  • Ground anchors are mostly used to improve the resistance capacity of retaining walls. The end of the anchor is connected to retaining wall through tendons and the forces in tendons are transferred to ground. In this study, we plan that the new anchor system increases the tension force in tendons and improves the pullout resistance characteristics of the system. In order to increase the pullout resistance capacity of existing anchor system, the new anchor system is made by attaching four steel sticks to the tip of anchor end. So the field test results showed that the pullout resistance capacity of the wedge-shaped ground anchor was acceptable to elastic displacement range.

  • Dissolution behavior of complex carbonitrides in a Nb-Ti-V microalloyed steel was quantitatively examined by electrical resistivity, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and optical microscopy. The electrical resistivity increased with solution treatment temperature up to $1250^{\circ}C$ for a holding time of 15 min. But, an increasing rate of electrical resistivity with temperature was obviously decreased above $1150^{\circ}C$. As the solution treatment temperature increases, irregular shaped Nb-rich carbonitrides disappear and cuboidal Ti-rich carbonitrides are observed. Abnormal grain growth occurs above $1250^{\circ}C$ for a holding time of 15 min. The optimal solution treatment temperature of a Nb-Ti-V microalloyed steel was determined as $1200^{\circ}C$ for a holding time of 15 min.

  • A lateral load resisting system is a necessary structural element for the mid- to high-rise modular buildings and concrete cores are known as the most typical lateral load resisting systems in 10- to 20-story modular buildings. It is difficult to construct a concrete core simultaneously with the installation and finishing work of modular units because concrete placed using wet methods might contaminate or destroy the modular unit. Therefore, we have developed a hybrid PC (precast concrete) panel construction method that can construct a concrete core together with the installation of modular units. The hybrid PC panel is a load-bearing element in which a pair of C-shaped beams are combined at the top and bottom of a concrete wall. Concrete cores can be constructed by dry method to connect the hybrid PC panels with bolts. In this study, the details and connection of hybrid PC panels are improved to have the lateral performance comparable to reinforced concrete structural walls and are verified through FE analysis.

  • In this study, the axial compressive behavior of novel quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns with different slenderness ratio was investigated, using the experimental and numerical analysis. The axial compressive capacity and failure modes of the columns were obtained and analyzed. The finite element models considering the geometry, material and contact nonlinearity were developed to simulate and analyze the structural behavior of the columns further. There was a great correlation between the numerical analyses and test results, which indicated that the finite element model was reasonable and accurate. Then influence of, slenderness ratio, flange width-to-thickness ratio and screw spacing on the mechanical behavior of the columns were studied, respectively. The tests and numerical results show that due to small slenderness ratio, the failure modes of the specimens are generally local buckling and distortional buckling. The axial compressive strength and stiffness of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns decrease with the increase of maximum slenderness ratio. When the screw spacing is ranging from 150mm to 450mm, the axial compressive strength and stiffness of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns change little. The axial compressive capacity of quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns increases with the decrease of flange width-thickness ratio. A modified effective length factor is proposed to quantify the axial compressive capacity of the quadruple C-channel built-up cold-formed steel columns with U-shaped track in the ends.

  • Hybrid precast concrete panel is a wall element that is able to quickly construct the core wall structure for moderate-rise modular buildings. Hybrid precast concrete panel has unique characteristics which is a pair of C-shaped steel beams combined at the top and bottom of a concrete wall, In this study, an improved anchorage detail for vertical rebar is proposed to ensure the lateral force resistance performance of hybrid precast concrete panel emulating monolithic concrete wall. Also, the structural performance of horizontal connection is investigated experimentally with the bolt spacing parameter. And the behavior of hybrid precast concrete panel with the improved detail is compared with the monolithic concrete wall tested in a previous study. Finally, the required thickness of C-shaped steel beam to eliminate or minimize the deformation in horizontal connection is calculated by prying action equation.

  • Metallic dampers are sacrificial devices (fuses) that dissipate significant energy during earthquakes while protecting other parts of structures from possible damage. In addition to numerous implementation opportunities of other base isolation systems, U-shaped dampers (UD) are one of the widely investigated and used devices in practice especially in Japan. The present study focuses on enhancing seismic performance of these types of dampers by changing their geometric properties. UDs with perforated (i.e. with holes) and/or nonparallel arms are developed for this purpose. For a better comparison, the criterion of equal material volume (or mass) has been utilized. Three dimensional finite element models of the new type of UDs are formed and investigated numerically under selected displacement histories. Based on the obtained hysteretic curves; dissipated energy intensities, effective stiffness ratios, reaction forces, effective damping ratios are evaluated in this parametric study. It is found that both damper types have merits in use of seismic applications and that the selection of the damper configuration is dependent on the design specific issues.

  • Fatigue test was conducted on a S45C steel using hour-glass shaped smooth tubular specimen under biaxial loading in order to investigate the crack formation and growth at room temperature. Three types of loading system, i.e fully reserved cyclic torsion without a superimposed static tension or compression, fully reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static tension and fully reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static compression were employed. The test results show that a superimposed static tensile mean stress reduced fatigue lifetime. however a superimposed static compressive mean stress increased fatigue lifetime. Experimental results indicated that cracks were initiated on planes of maximum shear strain with either a superimposed mean stresses or not. A biaxial mean stress had an effect on the direction which cracks nucleated and propagated at stage I (mode II).

  • Despite of decrease in shear and moment strengths, most steel structural designers use web openings in beams because of economical benefit and requirement. The purpose of this study is to suggest the method of reinforcement of H-shape steel beams with a rectangular web opening. If shear predominates over bending, it is necessary to consider all possible combinations of shear force and bending moment acting at the opening. In this paper, the ultimate strength and behavior of perforated beams have been investigated according to parameters (ratio of M/V, opening width within opening height ratio D/h, various reinforcing types A/B/C/D/M/N/W). The results of this study are as follows ; 1. Deformation of H-shape steel beams with a rectangular web opening was greatly affected by not only bending but also shear. 2. SB1-2/3 series have little difference in the reinforced efficiency, but SB1-2E/3E series have difference in the reinforced efficiency according to the reinforcement type. 3. Efficiency of SB1-2E/3E series is determined by reinforcing types, which RB1-2E-B/M/C and RB1-3E-M/D/C specimens have good efficient. Reinforcing type of perforated beams chooses efficient method according to ratio of M/V and D/h.

  • Effects of austenitizing, cryogenic treatment and tempering conditions on the phase change, microstructure and Vickers hardness value have been studied in STD11 steel for tool and die. The volume fraction of retained austenite increased with a rise in austenitizing temperature, while the volume fraction of eutectoid $M_7C_3$ carbides decreased. The retained austenite could be reduced by cryogenic treatment i.e., maintaining at $LN_2$ temperature ($-196^{\circ}C$) for 12hrs but a little amount of retained austenite did not transform to martensite further although holding time increased to 24 hrs or more. The microstructure of the quenched and then cryogenictreated specimen showed nano-sized and needle-shaped carbides in matrix due to the decomposition of martensite by tempering, but that of the one without cryogenic treatment still revealed retained austenite by tempering even at $500^{\circ}C$.
