Synthesis and Morphological Transformation of NaA Zeolite Crystals at High Temperature

  • Well-shaped NaA zeolite cubic crystals of a large size of $5-7{\mu}m$ were synthesized by a hydrothermal method in a mother solution having a $3.55Na_2O:Al_2O_3:1.6SiO_2:593\~2000H_2O$ composition. Thermal treatment of NaA zeolite crystals resulted in the formation of a crystalline phase of $NaAlSiO_4-Camegeite$ between 800 and $900^{\circ}C$. Even at $1000^{\circ}C,\;NaAlSiO_4$ phase was found as a major product. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and DTA/TGA and BET analyses were used to characterize the initial materials and the obtained products after various heat treatments.

  • Influences of crystallization time and $H_2O/Al_2O_3$ ratio of the reaction mixtures on the synthesis of AlPO$_4$-5 molecular sieve have been studied by X-ray powder diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and solid state $^{27}$Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) techniques. The degree of crystallinity of AlPO$_4$-5 follows a sigmoid pattem as crystallization time increases. The induction period is shorter than 1 h when the crystallization process is carried out at 150$^{\circ}$C. The conversion of reactants to product, AlPO$_4$-5, can be clearly observed, and all of the determined physical properties change abruptly after about 2 h. It is found that increase in $H_2O/Al_2O_3$ ratio of the reaction mixtures not only changes the crystal morphology from aggregates to hexagonal single crystals, but also results in the formation of longer AlPO$_4$-5 crystals.

  • A new process for the production of high purity ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ from ammonium aluminium sulfate solution abtained through the sulfation of low grade bauxite ore with $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, and leaching of the sulfated product was investigated. This process is consisted of solvent extraction for Fe component removal from ammonium aluminum sulfate solution and homogeneous precipitation of Al containing precipitate from the refined ammonium aluminium sulfate solution by using urea as precipitator. The optimum conditions of solvent extraction with Alamine 336 as extractant were shaking time of 4min, organic phase ratio to aqueous phase of 0.25. The types of precipitation products from this precipitation were amorphous alumina gel, pseudo-boehmite and crystalline boehmite in the lower temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, in the range from $125^{\circ}C$ to $150^{\circ}C$, and above $150^{\circ}C$, respectively. And also amorphous alumina gel hydrate in $1000^{\circ}C$ and crystalline boehmite in $1250^{\circ}C$ were tranfered to ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, respectively. This alumina was identified as ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ of purity 99.7%.

  • Alumina($Al_2O_3$) and Al 6061 were brazed by using Al-12wt% Si filler metal in a high vacuum environment. The interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints were investigated. The results obtained were as follows. (1) The maximum tensile strength of 54Mpa was acquired at the processing conditions of high vacuum ($3{\times}10^{-6}Torr$), $620^{\circ}C$ and 10min, but this condition will not be used in the industrial area due to high evaporation of Al alloy composition. (2) Reaction products for holding time and brazing temperature worked as stress relieve layer and the fractures after the mechanical properties test were occurred to the ceramic side or reaction layer. (3) The glancing angle X-ray diffraction analysis for the reaction product of $Al_2O_3/Al$ 6061 were processed. the joint strengths were low due to existed $Al_2Si_5\;and\;SiO_2$.

Synthesis of Si-Al Carbonates from Kaolin and Sintering Characteristics by Reaction Bonding Si3N4 (카올린으로부터 Si-Al 탄화물의 합성 및 Si$_3$N$_4$ 결합 소결 특성)

  • In this study, Kaolin was carbonized at 1300~175$0^{\circ}C$ and its constituent mineral change was investigated. Carbonized kaolin at 1$650^{\circ}C$ was mixed with metallic silicon, formed and nitrified at 135$0^{\circ}C$ in N2-NH3 atmosphere. Properties of this product such as porosity, bulk density, MOR, nitrization rate and oxidation resistence were measured, and its mineralogical changes were investigated by XRD. The results were as follows; 1) $\beta$-SiC was initially synthesized at 150$0^{\circ}C$, and its amount was continuously increased with reaction temperature to 1$700^{\circ}C$. 2) At 1$600^{\circ}C$, mullite was rapidly decomposed and the amounts of $\beta$-SiC and $\alpha$-Al2O3 were increased simultaneously. 3) By adding alkali to kaolin, the decomposition temperature of mullite was dropped approximately 10$0^{\circ}C$, but the amount of $\alpha$-SiC was increased. 4) The highest values of their nitrization rate and MOR were obtained at the specimen of 35 wt% metallic silicon in nitrization reaction. 5) It seems that increment of $\alpha$-Si3N4 and $\alpha$-Al2O3 phase during nitrization was due to the decomposition of Al4SiC4 existed in carbonized kaolin. 6) Si3N4 bonded SiC-Al2O3 composite were fabricated from kaolin at relatively low temperature (135$0^{\circ}C$).

  • The effect of alloying elements of Ag-Cu-Zr-X brazing alloy on the microstructure and the bond strength of $Al_2O_3/Ni-Cr$ brazed steel joint was investigated. The reaction layer, $ZrO_2$ (a=5.146 ${\AA}$ , b=5.213 ${\AA}$ , c=5.311 ${\AA}$ )was formed at the interface of $Al_2O_3/Ni-Cr$ steel joint by the redox reaction between alumina and Zr. The addition of An and Al to the Ag-Cu-Zr brazing alloy gave rise to changes in the thickness of the reaction product layer and the morphology of the brazement. Sn caused the segregation of Zr was decreased b Al the $ZrO_2$ layer formed at the Ag-Cu-Zr-Al alloy was thinner than that of $ZrO_2$ formed at the Ag-Cu-Zr-An alloy. The fracture shear strength was strongly dependent on the microstructure of the brazement. Brazing with Ag-Cu-Zr-Sn alloy resulted in a better bond strength than with Ag-Cu-Zr or Ag-Cu-Zr-Al alloy.

N2O Decomposition Characteristics of Dual Bed Mixed Metal Oxide Catalytic System using Partial Oxidation of Methane (메탄의 부분산화를 이용한 이중 혼합금속산화물 촉매 반응시스템의 N2O 분해 특성 연구)

  • $N_2O$ decomposition characteristics of dual bed mixed metal oxide catalytic system was investigated. The partial oxidation of methane at first reactor of dual bed catalytic system was performed over Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) catalyst under the optimized condition of $8,000h^{-1}$ GHSV, gas ratio ($CH_4:O_2=5:1$) at $500^{\circ}C$. In the dual bed system investigated herein, the second catalyst bed was employed for the $N_2O$ decomposition using product of partial oxidation of methane at first bed. An excellent $N_2O$ conversion activity even at lower temperature ($<250^{\circ}C$) was obtained with Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) or Co-Rh-Zr-Al (1/0.2/0.3/1) catalyst by combining Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) hydrotalcite catalyst for the partial oxidation of methane in a dual-bed system. The $N_2O$ conversion activity is drastically reduced in the presence of oxygen in second bed of a dual-bed system over Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) catalyst at $300^{\circ}C$.

  • [ $M/Al_2O_3$ ] (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) catalysts supported on commercial alumina ($Al_2O_3$) were prepared by an impregnation method, and were applied to the hydrogen production by auto-thermal reforming of ethanol. It was revealed that each catalyst retained its own metallic phase and product distribution strongly depended on the identity of active metal. Among the catalysts prepared, $Ni/Al_2O_3$ and $Co/Al_2O_3$ showed the best catalytic performance in the auto-thermal reforming of ethanol. However, the reaction mechanisms over these two catalysts were different. Ni/Al_2O_3 catalyst showed 100% ethanol conversion at $500^{\circ}C$, but it exhibited a rapid decrease in hydrogen selectivity. Although $Co/Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed an excellent performance in hydrogen selectivity, on the other hand, no significant improvement in hydrogen yield was observed due to the low ethanol conversion over the catalyst.

  • Birnessite (birnessite, $7{\AA}$ manganate, ${\delta}-MnO_2$) is a major mineral comprising manganese nodule. Various synthetic methods have been studied and evaluated because it can be used as an ion exchange agent and a battery recharging material. However, it is difficult to obtain a single birnessite phase because it does not have a stoichiometric chemical composition. Feitknechtite (${\beta}-MnOOH$) is formed as an intermediate product during birnessite synthesis and in this study, the transition of this phase to birnessite was compared by using XRD and SEM. Two different methods, Feng et al. (2004) and Luo et al. (1998), based on redox reaction were used. It was possible to obtain the impurity-free birnessite for the sample aged 60 days at $27^{\circ}C$ by Feng et al. (2004) method and 3 days at $60^{\circ}C$ by Luo et al. (1998) method. The phase transition rate of the feitknechtite phase was slower in the case of $Mg^{2+}$ doped birnessite which was synthesized by Luo et al. (1998) method, and almost single phase almost single phase birnessite was identified at high temperature. Crystal surface and morphology also confirmed the difference between the samples synthesized by two methods.

Steam Reforming of Toluene over Ni/Ru-K/Al2O3 Catalyst (Ni/Ru-K/Al2O3 촉매를 이용한 톨루엔 수증기 개질)

  • The catalytic steam reforming of toluene, a major component of biomass tar, was studied using several catalysts at various temperatures $400-800^{\circ}C$, kind of metal, and metal loading content. Ru and K promoted Ni-base catalyst were prepared, and used for steam reforming of toluene with steam/toluene molar ratio of 25. Concentration of toluene in reactant flow is $30g/Nm^3$ that is usual content of tar from biomass gasifier. The result from experiments showed that $H_2$ content in product gas and toluene conversion increased with temperature. Where in high temperature range, CO and $CO_2$ content in product gas were affected mainly by Boudouard reaction. Ni/Ru-K(3wt%)/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed best performance on steam reforming of toluene than used catalysts in this study at whole temperature. Catalysts have been characterized by XRD, TG. XRD analysis displayed that Ni particle size on Ni/Ru-K (3wt%)/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was 29.4nm. Activation energy of Ni/Ru-K (3wt%)/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was calculated 36.8kJ/mol by Arrhenius plot.
