A Study on the Reduction of Harmful Compound in Cigarette Smoke [Part II] -Influence of solvont extraction- (담배 연기중(煙氣中)의 유해물감소(有害物減少)에 관한 연구(硏究)[제이보(第二報)] -용매추출(溶妹抽出)의 영향(影響)-)

  • The solvent extracting of the tobacco has been carried out in order to find out any effects for the removal and/or reduction of nicotine from tobacco without affecting the tobacco flavor. We have now completed the physico-chemical characterization of the solvent untreated/treated tobaccos and 2) the contents of the tar and nicotine in the smoke. The results obtained ate like followings; 1. 3% alcohol extraction reduced the total nitrogen content for the Bright by 36.4%. However, it could not reduce the sugar content. 2. Nicotine content in tobacco leaves was inversely proportional to the dipping time Essentially same results were obtained in anacidic solution and even in a solution containing both alkali and acid. 3. Derivative thermogravimetric(DTG) curves indicated test extraction was effective by removing tobacco leaf components which could decompose or volatilize between the temperature of $150^{\circ}C\;and\;350^{\circ}C$. 4. 3% alcohol extracted leaf have the substantial improvements as following; (1) bulk filling power of 10% and 24% for Burley and Bright tobacco, respectively, (2) combustibility shortening of about 3 minute and 2 minute for Burley and Bright tobaccos, respectively, (3) reduction ratio(%) of nicotine was found to be shout 61.5% and 54.5% for Burley and Bright tobacco, respectively, (4) reduction ratio (%) of tar was obtained to he about 25% and 15% for Burley and Bright tobacco, respectively.

Influences of Nitrogen and Potassium Rates on Yield and Quality of Cured Leaf in Burley Tobacco (질소 및 가리 시용량이 버어리종 잎담배의 수량 및 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • A field experiment was conducted to find out the effects of nitrogen and potassium rates on the growing characters, yield and quality of burley tobacco (1988 : Burley 21, 1989: Burley 21 and KB101) during successive two years. The effect of added nitrogen fertilizer on the growth characters at topping stage was different according to growing years. Potassium rate had no effect on the growth characters. The effects of nitrogen and potassium rates on the nitrogen conteut of leaf during growth stage were great, while the effects on the potassium content were not large, relatively. As compared with Burley 21, KB101 showed high yield, and the productivity in nitrogen-reduced condition was high. The yield and quality were increased when nitrogen applied to 22.75kg/l0a, but the yield was not increased and the quality was decreased when nitrogen applied above 22.75kg/l0a. Neither potassium rate nor potassium/nitrogen application ratio had effects on the yield and quality, while the quality was somewhat decreased when potassium/nitrogen ratio was small. When the nitrogen fertilizer being applied above 22.75kg/l0a, there were no advantageous effects on the yield and quality, It is sufficient that the potassium application is about 35.0kg/l0a, and the scheme of reducing of potassium rate may be considerable.

Moisture Sorption and Desorption Isotherms of Various Leaf Tobaccos (잎담배의 흡습 및 탈습에 관한 연구)

  • The moisture sorption and desorption isotherms of various tobaccos were obtained over a relative humidity range from 0 to 90% at $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$. The hysteresis effect, constant and rate of moisture sorption and desorption, monomolecular-layer moisture content, and specific surface area were analyzed from the obtained data. The moisture sorption and desorption isotherms showed a different characteristics for different tobacco varieties. At a lower humidity range below 50% RH, Burley tobacco had higher moisture sorption and desorption figures than Hicks and Basma, while, at a higher humidity range above 50% RH, Hicks had higher values than the others. The hysteresis effect of tobacco were greater in an intermediate humidity range (40-70% RN), and Basma showed a greater effect than the others. The sorption and desorption constant (K) increased with temperature, but decreased with RH, and Burley tobacco had larger K values, while Hicks had smaller K values than others. The sorption and desorption rate of Burley tobacco were greater than the other tobaccos. The monomolecular-layer moisture was 27.8 and 51.4mg/g, and the specific surface was 101 and $186m^2/g$, for Basma and Burley, respectively.

  • The nitrogen contents of some forms in Burley tobacco leaf cultivated in Yaesan, Mokpo and Namwon district were investigated. The rate of each form in total nitrogen contents were as follows ; Protein form nitrogen 30~33 % Nitrate form nitrogen 10~123% Alkaloid form nitrogen 8~16 % Ammonia form nitrogen 6~9% Amide form nitrogen 2~ 3% Other form nitrogen 26~44 % The order of nitrate form nitrogen content on the nitrogen of each tobacco cultivated in three area was Yaesan > Namwon > Mokpo, but that of alkaloid form nitrogen was reverse order of nitrate form nitrogen. As for Quality ( grade ), the orders of alkaloid and ammonia form nitrogen content on total nitrogen were H5> 3> 1> L 1> 3> 5, but that of nitrate form nitrogen was reversed.

Studies on the Analysis of Tobacco Leaf Alkaloids (잎담배 Alkaloid분석에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to develop the method of alkaloids analysis and investigate the kinds and contents of alkaloids in flue-cured, burley and oriental tobacco leaves using developed analytical method. The developed analytical method of alkaloids was as followed : Tobacco sample was treated with acid(pH 2∼3) and extracted with chloroform to remove chemical components except alkaloids. Sample solution was treated with alkali(pH 12∼ 13) and was extracted with chloroform to obtain alkaloids from sample solution. After extraction of alkaloids from tobacco leaves, alkaloids were separated and identified by GC, GC/MS using SE-54 fused silica capillary column. Nicotine, nornicotine, myosmine, 9-nicotyline, anabasine, anatabine, 2, 3-bipyridyl, cotinine, formyl nornicotine, acetyl nornicotine and formal anatabine were isolated and identified from the extracts of tobacco leaves. The contents of alkaloids were burley > flue-cured > oriental tobacco leaves, but oriental tobacco leaves were higher nornicotine, cotinine, formyl nornicotine and acetyl nornicotine contents than those of flue-cured tobacco leaves. The burley tobacco harvested in Korea was higher nornicotine contents by 2-6 times in the portions of cutter, leaf and tips position than that of burley tobacco(B3F) harvested in V. S. A.

Changes in physico-chemical properties of expanded tobacco leaves by $CO_2$ process according to the storage periods (저장기간에 따른 $CO_2$ 팽화처리 원료잎담배의 이화학적 특성 변화)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of storage period on the physico-chemical properties of tobacco leaves expanded by $CO_2$. The flue-cured and burley tobacco leaves produced from 1996 to 1999 were processed, and stored for that year or 3 years in processing plant. As compared with 1996 crop, the expanded rate of flue-cured tobacco leaves in 1999 crop was higher approximately 18%, while that of burley was higher about 10%. The filling capacity of cigarettes was decreased as storage time became shorter, but the combustibility was improved. The rate of large particles (over 3.36mm) of expanded tobacco showed decreasing tendency as the storage period became longer. The change rate of chemical contents in tobacco leaves between before and after expansion had no significant difference among corp years. The tar and CO contents of cigarettes smoke were reduced in the case of flue-cured tobacco leaves as storage time became shorter, while they were slightly increased in the case of burley tobacco leaves. The ammonia content of burley leaves was decreased remarkably in 1996 and 1999 crop.

EFFECT OF TWO PVY STRAINS ON YIELD AND CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS OF TOBACCO PLANT (두가지 계통의 PVY가 잎담배 수량 및 내용성분에 미치는 영향)

  • Effect of the two PVY strains(PVY-VB and PVY-VN) on yield and chemical constituents of tobacco plants was determined in roar. NC2326 and Burley 21. The virus was inoculated 6 and 8 weeks after transplanting, respectively. The strains and time of inoculation were most critical factors for yield reduction. The greatest reduction was caused by the necrotic strain (PVY-VN) inoculated 6 weeks after transplanting, accounting for the loss of 40% in var. NC2326 and of 45% in var.. Burley21. When inoculated 8 weeks after transplanting with the necrotic strain, only 17% reduction was recorded in roar. Burley21, but no reduction occurred in roar. NC2326. Generally less reduction was caused by the PVY-VB strain, ranging 12-16% depending on the time of inoculation and/or variety. Compared to healthy tobacco, PVY infected tobacco contained higher concentrations of total nitrogen, protein nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and lower total sugar in cured leaf of roar. NC2326. Total alkaloid, P, Mg, Ca, and K levels were not altered. In var. Burley21, protein nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen increased, but other chemical components were not changed. Necrotic strain-infected tobacco with a severe symptom had higher nitrogen than did mild strain-infected tobacco.

  • The present study was carried out to obtain some basic informations of the breeding of tobacco varieties. Genetically divergent 8 varieties, 3 flue-cured, 2 burley and 3 sun-cured tobaccos, were used in half diallel cross. In order to analyze the heterosis, combining abilities, modes of inheritance and correlations for some agronomic and chemical characters, 8 parents and 28 $F_2$ were tested. The results obtained were summarized as follows: The percentages of heterosis for yield, stem diameter, internode length and total sugar content in $F_2$ hybrid were positive , where-as those for the other characters were negative. Yield had significant positive genotypic and phenotypic correlations with plant height, days to flower, leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf width and leaf shape index (Leaf length/leaf width). General (GCA) and specific combining abilities (SCA) for all characters of $F_2$ hybrid were significant. In the effect of GCA, yield was greater in combinations of Bulgaria and Xanthi, days to flower and leaves per plant were those of Burley 21 and Va 528, leaf length and width were those of Coker 139, respectively. In the effect of SCA, the major part of characters were greater than those of others in the combinations of Burley 21, Va 528, Hicks.

Effect of Super Heated Steam Treatment on Physical Property and Smoke Component of Burley Cut Tobacco (과열증기처리에 의한 Burley종 각초의 물리성 및 연기성분 변화에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of super heated steam on the physical and chemical changes of burley cut tobacco. Total sugar, total alkaloid, ether extracts, crude ash, total nitrogen and pH for leaf chemical constituents were analyzed. Filling power and fineness index for physical properties, and carbonyl compounds, phenol compounds, amonia, pH, hydrogen cyanide nicotine, carbon monoxide, total volatile base and tar for smoke components were also analyzed. The cut tobacco treated with super heated steam showed significant decrease in total sugar and total alkaloid. The filling power of the sample treated with the super heated steam system was increased abruptly when heated at over 250℃. The fineness index showed similar tendency to that of common toast method. Super heated steam treatment slightly decreased carbonyl compounds, phenol compounds, hydrogen cyanide, nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar in the tobacco. Especially the decrease of ammonia was the most remarkable. The pH of smoke was a little different compared with that in the common toast. The sensory test results showed that, compared to the common conveyer moving system, the tobacco treated with super heated steam system brought out more roasted flavor, lowered impact, irritation, and sting, further improved aftertaste, and lowered bitterness. The super heated steam treatment method used in the studies is expected to give better filling power, mild taste and toasted odor of tobacco than that of the common method for toast treatment. Prediction of Sensory Property from Leaf Chemical Property in Burely Tobacco (버어리종 잎담배의 화학성분에 의한 관능 특성 예측)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the prediction of sensory property of smoke from the leaf chemical property and characterize leaf chemical components for the best tobacco taste's leaves in burley tobacco. For analytical and sensory evaluations, sixteen grades were used. The major leaf chemical components to predict the sensory property of smoke were ether extract for tobacco-like, chloride for impact and total nitrogen/nicotine for irritation. Within ${\pm}20\;%$ range of difference, the predictable probabilities of sensory property of smoke from the leaf chemical properties were 100 % for tobacco-like, impact and irritation. As a result of K-means cluster analysis on the basis of tobacco taste, the desirable leaf chemical component contents were $6.5{\sim}6.8\;%$ in ether extract, $0.25{\sim}0.30\;%$ in chloride and $1.26{\sim}1.54$ in total nitrogen/nicotine ratio. This study suggest that the some regression equations may be useful to predict the sensory components of tobacco smoke from a few selected leaf chemical properties in burley tobacco and to select the burley tobacco leaves for enhance the tobacco taste of cigarette.
