Ash of Anadarac tegillarca granosa shell was used for preparation of calcium lactate and calcium citrate, and improvement of their purity was carried out by using ammonium chloride process (ACP) and ammonium nitrate process (ACP). Purity of calcium lactate and calcium citrate made by the reaction of ash of Anadarac tegillarca granosa shell with lactic acid solution and with citric acid solution was 94.35-96.72 and $87.58-93.06\%$, respectively. However, purity of calcium lactate and calcium citrate prepared with purified calcium carbonate pre-purified from the ash of Anadarac fegiliarca granosa shell using ACP and ANP method was 99.53-100.34 and $99.32-99.88\%$, respectively. The purity of these calcium products were higher than those of calcium lactate and calcium citrate made with ash of Anadarac tegillarca granosa shell. Whiteness of calcium lactate and calcium citrate prepared with purified calcium carbonate pre-purified using ACP and ANP method was 94.8-98.5 and 99.4-101.5, respectively. Whiteness of these calcium products was higher than that of calcium lactate (91.8) and calcium citrate (92.9) made with the ash of Anadarac tegillarca granosa shell. Therefore, we estimated that calcium lactate and calcium citrate prepared with purified calcium carbonate using ACP and ANP method could be used potentially as a food additive for calcium supplement.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the regional 야fferences in dietary supplement use and related factors among college students participating in nutritional education programs via the internet. The subjects in this study were 797 college students (male: 518, female: 279). A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire about dietary supplement use, demographic characteristics, health-related lifestyles, nutrient intake, and data were collected via the internet and by mail. Dietary supplements were taken by 82.2% of subjects (males: 76.3%, females: 85.3%). There was a significant regional difference in supplement use (p<0.01). The supplements, used most frequent by male students in the Seoul and Incheon areas were lactic acid beverages and gagogi, in that order. Male students in the Kyunggi area used gagogi and lactic acid beverages in that order. Lactic acid beverages and Chinese medicine were used most frequently by male students in the Chungcheong area. Male students in the Kyungsang area used lactic acid beverages and water-soluble vitamins, in that order. Male students in Seoul and Kyungsang areas showed significantly higher percentage of keep on taking supplements compared to other areas (p<0.05). Both male and female students in the Seoul area had more frequent medical examinations, in comparison to students in other areas (p<0.05). Male students in the Kyungsang and Seoul areas took significantly more calcium (p<0.05) and iron (p<0.05), in comparison to students in other areas. Female students id the Kyunsang area took significantly more Vitamin A, phosphorous and iron (p<0.05), while those in the Seoul area took significantly more Vitamin C (p <0.01) and calcium (p<0.05) . Male students in the Chungcheong area took significantly less seaweed, in comparison to students in other areas (p<0.05) . Male students in the Seoul area had the highest amount of animal fat and oil, while those in the Incheon area ate the lowest amount of animal oil and fat (p<0.05). Female students in the Kyunggi area ate the highest amount of fruit, while those in the Incheon area ate the lowest amount of fruit (p< 0.05) , Female students in the Incheon area ate the highest amount of seaweed, while those in the Kyunggi area ate the lowest amount of seaweed (p<0.01). Therefore, it can be concluded that it is necessary to develop dietary supplements to optimize the nutritional status of college students in different areas of Korea.

The objective of this study was to obtain data on the safety-in-use of nano calcium as a dietary supplement by assessing its acute and subacute oral toxicities in female and male Sprague-Dawley rats. A single oral dose of 5,000 mg/kg of nano calcium did not result in mortality or significant changes in the general behavior and gross appearance of the internal organs of rats. For subacute toxicity study, nano calcium was administered orally at a dose of 1,000 mg/kg daily for 14 days. There were no significant differences in organ weights between control and treated groups of both sexes. Hematological analysis and blood chemistry revealed no toxic effects of nano calcium. Pathologically, neither gross abnormalities nor histopathological changes were observed. These results show that nano calcium possesses very low toxicity as indicated in a rat model.
A study was conducted to determine the effects of feeding a diet containing no Ca supplement (limestone) during the late finishing period on growth, marbling and serum 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin $D_3$ level in Korean native cattle. Twenty-four steers (20${\sim}$24 mo of age) were divided into two groups of 12 each: one group assigned to a control diet (concentrates containing 2.5% limestone) and the other to a diet containing no calcium supplement. They were allowed to have free access to diets (concentrates and orchard grass hay) and water during the entire feeding period (223 d). Serum $Ca^{2+}$, Ca and P concentrations were not influenced by diets, but serum 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin $D_3$ concentrations determined 2 or 6 mo after the beginning of feeding the experimental diets were higher (P<0.01) in steers fed the diet without Ca supplement than in those fed the control diet (78.3 vs 51.7 and 80.3 vs 51.1 pg/mL, respectively). Steers fed the diet without Ca supplement tended to have a higher intake of concentrates, but a lower intake of hay, compared to those fed the control diet. Average daily gain was higher (P<0.05) in steers fed the diet without Ca supplement than in those fed the control diet. Feeding the diet without Ca supplement remarkably (P<0.01) increased the marbling score (5.1 vs 2.2) and the muscle (M. longissimus dorsi) fat content (10.2 vs 6.7%) with a concomitant decrease in moisture content (67.6 vs 70.4%), compared to feeding the control diet. Ribeye area was increased (77.2 vs 82.8 $cm^2$) with the diet without Ca supplement, compared to the control diet (P<0.05). Meat color, pH and water-holding capacity in longissimus muscle were not different between the two groups. The Warner-Brazler Shear (WBS) force of the longissimus muscle was slightly (P=0.08) lower in steers fed the diet without Ca supplement than in steers fed the control diet (2.9 vs 3.2 kg/1.27-cm diameter core). Sensory evaluation showed that feeding the diet without Ca supplement slightly (P<0.05) improved tenderness (4.9 vs 4.5) and flavor (4.9 vs 4.6), compared to feeding the control diet, but juiciness was not affected by diets. Results showed that deletion of Ca supplement from finishing diets is beneficial, increasing growth and marbling partly through an increased energy intake and induced 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin $D_3$ synthesis that may increase intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration and in turn fat synthesis.

We have examined the effects of mayonnaise on the lipid metabolism and calcium bioavailability of rats by using myonnaise. Sprague Dawley male rats(131$\pm$5g) were divided into four dietary groups[Control (Con, 10% soybean oil), Mayonnaise(M5), 10% Mayonnaise(M10)and 15% Mayonnaise(M15)] were fed ad libitum with experimental diets for four weeks. Final body weight exhibited a decrease in the M10 group, also final thymus organ weight showed a significant decreasing trend(p<0.05). The levels of serum, liver and adipose total lipid were significantly different among the four experimental groups(p<0.05). Serum calcium levels were significantly lower in the M15 group than in among the groups(p<0.05). On the other hand, the elevation of serum cholesterol levels were not clearly observed, but triglyceride levels were elevated the M5 and M15 group. The P/S ratio of adipose tissue were higher in the M10 group(2.35$\pm$0.35) than any other groups. Free EDTA in mayonnaise was 0.0307~0.0387%, moisture 12.46~16.49% and calcium 0.012~0.019%. But commercial mayonnaise contained free EDTA higher than the safe use (0.0075%). Safety problems of EDTA additives resulted from mass processed mayonnaise are arising. Though the evaluation of safety can not reach a conclusion with only one or two clinical case studies. It often simply jumps to conclusion. Therefore more wide ranged discussion and deepened study is required to search for the solution of safety problems.
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of chromium (Cr) on the growth performance, bone trait, serum traits, and immune responses in broilers. The broilers were fed corn-soybean meal basal diet supplemented with Cr at level of 0(control), 200, 400, or 800 ppb in the form of chromium picolinate (CrPic). The broilers were fed treated diets for 6 weeks in Exp. 1, but the Cr supplement was removed for the last 3 weeks in Exp. 2. Exp. 1 showed that dietary supplement of Cr did not affect growth performance of the broiler, though improved feed efficiency (p<0.05) was observed during 0 to 3 weeks. Moreover, serum total (p<0.05) and HDL cholesterols (p<0.06) were significantly higher in pooled Cr added group at 6 weeks of age, however, the difference was not significant in Exp. 2. The pooled Cr added group in Exp.1 had significantly lower (p<0.05) alkaline phosphatase activity and higher (p<0.09) calcium at 3 weeks. Significantly lower phosphorus was also observed in Exp. 2. With continued supplement of Cr as in Exp. 1, the alkaline phosphatase activity maintained higher at 6 weeks, as opposed to significantly lower in Exp. 2, which had no further Cr supplement. Higher bone breaking strength was observed in 400 ppb Cr supplemented in Exp. 1, though not significantly different. Serum glucose and triglyceride were not affected by Cr supplement. Antibody against Infectious Bronchitis (IB) was significantly (p<0.05) higher with 400 ppb Cr supplemented, and anti-Newcastle disease (ND) antibody also tended to be higher (p<0.06) in pooled Cr added group at 6 weeks of age in Exp. 1. Peripheral blood blastogenesis activity was not different among the treatments. The results suggest that diet supplemented with 400 ppb CrPic may be beneficial to the broiler.
The purpose of this study was to Investigate the effects of green tea catechin on changes of mineral contents in chronic cadmium-poisoned rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 100 $\pm$ 10g were randomly assigned one of normal group and three cadmium poisoned groups. Cadmium groups were classified to catechin free diet(Cd-0C group), 0.25% catechin diet(Cd-0.25C group) and 0.5% catechin diet(Cd-0.5C group) according to the levels of catechin supplement. Animals were raised for 20 weeks. Cadmium was supplied in drinking water which contained 50ppm Cd$^{2+}$. Effects of catechin were analyzed on changes of mineral contents in chronic cadmium poisoned rats by determining the calcium accumulation in bones, blood, urine and faces and phosphorus In blood and urine. Cd-poisoning inducted the decrease of red blood cell(RBC), white blood cell(WBC), contents of blood hemoglobin and hematocrit, but the levels of those indices were increased by catechin supplementation. The contents of tibia and femur in Cd-0C group was significantly lower than in normal group, but those of catechin supplemetation group was similar to normal group. The calcium contents of urine and faces were higher in Cd-poisoned groups than in normal group, but they was lowered by catechin supplementation. The phosphorus contents of blood and urine in Cd-0C group was significantly lower than in normal group, but that of catechin supplementation group was similar to normal group. Catechin supplementation improved the calcium metabolism in chronic cadmium poisoned rats by increasing the contents of minerals such as calcium and phosphorus in blood and femur and by lowering the urinary and fecal calcium.m.
Mycelial growth of L. edodes by supplement nutrition of softwood was studied on a sawdust medium. The sawdust used was from the following softwood species : Larix leptolepis, Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis. The added nutritions consisted of carbon nutritions(sucrose, active carbon, xylose, glucose, paper pellet), nitrogen nutritions(potassium nitrate, ammonium chloride, asparagine, glutamic acid) and vegetable oil(rice bran oil). The sawdust medium was a mixture of 76% sawdust, 20% rice bran, 3% carbon nutrition, 0.4% nitrogen nutrition and 0.6% calcium carbonate. Following addition of carbon and nitrogen nutritions on the sawdust medium proved most suitable : L. leptolepis (glucose, glutamic acid), P. densiflora (active carbon, asparagine) and P. koraiensis (xylose, glutamic acid). The highest mycelial growth was obtained from sawdust medium of optimum condition with 97% of L. leptolepis, 110% of P. densiflora and 98% of P. koraiensis. This study has provided useful preliminary information for the cultivation of L. edodes.
This study examined the effect of calcium (AC) extracted from salt fermented anchovy Engraulis japonicus on osteoporosis in ovariectomized (OVX) SD female rats. After AC treatment for 8 weeks, the body weight of the OVX-AC group decreased, while the weight of the OVX group (control) increased 43.9%. The blood osteocalcin, calcium, and ALP levels were examined as physiological markers for osteoporosis. The concentrations of all markers were elevated in the OVX-AC group compared to the OVX group. Thus, anchovy calcium is useful as an organic calcium supplement.
Biomaterials have been used to supplement and restore function and structure by replacing or restoring parts of damaged tissues and organs. In ancient times, the medical use of biomaterials was limited owing to infection during surgery and poor surgical techniques. However, in modern times, the medical applications of biomaterials are diversifying owing to great developments in material science and medical technology. In this paper, we introduce biomaterials, focusing on calcium phosphate ceramics, including octacalcium phosphate, which has recently attracted attention as a bone graft material.
