The treatment of city life wastes is headache problem. Now, only small portion of burnable wastes is burnt at modern process incinerators, the other large portion is buried in the soil by landfill method. The burnable wastes will be increased year by year. The dioxin, the cancer-causing agent, produced by incineration of wastes influences harmful effect to national human health. The new idea of burnable wastes treatment is using the city life wastes as auxiliary fuel of fluidizing bed combustion boiler of large scale coal-fired power plant. The dioxin-free treatment of burnable wastes is sucessfully achieved by burning the wastes, in flyash storm at fluidizing bed combustion boiler.
It is now common to find the wastes buried in the past during the excavation process of soil for large scale housing and land development. Without proper treatment of the wastes environmentally, the excavation process is no longer able to proceed, and an action plan should be provided to treat the wastes with environmental and economic viability. In the study, the relationship between the apparent density of the wastes and the volume conversion factor, which is the basis in the estimation of waste treatment cost was investigated. From 10 sampling points of a landfill site, wastes were sampled, analyzed for physical characteristics, and the apparent density of mixed and sorted waste was assessed. Applying the empirical formula, and the formula we suggested here, the volume conversion factors were compared with that measured directly in the field using dump truck and excavator. Obviously there was a close relationship among the volume conversion factors resulting from the empirical formula, the formula we suggested and that measured in the field.

There has been a steady increase in treatment of wastes buried in unplanned waste landfill situated in urban area and river side. This study was carried out to evaluate the geotechnical and environmental properties of soil sorted by classifier from wastes in unregulated landfill. The physical mechanical, and environmental properties of sorted soil were investigated for treatment of wastes and soil including landfill.

Recently, the amount of the construction and demolition wastes has rapidly increased due to increasing construction projects. In the past, most of the construction and demolition wastes were buried in the ground of thrown away. Illegally, without any treatment, so various harmful environmental pollution problems were occurred. In this study, the domestic data on the amount of the construction and demolition wastes and the disposal methods were collection and analysed. Specially, the recycling and management systems of the construction and asphalt concrete wastes were studied. A new technology and necessary policy for recycling were suggested. In general, the industrial wastes were produced in the particular place, and the amount and the characteristics of the wastes able to be estimated by the studies on the treatment technology. And the investment of the facilities for the industrial wastes have been made continuously. But little attention has been relatively given to the treatment technology. And system for the construction and demolition wastes for the political support and facilitation on the proper treatment and the recycling, the necessary of information exchange system and the manifest system for treatment of waste on commission were recommended, and also devised methods to develope and support the recycling industry. In the future, the subject of study is going to carry out analysis of economic and market in making products.

For the while, food wastes have been mainly gathered in a trash place in outskirt of Seoul to bury under the ground. Recently the residents near the area strongly refused to fetch those food wastes to their area because of the terribly bad smell. According to the statistic, the food wastes have around $30\%$ portion of total living wastes, which are more than other countries. Most of the food wastes have been simply buried or incinerated without deep consideration of resource recovery view. Such burying or incineration makes problem to the residents' life condition. So the first is to reduce as much as possible and the rest should be controlled to reuse as resources.

Plastic wastes have a negative impact on marine environments; however, they can be used as carbon sources and habitats by certain microbes. Microbes in the marine plastisphere can migrate worldwide through the ocean and cause serious environmental problems when they encounter suitable environments. Therefore, efforts to investigate the microbes inhabiting the marine plastisphere are increasing. In the present study, fungal strains were isolated from plastic wastes buried in Korean sea sands and mudflats and identified using molecular and morphological analyses. Five species were identified that were previously unrecorded from South Korea: Cladosporium funiculosum, Neosetophoma poaceicola, Neosetophoma rosigena, Parasarocladium gamsii, and Trichoderma fomiticola. Their molecular phylogenies and morphological characteristics are described in this study.

As a reinforced fabric, asbestos has been utilized as a fire-resistant material as it has a superior flexural stiffness and heat resistance up to $1500^{\circ}C$. However, due to its harmfulness, its use has been prohibited recently and the even the installed asbestos materials are being repaired or supplemented if there is a concern about flying. Asbestos is mainly used for construction panels as a reinforced fabric and coating materials to ensure the fire-resistance of steel frames. Asbestos was used as fire-resistant materials for steel frames until 1991 and then prohibited as Act on Industrial Safety and Health limits the concentration of asbestos in the air. Classified as a designated waste according to Act on Waste Control, asbestos must be buried if there is no possibility of flying (panel-type materials) or cement-solidified and then buried if there is a possibility of flying (spray coating material) In general, it is required that a new waste landfill include a certain landfill facility for designated waste, but in reality there is an absolute storage of landfill facilities for designated waste as they only install facilities of the size required by the regulations. This could result in the 2nd environmental pollution as they cannot process asbestos wastes which will be generated in large volume in the future. This study explores a method that melts asbestos wastes at $700^{\circ}C$ rather than cement-solidifying the waste asbestos from construction sites, especially asbestos-containing spray coating. The study results showed that there was no change in the composition and shape even though asbestos wastes was melted at $1300^{\circ}C$, but there was a change for the specimen which was process in advance for low temperature melting and then melt at $900^{\circ}C$.

Recently, coal ashes which are increasing annually are buried in ash ponds as industrial wastes. However, buried coal ashes can pollute ground water and ground due to leachate from coal ashes, which are serious environmental problem. Even though a lot of researches on recycling of coal ashes have been conducted, only 15% of coal ashes are recycled up to now. And those recycled coal ashes are not bottom ashes but fly ashes. So in this study, it was proved that Bottom Ash can be used as an alternative material to O.P.C(Ordinary Portland Cement) according to laboratory test results and test field construction. Also bottom ash is more economical and environmentally friendly than O.P.C.
Geophysical surveys(electrical resistivity, self-potential, seismic refraction, GPR) were conducted to investigate the physical properties of the subsurface, and to delineate the flow channel of leachate from a AMD(acid mine drainage), buried rock wastes and tailings, and drainage pipes at an abandoned mine(Kwangyang mine). Especially in rainy season the sites appear to be abundant in AMD leachate, characterized by electrical conductivities of 0.98-1.10 ms/S. Electrical resistivity sections indicate that the leachate flows running in two directions at southern part rise up through the narrow fracture zones at the central part and contaminates the surrounding soil and stream. Such schematic features at the anomalous zone are well correlated with negative peaks in self-potential data, the limited penetration depth in GPR data and low velocity zone in seismic refraction data. Shallow high-resistivity zone is associated with the buried rock wastes which cause the diffractions in GPR image. In addition, the events at depth of approximately 1-1.25 m in GPR sections must be the metal pipes through which AMD is drained off to the inner bay.
This study was initiated to identify groundwater quality and contamination at present in the 'A' section of Seoul Metropolitan Subway. Groundwater samples were collected at 21 boreholes along the 'A' section and appeared to show mainly $Ca-HCO_3$ type. In 20 samples, concentration of $SO_4$, Cd, Pb, Fe, Mn, Al, F and $NO_3-N$ were higher than those of Korean drinking water quality standards. From chemical data and saturation Indices, contaminant sources of individual chemical elements were inferred to be buried wastes and surface sediments over the study area. The result of factor analysis suggested that the pollution factor should account for about 47% of data variation.
