This study aimed to explore whether photodynamic therapy using Radachlorin and diode laser is an effective inhibitor of Candida albicans. Suspensions of Candida albicans were obtained, inoculated in petri dishes with Radachlorin, and incubated for 30 min. Then, the laser light of a diode laser was irradiated at at energy densities of 3 J/cm2, 5 J/cm2, 7 J/cm2. As a result, Candida albicans showed a killing rate of 91.5% at an energy density of 7 J/cm2. This study found that photodynamic therapy using a Radachlorin and diode laser was effective for the inhibition of Candida albicans.

Antifungal activities of pomegranate were investigated. Seventy percent ethanol extracts of seeds, peels, and whole fruits of pomegranate showed similar antifungal activities against Candida albicans in liquid media, whereas extract of whole fruit showed relatively high antifungal activity in solid media. When 70% ethanol extracts were fractionated sequentially with chloroform and ethyl acetate, ethyl acetate fraction exhibited the highest anti-fungal activities against C. albicans. Ethyl acetate fractions of whole fruits and peel portions showed at least 36% and 25% growth against C. albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis, and Candida lusitaniae in liquid media, respectively. These results indicate that pomegranate contains antifungal compounds soluble with organic solvents.

With the continuing demand for new solutions in the development of effective and safe candidiasis therapies, we investigated the efficacy of an antifungal agent from the marine brown alga Eisenia bicyclis. The methanolic extract of E. bicyclis evinced potential antifungal activity against Candida species. The ethyl acetate (EtOAc)-soluble extract from E. bicyclis demonstrated the strongest antifungal activity against Candida species among five solvent-soluble extracts. Indeed, the EtOAc-soluble extract showed minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging from 4 to 8 mg/mL. Furthermore, the EtOAc-soluble extract considerably reversed high-level fluconazole resistance of Candida species. The MIC values of fluconazole against Candida species decreased substantially (from 64 to $4{\mu}g/mL$) in combination with the MIC of the EtOAc-soluble extract (4 mg/mL). The fractional inhibitory concentration indices of fluconazole ranged from 0.531 to 0.625 in combination with 4, 2, or 1 mg/mL of the EtOAc-soluble extract against Candida isolates, indicating that these combinations exert a marked synergistic effect against Candida isolates. These findings imply that compounds derived from E. bicyclis can be a potential source of natural antifungal agents against Candida species.
This study was carried out to screen yeasts effective in reducing odor from pig feces. Three isolates from soil and compost sources were selected to treat pig feces. On the basis of morphological and biochemical characteristics, one isolate from compost was Candida rugosa, and two isolates from soil were Candida rugosa and Candida maris. These isolates showed deodorizing activity by reducing the concentration of ${NH}_3$ and R-${NH}_2$. Volatile fatty acids (VFA) are the specific malodorous compounds of pig feces, and the Candida maris from soil showed a 100% reduction of butyric, iso-butyric, and iso-valeric acid in 10% pig slurry medium. However, the Candida rugosa from compost showed a 100% reduction of butyric and iso-butyric acid while that from soil showed a 100% reduction of propionic, butyric acid and iso-valeric acid in the medium. Also, these yeasts were effective in reducing $NH_{4}-N$, soluble-N, and biological oxygen demand (BOD).
A 7-year-old castrated male Maltese developed anemia, ascites with peritonitis, and vomiting after urethrostomy. A microbial culture test of the peritoneal fluid indicated Candida albicans. Antifungal therapy was administered with intravenous fluconazole combined with antibacterial therapy. The patient recovered completely 37 days after referral admission.
About 10% mortality occurred in cultured rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss at a marine farm in Jeju in 2014. Diseased fish showed markedly abdominal distension and distended stomach. Although parasites, bacteria or viruses were not isolated from diseased fish, numerous Candida sp. were isolated from distended stomach. In experimental infection with Candida sp., mortality was not observed in most fish and clinical sign of distended stomach was not observed in the fish. These results suggest that Candida sp. may not be the etiologic agent of stomach distension syndrome. This is the first report of stomach distension syndrome in seawater farmed rainbow trout in Korea.
The strain which produced glutathione was isolated from soil samples. The isolated strain was identified as the genus Candida through its morphological. cultural and physiological characteristics. The highest production of glutathione by Candida sp. was obtained after cultivation with shaking for 36 hours in the culture medium containing fructose 1.0%, yeast extract 4.0%. NaCI 0.04%, thiamine-HCI $5{\mu}g$/ml, and L-cysteine 0.04%. The optimal pH and temperature for the glutathione production were pH 6.0 and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. The glutathione production by Candida sp. under the optimal culture condition was $92{\mu}g/ml$.
Background: Otomycosis is a fungal infection that comprises 7~10% of outer ear infections. Although the occurrence is higher in humid climates, relatively few studies have investigated otomycosis occurrences in humid environments. While recurrent chronic otitis media discharge in the ear creates a milieu in which otomycosis is likely to occur, investigations of otomycosis co-occurring with chronic otitis media have been rare. Objective: To examine the characteristics of patients with otomycosis co-occurring with chronic otitis media and identify causative fungi. Methods: The study included 60 patients with chronic otitis media who presented typical otomycosis findings in the outer ear canal and the presence of fungi. Patients were treated in the department of otolaryngology, Daegu Catholic University Medical Center, between July 2011 and June 2018. Results: The mean patient age was 57.77 years, and our study included 20 men and 40 women (p=0.010). The lesion was on the right in 39 patients and on the left in 21 (p=0.020). Ear discharge was the most common chief complaint at diagnosis. Of the 54 patients over age 19, 10 had diabetes (18.5%). Aspergillus was causative in 29 patients and Candida in 31. Aspergillus niger was identified in 15 patients, Aspergillus sp. in 14, Candida parapsilosis in 12, Candida sp. in six, and Candida albicans in five. Conclusion: Otomycosis and chronic otitis media co-occurrences increase with age. The Aspergillus and Candida genera were similar in proportion. A. niger was the most common Aspergillus species, while C. parapsilosis was the most common Candida.
Purpose: This study aimed to propose an efficient treatment approach for infection with different candida species. Methods: Fifty-three patients who presented with a chief complaint of oral mucosal pain and exhibited positive candida culture findings were divided into two groups (Candida albicans and non-albicans). Pain, mucosal manifestations, salivary flow rates, durations of disease and treatment, and responses to treatment (nystatin and clonazepam) were investigated in both groups. Results: Patients in the C. albicans group exhibited more prominent clinical characteristics (erythematous lesions, tongue coatings, and hyperalgesia) than those in the non-albicans group. In total, 70% of patients in the non-albicans group showed no abnormalities in the oral mucosa. Patients in the C. albicans group showed increased resistance to nystatin treatment compared to those in the non-albicans group, especially with longer disease durations. The patients resistant to nystatin treatment showed positive responses to clonazepam. Conclusions: Patients with oral mucosal pain should be tested for the presence of Candida, even in the absence of mucosal abnormalities, especially those infected with non-albicans species. If no response to antifungal therapy is observed, treatment with clonazepam should be initiated, especially in patients infected with C. albicans.
Of the many pathogenic Candida species, Candida albicans is the main fungal pathogen of humans. The oral environmental factors considered in the Candida albicans colony forming unit test contain both host and microbial factors associated with candidiasis. In particular, Candida biofilms can develop on surfaces of prosthesis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of oral Candida species between the type of prosthesis and the situation of oral environment in patient with prosthetic appliance. The patients were 30 elderly subjects with different types of prosthesis, 7 who wore denture, 12 who wore implant and 15 who wore removable orthodontic appliance. We used Candida albicans colony forming unit test using saliva to exam the distribution of Candida albicans related with 5 oral environmental factors, gender, smoking or nonsmoking, alcohol/nonalcohol consumption, the type of prosthetic appliance and its treatment duration as well as tooth brushing frequency per day. In conclusion, for the patient's gender, site in the oral cavity and the type of prosthetic appliance and its treatment duration was associated with an increase in the distribution of Candida albicans in saliva. The distribution of Candida albicans within the oral cavity performs to be modulated to varying extents by oral environmental factors and, further investigations are required to elucidate these complex interactions.
