  • In this study, deoxidation of Ti scrap using liquid calcium was investigated. Experiments were conducted in a closed stainless steel chamber under Ar atmosphere during 30 to 90 minutes. Oxygen content of Ti scrap was reduced from 0.54 to 0.19 wt% by calciothermic reduction in 30 minutes at $1000^{\circ}C$ and 2.5 Ti/Ca mass ratio. By the calciothermic reduction of Ti scrap for 30 minutes under the reaction temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$ and 2.5 Ti/Ca mass, a minimum oxygen content of about 0.126 wt% in Ti scrap was obtained.

  • Uranium ingot is produced by metallothermic reduction of uranium tetrafluoride using magnesium or calcium as reductant. Presence of oxygen containing compounds viz. uranyl fluoride and uranium oxide in the starting uranium fluoride has a significant effect on the firing time, final temperature of the charge, slag-metal separation and hence the metal recovery. As reported in the literature, the maximum tolerable limit for uranyl fluoride in the UF4 is 2.5 wt% and limit for uranium oxide content is in the range 2-3 wt%. No theoretical or experimental basis is available till date for these limits. Analyses have been carried out in this study to understand the effect of UO2F2 concentration in the starting fluoride on the final temperature of the products and thus the reduction characteristics. UF4 having uranyl fluoride concentration, less than as well as more than 2.5 wt%, have been investigated. Thermodynamic calculations have been carried out to arrive at a general expression for the final temperature attained by the products during calciothermic reduction of UF4. Finally, an upper limit for the oxygen containing impurities has been estimated using the CaO-CaF2 phase diagram.

  • This paper compares the effect of using different types of iron powders for the preparation of $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ by calciothermic reduction-diffusion (CRD). Three types of iron powder were used: carbonyl, sponge and water atomized. The results show that, when immediately nitrogenated after the CRD process, $Sm_2Fe_{17}$ prepared from sponge and water atomized iron powders yield $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_3$-magnets with a high degree of texture. However, after a suitable treatment with hydrogen followed by nitrogenation, $Sm_2Fe_{17}$-powders made from Carbonyl iron produce magnets with the best quality regarding coercivity, remanence and degree of texture.

  • Direct reduction of $Ta_2O_5$ using liquid calcium was investigated. The experiment was conducted in a closed stainless steel chamber in an Ar atmosphere for 5-120 minutes. Most of $Ta_2O_5$ was reduced to ${\alpha}-Ta$ in 30 minutes above 1173 K and at a molar ratio of Ca and $Ta_2O_5$ above 10. The particles size increased with the reaction temperature, but it did not change much above 1223 K. The oxygen content of metal Ta was about 1 wt%.

  • Production of fine tantalum powder by calciothermic reduction of tantalum oxides ($Ta_{2}O_5$) pellet through an electronically mediated reaction (EMR) has been investigated. $Ta_{2}O_5$ pellet feed and reductant calcium-nickel (Ca-Ni) alloy were charged into electronically isolated locations in a molten $CaCl_2$ bath. The current flow through an external path between the feed (cathode) and reductant (anode) locations was monitored. The current approximately 4.7A was measured during the reaction in the external circuit connecting cathode and anode location. Tantalum powder with approximately 99 $mass\%$ purity was readily obtained after each experiment. Tantalum powder by EMR using $Ta_{2}O_5$ pellet feed was fine compared with that of metal powder by metallothermic reduction and EMR using $Ta_{2}O_5$ powder feed.

  • Production of titanium powder directly from tantalum oxides ($TiO_2$) pellet through an electronically mediated reaction (EMR) by calciothermic reduction has been investigated. Feed material ($TiO_2\;pellet$) and reductant (Ca-Ni alloy) were charged into electronically isolated locations in a molten calcium chloride ($CaCl_2$) bath at $950^{\circ}C$. The current flow through an external circuit between the feed (cathode) and reductant (anode) locations was monitored during the reduction of $TiO_2$. The current approximately 3.2A was measured during the reaction in the external circuit connecting cathode and anode location. After the reduction experiment, pure titanium powder with low nickel content was obtained even though Ca-Ni alloy was used as a reductant. These results demonstrate that titanium powder can be produced without direct physical contact between the feed and reductant. In certain experimental conditions, pure titanium powder with approximately $99.5\;mass\%$ purity was successfully obtained.

  • In this study, direct reduction of $ZrO_2$ using liquid calcium was investigated. The influence of molar ratio of Ca and $ZrO_2$, reaction time and temperature on the reduction behavior of $ZrO_2$ was studied. Experiments were conducted in a closed stainless steel chamber under Ar atmosphere during 5 to 60 minutes. Most of the $ZrO_2$ was reduced to Zr in 5 minutes at 1223 K and 3 Ca/$ZrO_2$ molar ratio. The minimum oxygen content in reduced metal Zr was obtained about 0.66 wt% at 1373 K after 30 minutes and 4 Ca/$ZrO_2$ molar ratio. The morphology of zirconium powder obtained was highly affected by the reaction temperature and reaction time.
