We previously reported the hepato-protective effect of butanol soluble fraction of methanolic extract of Carthamus tinctorius L. Semen on carbon tetrachloride induced hepatotoxicity. In this study, the active component from the butanol soluble fraction was isolated by column chromatographic separation using Silica gel and Sephadex LH -20 and identified by spectroscopic methods such as Mass, $^1$H - NMR and $\^$13/C-NMR. The hepato-protective effect of the isolated active component on the CCl$_4$-induced liver damaged rats has been evaluated by performing blood chemical analysis and biotransformational enzyme analysis.
Small angle light scattering (SALS) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) have been used to investigate the light scattering patterns with time evolved during water vapor quenching (relative humidity of 53 (${\pm}3)%$ at $26^{\circ}C$ of polysulfone (PSf)/NMP/Alcohol and chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC)/THF/Alcohol, respective1y. Time dependence of the position of the light scattering maximum was observed at PSf dope solutions, confirming spinodal decomposition (SD), while CPVC dope solutions showed a decreased scattered light intensity with an increased q-value, indicating nucleation & growth (NG). For the each system, domain growth rate in the intermediate and late stage of phase separation decreased with increasing the number of carbon of alcohol used as additive (non-solvent). Also, in the early stage for SD, the scattering intensity with time was in accordance with Cahn's linear theory of spinodal decomposition, regardless of types of non-solvent additive. Also, the size scales obtained by SALS were mutually compared to domain sizes gained by FE-SEM measurement. These observations of scattering pattern were much clearly observed for the 20PSf/70NMP/10n-butanol (w/w%) and agreed with the theoretical predictions for scattering patterns of each stage like the early, the intermediate, and the late stage of SD type phase separation. As the scattering maximum was observed at the larger angles (larger q) in the order of n-butanol > n-propanol > methanol > no alcohol, the pore size of final morphology decreased.
The antioxidant activity of the solvent fractions extracted from onion skin was examined. The antioxidant activity of methanol extract at the cencentration of 0.02% and 0.03% was stronger than that of mixed tocopherol. The antioxidant activity of the fractions of methanol extract increased in the order of butanol> ethyl acetate> ethyl ether> water fraction. The antioxidant activity of each fractions was strongly related with total phenol content and HDA. Further separation of butanol fraction by TLC yielded 6 fluorescent bands with Rf values of 0.20, 0.33, 0.49, 0.60 and 0.94. The total phenol content and HDA of fluorescent band, Rf 0.96, were remarkable higher than those of the other band and exhibited a strong UV absorption at 255 nm and 317 nm, which would be specifically produced by flavonol. Spectral analyses indicated that the major antioxidant component was quercetin aglycone (3,3',4',5,7-pentahydroxyflavone).

To better understand the exact nature of the major toxic compound responsible for phytotoxicity of sorghum stem, the most toxic compound from the stem extract was isolated by rapid chromatography and subsequently purified by thin-layer chromatography(TLC) and high pressure liquid chromatography(HPLC). Of the eight fractions isolated by rapid chromatography, the fraction with solvent combinations of butanol (8) : acetic acid (1) : water (1) had the highest toxicity. Further separation of the fraction by TLC in a solvent mixture of butanol (24) : acetic acid (16.4) : water (7) : propanol (1) showed that the spot with an $R_f$ 0.71 had one major peak with retention time of 20.40 minutes. Upon subjecting gas chromatography and the HPLC fraction to the mass spectrometry, the toxic compound is probably one of the four compounds ; 1-methyl-1-(2-propynyl)-hydrazine, 1-aziridineethanol, 5-chloro-2-pentanone, and 2-(methylseleno)-ethanamine.
The critical micelle concentrations($CMC^*$) of the mixed surfactant systems of cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride(CPC) and nonionic surfactant Triton X-100(TX-100) in aqueous solutions of salts(KCl and $Na_2CO_3$) and isomeric butanols(tert-butanol, iso-butanol and n-butanol) were determined by UV spectroscopy method. The various thermodynamic values in aqueous solutions of salts and isomeric butanols were compared with the values in pure water, calculated by means of the equation derived from the pseudo-phase separation model. Thermodynamic parameters($X_1$, $\beta$, ${\gamma}i$, $ai^M$, $C_i$ and ${\Delta}H_{mix}$) were found to have great effects of salts and isomeric butanols on the mixed micellization of CPC/TX-100 mixtures, and also in good agreements with the nonideal mixed micelle model. They showed all negative deviations from the ideal mixed micellar behavior.
Recently, bio-butanol is being promoted as environmentally friendly sustainable energy. However, some problems are still obstacle for commercialization of bio-butanol: the development of cheap biomass and enhancement of fermentation ratio and preparation of economical separation process for fermented products. In the conventional ABE biobutanol fermentation process, organic acids with acetone, butanol, and ethanol are produced. Therefore, it is necessary to study phase equilibrium data and mixture properties for the design and operation of separation process. However, there is lack of design data for organic acids except acetic acid contained system. In this study, therefore, binary solid-liquid equilibria (SLE) and mixture properties: the excess molar volumes ($V^E$), molar refraction deviation (${\Delta}R$) and deviation of viscosity (${\Delta}v$) at 298.15 for $C_3-C_6$ organic acid were reported. The experimental SLE data were correlated with the NRTL and UNIQUAC activity coefficient model with less than 0.5 K of root mean square deviation (RMSD). In addition, $V^E$, ${\Delta}R$ and ${\Delta}v$ for the same binary systems were satisfactorily fitted using the Redlich-Kister polynomial with less than ca. 0.004 standard deviation.
From the chloroform and n-butanol extracts of Selaginella tamariscina, three biflavonoids were isolated by chromatographic separation. Structures of these compounds were determined as cryptomerin B, amentoflavone and isocryptomerin by spectroscopic analysis, and amentoflavone was further identified by comparison with the authentic sample. This is the first report of isolation of cryptomerin B from Selaginellaceae.
Alcohol concentration via pervaporation process was performed by using commercial PDMS(polydimethylsiloxane) composite membrane and plasma treated PP(polypropylene) membranes. Effects of operating parameters of pcrvaporation process were examined. With the increase of butanol concentration in the feed, flux and selectivity increased due to the greater affinity of butanol with PDMS than that of water. As the operating temperature increased, free volume as well as the solubilities and diffusivities of alcohol and water increased to result in the greater flux and less selectivity of the membrane. As solubility parameter difference between alcohol and PDMS membrane decreased, high flux and good selectivity were obtained. When PP membrane was plasma treated with methanol, it has 6 times greater flux than PDMS membrane with equivalent separation factor. With the increase of plasma treatment time, flux and selectivity were enhanced. However, excess treatment time caused pore blocking to result in the flux decrease.
In this paper, polymer composite membranes and ceramic composite membranes were prepared in order to compare differences in pervaporation performances relative to the support layers. PVDF was used for the polymer support layers, and $a-Al_2O_3$ was used for the ceramic support layers. For active layer was coated for PDMS, which is a rubbery polymer. The characterization of membranes were analysed by SEM, contact angle, and XPS. We studied performances relative to the composite membrane support layers in the ABE mixture solutions. The results of the pervaporation, the flux of the ceramic composite membrane was shown to be $250.87g/m^2h$, which was higher than that of polymer composite membranes, at $195.64g/m^2h$. However, it was determined that the separation factor of the polymer composite membranes was 31.98 which were higher than that of the ceramic composite membranes, at 20.66.
This study to elucidate concentrations of impurities such as methanol and fusel oil formed during fermentation process among the different materials and has been applied technical seperation for processing improvement by continuous distillation of super-allospas type. Methanol was formed high concentrations of cutting dried sweet potato and tapioca in order among the different materials during fermentation process. n-Propanol oil was formed high concentration of rice, cutting dried sweet potato, corn, naked barley and tapioca in order among the those materials. I-Buthanol showed high concentration of tapioca, corn, rice, cutting dried sweet potato and naked barley in order and isoamyl-alcohol showed high concentration of tapioca, rice, cutting dried sweet potato, corn and naked barley in order. Using the continuous distillation of super-allospas type, the following are collection ratios of n-propanol, iso-butanol, n-butanol and iso-amylalcohol: 37.9%, 28.6%, 37.4%, and 56.1% when 78.25% (v/v), 68.54% (viv), 50.0% (viv), and 50.0% (v/v) alcohol are used, respectively. Fusel oil and bad alcohol put into the recovery column and then seperated directly by side cut of fusel oil partially from plate of tower bottom after concentration again. Extra impurities seperated by fusel oil seperator when 20 % (v/v) alcohol adjusted with water.
