  • This study presents the evaluation of CSM(Capacity Spectrum Method, ATC-40) in developing fragility curves for a sample concrete bridge. The CSM is originally developed as one of the simplified procedures for building structures, while this study adopts the CSM to develop fragility curves of bridge structures. Four(4) different approaches are demonstrated and the fragility curves developed are compared those by the nonlinear time history analysis. Fragility curves in this study are represented by lognormal distribution functions with two parameters and developed as a function of PGA. The sixty(60) ground acceleration time histories for the Los Angeles area developed for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) SAC(SEAOC-ATC-CUREe) steel project are used for the bridge analysis. The comparison of fragility curves by the CSM with those by the time history analysis indicates that the agreement is excellent for one of the methods investigated in this study. In this respect. it is recommended that the demand spectrum might be improved according to the guidelines suggested in this study. However, this observation might not always apply, depending on the details of specific bridge characteristic

  • The capacity spectrum method (CSM) can be used for the evaluation of inelastic maximum response of structures and has been recently used in the seismic design using the incorporation of pushover analysis and response spectrum method. To efficiently evaluate seismic performance of multi-degree-of freedom (MDOF) bridge structures, it is important that the equivalent response of MDOF bridge structures be calculated. In this study to calculate the equivalent response of MDOF system, equivalent responses are obtained by the using Song method, N2 method and Calvi method. Also, these are applied the CSM method and seismic performance of bridge according to the ESDOF method are compared and evaluated.

  • In the capacity spectrum method(CSM) using a linear response spectrum, the peak response of an inelastic system under a given earthquake load is estimated transforming the system into the equivalent elastic one. The CSM for estimating the peak inelastic response is evaluated in this paper. The equivalent period and damping ratio are calculated using the ATC-40, G lkan, Kowalsky, and Iwan methods, and the performance points are obtained according to the procedure B of ATC-40. Analysis results indicate that the ATC-40 method generally underestimates the peak response resulting in the unsafe design, while the G lkan and Kowalsky methods overestimate the responses. The Iwan method produces the values between those by the ATC-40 method and the G lkan and Kowalsky methods, and estimates the responses relatively closer to the exact ones. Further, it is found that the Kowalsky method gives the negative equivalent damping ratios depending on the hardening ratios, and thereby can not be used to estimate the responses in some cases.

  • The capacity spectrum method (CSM), which is known to be an approximate technique for assessing the seismic capacity of an existing structure, was originally proposed for simple building structures that could be modeled as single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems. More recently, however, CSM has increasingly been adopted for assessing most bridge structures, as it has many practical advantages. Some studies on this topic are now being performed, and a few results of these have been presented as ground-breaking research. However, studies have until now been limited to symmetrical straight bridges only. This study evaluates the practical applicability of CSM to the evaluation of irregular curved bridges. For this purpose, the seismic capacities of 3-span prestressed concrete bridges with different subtended angles subjected to some recorded earthquakes are compared with a more refined approach based on nonlinear time history analysis. The results of the study show that when used for curved bridges, CSM induces higher inelastic displacement responses than the actual values, and that the gap between the two becomes larger as the subtended angle increases.

  • Seismic fragility analysis has been developed to evaluate the seismic performance of existing nuclear power plants, but now its applicability has been extended to buildings and bridges. In general, the seismic fragility curves are evaluated from the nonlinear time-history analysis (THA) using many earthquake ground motions. Seismic fragility analysis using the nonlinear THA requires a time consuming process of structural modeling and analysis. To overcome this shortcoming of the nonlinear THA, simplified methods such as the displacement coefficient method (DCM) and the capacity spectrum method (CSM) are used for the seismic fragility analysis. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the seismic fragility curve calculated by the DCM and the CSM, the seismic fragility curves of a reinforced concrete shear wall structure calculated by the DCM and CSM are compared with those calculated by the nonlinear THA. In order to construct a numerical fragility curve, 190 artificially generated ground motions corresponding to the design spectrum and the methodology proposed by Shinozuka et al. are used.

  • Performance-based design concept is needed to evaluate the seismic capacity of building. In this study, the method estimating the performance point of the spatial structures based on capacity spectrum method (CSM) is proposed. And for efficient evaluation for the performance point of the spatial structures, the algorithm to convert spatial structural system to ESDOF system is simulated Its efficiency is confirmed by comparing with time history analysis of full model. And dynamic behaviors of spatial structures are examined by using this method. At last, evaluation of structural performance according to variation of stiffness after plastic deformation on the substructures is carried out.

  • Accuracy of seismic response evaluated by a capacity spectrum method (CSM) is generally known to be less than that by Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). In this paper, a procedure for IDA based seismic fragility curves for steel moment resisting frames was suggested. This study compares seismic fragility curves using the suggested method (IDA method) with those using a CSM and intends to verify the validity of the IDA method. The shapes of both seismic fragility curves are similar in slight and moderate damage states. However, in the case of extensive and complete damage states, the fragility curves obtained from the IDA method presents a more steep slope due to less variation (or uncertainties). This is due to the fact that the IDA method can properly capture the structural response beyond yielding rather than the CSM.

  • In this study, a method of probabilistic evaluation of the performance point of the structure obtained by capacity spectrum method (CSM) is presented. The performance point of the 4-story and 1-bay steel structure was determined by using CSM according to ATC-40. In order to analyze whether the demand spectrums exceed the performance limit of the structure, the limit displacements are derived for the performance limit of the structure defined from the plastic deformation angle of the structural member. In addition, by selecting a total of 30 artificial seismic wave having the response spectrum similar to the design response spectrum, the fragility curves were derived by examining whether the response spectrum obtained from the artificial seismic wave were exceeded each performance limit according to the spectral acceleration. The maximum likelihood method was used to derive the fragility curve using observed excess probabilities. It has been confirmed that there exists a probability that the response acceleration value of the design response spectrum corresponding to each performance limit exceeds the performance limit. This method has a merit that the stochastic evaluation can be performed considering the uncertainty of the seismic waves with respect to the performance point of the structure, and the analysis time can be shortened because the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) is not necessary.

  • Near field ground motions contain distinct, large amplitude pulses in both velocity and displacement. This paper presents an investigation on the characteristics of near filed earthquakes and their effects on seismic demands. For this purpose 20 sets of near field ground motion and 20 sets of far filed ground motion are compared with respect to Linear Elastic Response Spectrum(LERS), Response Modification Factor(R), Inelastic Response Spectrum(IRS), and performance point of Capacity Spectum Method(CSM).
