  • Anchors and saddles are used to have sufficient geometrical rigidity and make target configuration of main cable of suspension bridge. Neglecting the sliding effect at saddles, points at them have been idealized as fixed nodes in lots of former studies. In general, sliding effects are reported to show significant structural behaviors of main cable and cause to the different responses of bridges. During early erection steps of the suspension bridge, especially, the sliding effect occurs easily because there is large difference of cable tension between main and side span in removing set-back ropes or not applying set-back. This study presents the finite element analysis considering to cable sliding effect and shows the comparison of differences between sliding and non-sliding at election sequence. The analysis of sliding between main cables and saddles needs to obtain more realistic responses because the analysis result can represent unfavorably different responses of bridges. Moreover, the sliding analysis method and results in this study can be used to basic criteria in engineering design and construction steps.

  • In the last decades there have been frequent reports of oscillations of slender tension members under simultaneous action of rain and wind - characterized by large amplitudes and low frequencies. The members, e.g. cables of cable-stayed bridges, slightly inclined hangers of arch bridges or cables of guyed-masts, show a circular cross section and low damping. These rain-wind induced vibrations negatively affect the serviceability and the lifespan of the structures. The present article gives a short literature review, describes a mathematical approach for the simulation of rain-wind induced vibrations, sums up some examples to verify the calculated results and discusses measures to suppress the vibrations.

  • In this paper, a five degree-of-freedom haptic device is proposed. The proposed haptic device has a pen which is suspended by tensioned six strings. Human operator handles the pen. Six DC motors are used as actuators to generate tensions in six strings to make resultant force feedback at the pen to the human operator Six encoders are used for calculating the movement of the pen. A digital controller is used for generate control signals for the suitable tension in the six strings. A current amplifiers is used for amplifying the control signals. Cable-suspended system has advantages of structure simplicity (only with several strings driven by motors without using other tensioning mechanisms), low inertia, and high force-to-weight ratio. Pen-based system has advantages of compactness and ...

  • Elastomer is extensively used to reduce of vibration machine or structure. Over the years an enormous effort has been put into developing procedures to provide properties of rubber material fur design function. However, there are still a lot of difficulties to analyze static characteristic of rubber components with hyper elasticity and nonlinear large deformation. In this paper material property is obtained by strain-stress curve using a tension test. (omitted)

  • An extensive numerical investigation on the magnetorheological (MR) damper-based smart passive control system for mitigating vibration of stay cables under wind loads has been conducted. The smart passive system is incorporated with an electromagnetic induction (EMI) device for reducing complexity of the conventional MR damper based semi-active control system by eliminating an external power supply part and a feedback control part (i.e., sensors and controller). In this study, the control performance of the smart passive system has been evaluated by using a cable structure model extracted from a full-scale long stay cable with high tension. Numerical simulation results of the proposed smart damping system are compared with those of the passive and semi-active control systems employing MR dampers. It is demonstrated from the results that the control performance of the smart passive control system is better than those of the passive control cases and comparable to those of the semi-active control systems in the forced vibration analysis as well as the free vibration analysis, even though there is no external power source in the smart passive system.

  • The dynamic behavior of a cable-stayed bridge due to random wind forces is investigated. The effects of the steady wind, the self-excited and the buffeting forces are studied. The dynamic analysis of the structure is carried out by the frequency domain method utilizing the mode superposition. Example analysis are performed for Dolsan Bridge, which is under construction at Yeosu, Jeonnam. Aerodynamic stability of the bridge is investigated and the vertical motion of the girder as well as the tension variations of the cables is obtained.

  • The structural system that discreterized continuous shells is frequently used to make dome-type structures and these structures show the unstable phenomena by snap-through or bifurcation when a load level reaches certain critical value. The characteristic structural behaviour of a cable dome shows a strong nonlinearity and very sensitive according to the initial imperfection. In this study the shape finding problem by applying initial tension stress is investigated and using this the unstable phenomena of perfectly shaped and initially imperfected shape model by external forces are examined to grasp the unstable behavior of cable dome using the Geiger-type model.

Recently, there has been increasing need for adopting smart sensing technologies to SHM, so this review focuses on smart sensing, monitoring, and assessment for civil infrastructure. Firstly, the research activities on smart sensor technology is reviewed including optical fiber sensors, piezoelectric sensors, wireless smart sensors, and vision-based sensing system. Then, a brief overview is given to the recent advances in smart monitoring and assessment techniques such as vibration-based global monitoring techniques, local monitoring with piezoelectric materials, decentralized monitoring techniques for wireless sensors, wireless power supply and energy harvest. Finally, recent joint SHM activities on several test beds in Korea are discussed to share the up-to-date information and to promote the smart sensors and monitoring technologies for applications to civil infrastructure. It includes a Korea-US joint research on test bridges of the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC), a Korea-US-Japan joint research on Jindo cable-stayed bridge, and a comparative study for cable tension measurement techniques on Hwamyung cable-stayed bridge, and a campaign test for displacement measurement techniques on Sorok suspension bridge.

  • The paper presents a model to calculate reinforcement strain using measured crack width in members under applied tension, flexure, and/or shear stress. Crack mapping using a new type of distributed coaxial cable sensors for health monitoring of large-scale civil engineering infrastructure was recently proposed and developed by the authors. This paper shows the results and performance of such sensors mounted on near surface of two flexural beams and a large scale reinforced concrete box girder that was subjected to cyclic combined shear and torsion. The main objectives of this health monitoring study was to correlate the sensor's response to strain in the member, and show that magnitude of the signal's reflection coefficient is related to increases in applied load, repeated cycles, cracking, and reinforcement yielding. The effect of multiple adjacent cracks, and signal loss was also investigated. The results shown in this paper are an important step in using the sensors for crack mapping and determining reinforcement strain for in-situ structures.

  • In this study, a determination method of structural member section based on Nonlinear behaviors of steel cable-stayed bridges and the Harmony Search algorithm was presented. The Harmony Search algorithm determines the structural member section of cable-stayed bridges by repeating the process of setting the initial value, initializing the harmony memory, configuring the new harmony memory, and updating the harmony memory to search for the optimal value. The nonlinear initial shape analysis of a three-dimensional steel cable-stayed bridge was performed with the cross-section of the main member selected by the Harmony Search algorithm, and the optimal cross-section of the main members of the cable-stayed bridge, such as pylons, girders, cross-beams, and cables, reflecting the complex behavior characteristics and the nonlinearity of each member was determined in consideration of the initial tension and shape. The total weight was used as the objective function for determining the cross-section of the main member of the cable-stayed bridges, and the load resistance ability and serviceability based on the ultimate state design method were used as the restraint conditions. The width and height ratio of the girder and cross-section were considered additional restraint conditions. The optimal sections of the main members were made possible to be determined by considering the geometry and material nonlinearity of the pylons, girders, and cross-sections and the nonlinearity of the cable members. As a result of determining the optimal cross-section, it was confirmed that the proposed analysis method can determine the optimal cross-section according to the various constraint conditions of the cable-stayed bridge, and the structural member section of the cable-stayed bridge considering the nonlinearity can be determined through the Harmony Search algorithm.
