  • Adsorption experiment of carbon dioxide was performed on MCM41 silica with a 30 wt.% EDA(ethylenediamine) loading at different $CO_2$ inlet concentration and various adsorption temperature. The surface characteristics of $CO_2$ capturing agent were carried out using BET analysis, X-ray diffraction and FT-IR. The results of BET showed 781 $m^2/g$ for MCM41 and 464 $m^2/g$ for EDA/MCM41. X-ray diffraction results reveled typical hexagonal pore system. The higher sorption capacity of EDA/MCM41 was about 80 $mg_{CO2}/g_{sorbent}$ with 50% $CO_2$ inlet concentration and 303 K adsorption temperature. The isosteric heat of adsorption in 303-353 K ranged from -25.47 to -28.24 KJ/mole for EDA/MCM41, which indicates $CO_2$-EDA/MCM41 interaction with exothermic adsorption process. Finally, the performance of EDA/MCM41 in 10 consecutive sorption-desorption runs was a stable with only a minor drop in its sorption capacity.

  • In this study, we examined the properties of the concrete for the adsorption of carbon dioxide by adding in photosynthetic bacteria. As for the experimental plan, we measured slump, carbon dioxide concentration and compressive strength. The findings revealed the non-plastic cement added with photosynthetic bacteria had the greatest flexibility and showed carbon dioxide absorption and condensation delay due to the sugar constituents of photosynthetic bacteria. Giver the progress in the studies on the strength development, it is estimated to be used as CO2 reduction concrete.

  • An adsorption process to recover the pure $CH_4\;and\;CO_2$ from its mixture was examined. In this study, activated carbon fibers were used as a selective adsorbent. The activated carbon fibers has 78~94% micropore volume and 10.5~20.3${\AA}$ narrow pore size, and showed high adsorption rate and the good selectivity for $CO_2$ under the ambient pressure. The ACF with high surface area showed short mass transfer zone and long breakthrough time and, its adsorption capacity depended on the microporosity. Compared with single component adsorption, the amount adsorbed $CO_2$ on ACF increased by the roll-up of $CH_4$ in mixed gases. The adsorption selectivity increased as now rate and $CO_2$ concentration of mixed gases increased, showing 5.2 selectivity for 75% $CO_2$ concentration.

  • Functionalized adsorbent has been synthesized by piperazine(Pz) on activated carbon. Quantitative estimations of $CO_2$ were undertaken using gas chromatography with GC/TCD and the prepared adsorbents were characterized by BET surface area and FT-IR. It was also studied effect of various parameters such as piperazine loadings and adsorption temperature. The specific surface area decreased from $1212.0m^2/g$ to $969.8m^2/g$ by impregnation and FT-IR revealed a N-H functional group at about $1400cm^{-1}$ to $1700cm^{-1}$. The $CO_2$ adsorption capacity at $20^{\circ}C$ and $50{\sim}100^{\circ}C$ was as follow: AC > Pz(10)-AC> Pz(30)-AC> Pz(50)-AC at $20^{\circ}C$ and Pz(10)-AC > AC > Pz(30)-AC> Pz(50)-AC at $50{\sim}100^{\circ}C$. Therefore, for high temperature flue gas condition, the Pz(10)-AC showed the highest adsorption capacity due to physical adsorption and chemical adsorption by amino-group content. The results suggest that activated carbon impregnated with Pz is an effective adsorbent for $CO_2$ capture from real flue gases above $50^{\circ}C$.

  • High crystallinity coke-based activated carbon (hc-AC) is prepared using a potassium hydroxide solution to adsorb carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). The $CO_2$ adsorption characteristics of the prepared hc-AC are investigated at different temperatures. The X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that pitch-based cokes prepared under high temperature and pressure have a high crystal structure. The textural properties of hc-AC indicate that it consists mainly of slit-like pores. Compared to other textural forms of AC that have higher pore volumes, this slit-pore-shaped hc-AC exhibits higher $CO_2$ adsorption due to the similar shape between its pores and $CO_2$ molecules. Additionally, in these high-crystallinity cokes, the main factor affecting $CO_2$ adsorption at lower temperature is the pore structure, whereas the presence of oxygen functional groups on the surface has a greater impact on $CO_2$ adsorption at higher temperature.

  • Now, the world is increasingly anxious about fine dust due to abnormal temperatures caused by global warming and increased yellow dust caused by desertification, and the World Health Organization (WHO) pointed out that more than 99% of the world's population is exposed to fine dust. In this situation, the reduction rate of fine dust and carbon dioxide of the matrix was tested by using expanded graphite, an eco-friendly and porous material, to improve air quality. As a result of the test, since expanded graphite is a material that expands between layers compared to conventional graphite, the reduction rate of fine dust and carbon dioxide decreases as the replacement rate of expanded graphite increases.

  • In order to improve the portability of basic absorbents monoethanolamine (MEA) and glycine (Gly), both were supported on microporous activated carbon (AC). Chemical modification by alkali-metal ion exchange (of Li, Na, K) was carried out on Gly-based absorbents. All supported absorbents were subjected to $CO_2$ absorption capacity (pure $CO_2$) and selectivity (indoor level) tests. Textural and chemical characterizations were carried out on test sorbents. All impregnation brought about significant reduction of specific surface area and microporosity of the adsorbent Depreciation in the textural properties was found to result to reduction in pure $CO_2$ sorption. Contrarily, low-level $CO_2$ removal capacity was enhanced as the absorbent dosage increases, resulting in supported 5 molar MEA in methanol solution. Adsorption capacities were improved from 0.016 and 0.8 in raw ACs to 1.065 mmol/g for MEA's. Surface chemistry via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the supported sorbents showed the presence of amine, pyrrole and quaternary-N. In reducing sequence of potency, pyridine, amine and pyrrolic-N were noticed to contribute significantly to $CO_2$ selective adsorption. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherm study confirms the presence of various SNGs heterogeneously distributed on AC. The adsorption mechanism of the present AC adsorbents favored Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm at lower and higher $CO_2$ concentrations respectively.

  • An activated carbon which showed big adsorption capacities of iodine, potassium permanganate and phenol was prepared from the Korean ricechaff. By scanning electron micrographs and IR spectra, it was observed that the organic components in the rice-chaff were decomposed to carbon dioxide and vapor by the pyrolysis and the activation, that activated carbon particles had carbon-carbon structures with a lot of microporosity. The adsorption capacities of iodine, potassium permanganate and phenol were determined. The adsorption isotherm of phenol was well fitted in Freundlich's equation.

  • The purpose of this study was to gain basic information on the characteristics of $CO_2$ adsorption in relation to $Na_2CO_3$, $K_2CO_3$, $Li_2CO_3$-impregnated activated carbon in a Fixed Bed Reactor. From the results of this study the following conclusions were made: $Na_2CO_3$, $K_2CO_3$, $Li_2CO_3$-impregnated activated carbon had a longer breakthrough time and more enhanced adsorption capacity than activated carbon alone. When tested with isothermal adsorption and tested for $CO_2$ adsorption the amount of $CO_2$ adsorbed varied with temperature, $CO_2$ inlet concentration, gas flow rate, aspect ratio, etc. Based on the results, when Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Polanyi adsorption isotherms were used for linear regression of isothermal adsorption data, Langmuir adsorption isotherm was the most suitable. And, the optimum condition for $Na_2CO_3$ and $K_2CO_3$ impregnated activated carbon make-up was 1N and $Li_2CO_3$ was 0.1N. It could be concluded that adsorption capacity was decreased with adsorption temperature and increased gas concentration. When the aspect ratio (L/D) was varied 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0, the significant drop of adsorption amount was observed below 1.0 and breakthrough time was shortened with gas flow rate.
