co-curing method using an autoclave vacuum bag process. The thickness of the composite adherend was fixed, and 5 types of specimens were manufactured with varying the stitching pattern (5×5, 7×7) and angle (0°, 45°). From the test, the failure load of the specimen reinforced by the I-fiber stitching process was increased by up to 143% compared to that of specimen without reinforcement.
