  • Consolidation of amorphous powders is emerging as a route for synthesis of high strength composite materials. Diffusion processes necessary for consolidation are expected to be more rapid in amorphous state(SRO) than in the crystalline state(LRO). A new synthesis technique of exploiting polymeric ceramic precursors(polysilazane and polyborosilazane) is derived for Si$_3$N$_4$/SiC and boron-modified nanocomposites for extremely high temperature applications up to 200$0^{\circ}C$. The characterization methods include thermal analysis of DTA, and XRD, NMR, TEM, after pyrolysis, as a function of time and temperature.

  • SiC/SiC composites and monolithic SiC materials have been fabricated by the melt infiltration process, through the creation of crystallized SiC phase by the chemical reaction of C and Si. The reinforcing material used in this system was a braided Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber with double interphases of BN and SiC. The microstructures and the mechanical properties of RS-SiC based materials were investigated through means of SEM, TEM, EDS and three point bending test. The matrix morphology of RS-SiS/SiC composites was greatly composed of the SiC phases that the chemical composition of Si and C is different. The TEM analysis showed that the crystallized SiC phases were finely distributed in the matrix region of RS-SiC/SiC composites. RS-SiC/SiC composites also represented a good flexural strength and a high density, accompanying a pseudo failure behavior.

  • The N-inversion energies and nucleophilic ring-opening reactions of N-substituted aziridine compounds are investigated using B3LYP/6-31+$G^*$ methods, where substituents (R) on the nitrogen atom has been H (1), Me (2), Ph (3), Bn (4), CHMePh (5), $CO_2Me$ (6), COPh (7) and $SO_2Ph$ (8). The N-inversion energy with X group are decreased as the following order: R = CHMePh (17.06 kcal/mol) $\gt$ Me (16.97) $\gt$ Bn (16.70) $\gt$ H (16.64) $\gt$ $SO_2Ph$ (12.18) $\gt$ Ph (8.91) $\gt$ COPh (5.75) $\gt$ $CO_2Me$ (5.48). For reactivity of the ring opening toward cyanide ion, the aziridine 6 (R=$CO_2Me$) is shown to be the most reactive one. During the ring opening of aziridine 6 by CN$^{\ominus}$, the torsional OCNC angle becomes near to $180^{\circ}$, where the geometry allows for the effective incorporation of electrons of the nitrogen atom to the C=O bond. It would be a possible driving force for nucleophilic ring opening reaction as well as decreasing the N-inversion energy barrier. Regarding to the regioselectivity, the orientation of nucleophile in ring opening reaction appears to be different in the case of 9 and 10. The results are discussed in terms of steric/electronic effect of the $C_2$-substituents.

  • Thermal stability of exo-tetrahydrodicyclopentadiene (exo-THDCP) were investigated in a batch-type reactor perfectly coated with quartz. The 1 ml liquid product, which was a sufficiently small amount so as not to affect the reaction pressure, was sampled at 90 min intervals during the reaction and determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to measure thermal decomposition products of exo-THDCP and specify mechanism for additives (thermal stabilizer). Hydrogen donors (thermal stabilizer) such as 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline (THQ), benzyl alcohol (BnOH) increased thermal stability of exo-THDCP. These materials donated hydrogen to radical of exo-THDCP produced after initiation of exo-THDCP to decrease activity of primary products of exo-THDCP.

  • In order to refine the grain size of Mg-Zn alloy 0.5 to 6wt.%Cu or Si elements were added. Alloy ingot was made under vacuum atmosphere of 4 ${\times}$ 10$\^$-4/ Torr in the quartz tube coated by BN. Grain size and hardness were measured after solution treatment for 8 hours at 435$^{\circ}C$. Optimal condition for grain size refining effect was obtained at the minimum composition of 2wt.%Cu or 1.5wt.%Si addition to Mg-6wt%Zn alloy. Age hardening behavior was experimented at the optimal compositions of the Mg-6wt.%Zn, Mg-6wt.% Zn-2wt.%Cu and Mg-6wt.% Zn-1.5wt.%Si. The hardness increment due to fine grain size was higher at the Mg-Zn-Cu alloy system, but that due to age hardening was higher at the Mg-Zn-Si alloy system.

  • As Light-Emitting Diodes(LEDs) continue to advance in performance, their application in automotive lamps is increasing. Automotive LEDs utilize light guides not only for aesthetics but also to control light quantity and direction. Light guides employ patterns of a few hundred micrometers(㎛) to regulate the light, and the surface roughness(Ra) of these patterns can reach tens of nanometers(nm). Given that these light guides are produced through injection molding, mold processing technology with high surface quality micro-patterns is required. This study serves as a preliminary investigation into the development of high surface quality micro-pattern processing technology. It examines the surface roughness of the workpiece based on the cutting direction of the pattern and the cutting fluid type when cutting micro-patterns on STAVAX steel using cubic Boron Nitride(cBN) tools. The experiments involved machining a step-shaped micro-pattern with a height of 60 ㎛ and a pitch of 400 ㎛ in a 22×22 mm area under identical cutting conditions, with only the cutting direction and cutting fluid type being varied. The machining results of four cases were compared, encompassing two cases of cutting direction(parallel to the pattern, orthogonal to the pattern) and two cases of cutting fluid type (flood, mist). Consequently, the Ra value was found to be the highest(Ra 128.33 nm) when machining with the flood type in parallel to the pattern, while it was the lowest(Ra 95.22 nm) when machining with the mist type orthogonal to the pattern. These findings confirm that there is a difference of up to 25.8 % in the Ra value depending on the cutting direction and cutting fluid type.

  • This paper describes the fabrication and characteristics of Schottky micro hydrogen sensors for high temperatures by using polycrystalline(poly) 3C - SiC thin film grown on Si substrates with thermal oxide layer using APCVD. Pd/poiy 3C-SiC Schottky diodes were made and evaluated by I-V and C-V measurements. Electric current density and barrier height voltage were $2\times10^{-3}\;A/cm^2$ and 0.58 eV, respectively. These devices could operate stably at about $400^{\circ}C$. According to $H_2$ concentrations, their barrier height($\Phi_{Bn}$) were changed 0.587 eV, 0.579 eV, 0.572 eV and 0.569 eV, respectively. the current was increased. Characteristics of implemented sensors have been investigated in terms of sensitivity, linearity of response, response rate and response time. Therefore, from these results, Pd/poly 3C-SiC Schottky devices have very high potential for high temperature chemical sensor applications.

  • In actual manufacturing industries, process capability analysis often entails characterizing or assessing processes or products based on more than one engineering specification or quality characteristic. Since these characteristics are related, it is a risky undertaking to represent variation of even a univariate characteristic by a single index. Therefore, the desirability of using vector-valued process capability index(PCI) arises quite naturally. In this paper, some vector-valued ${PCI}_p$ ${C}_p$=(${C}_{px}$, ${C}_{py}$),${C}_{pk}$=(${C}_{pkx}$, ${C}_{pky}$) and ${C}_{pm}$=(${C}_{pmx}$, ${C}_{pmy}$) considering univariate PCIs ${C}_p$,${C}_{pk}$ and ${C}_{pm}$ are studied. First, we propose some asymptotic confidence regions of our vector-valued PCIs with bootstrap. And we examine the performance of asymptotic confidence regions of our vector-valued PCIs ${C}_p$ and ${C}_{pk}$ under the assumption of bivariate normal distribution BN($\mu_{x}$, $\mu_{y}$, $\sigma_{x}^{2}$, $\sigma_{y}^{2}$, $\rho$) and bivariate chi-square distribution Bivariate $x^2$(5,5,$\rho$).

  • Al2O3/SiC hybrid-composite has been fabricated by the conventional powder process. The addition of $\alpha$-Al2O3 as seed particles in the transformation of ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 to $\alpha$-Al2O3 provided a homogeneity of the microstructure. The grain growth of Al2O3 are significantly surpressed by the addition of nano-size SiC particles. Dislocation were produced due to the difference of thermal expansion coefficient between Al2O3 and SiC and piled up on SiC particles in Al2O3 matrix, resulting in transgranular fracture. The high fracture strength of the composite was contributed to the grain refinement and the transgranular fracture mode. The addition of SiC platelets to Al2O3/SiC nano-composite decreased the fracture strength, but increased the fracture toughness. Coated SiC platelets with nitrides such as BN and Si3N4 enhanced fracture toughness much more than non-coated SiC platelets by enhancing crack deflection.

  • Hexagonal boron nitride was synthesized from boron oxide and sodium amide in ammonia gas stream. The reaction mechanisms and characteristics of as synthesized boron nitride was investigated by means of TG, DTA, IR, XRD, SEM and PSA. The results are ; 1) hexagonal boron nitride was synthesized from reactions at temperatures above 40$0^{\circ}C$ 2) Sodium metaborate was present as by-product after reaction so that the reaction mechanism is reduced as follows : 2B2O3+3NaNH2longrightarrowBN+3NaBO2+2NH3. 3) boron nitride obtained at the reaction temperature below 40$0^{\circ}C$ is found to have random layer strudcture but the structure transits to ordered layer structure rapidly with increasing reaction temperature, showing separation of (101) differaction line from (10)band in XRD pattern of the reaction product at 50$0^{\circ}C$.
