  • A carbon dioxide gas sensor was studied as a function of temperature and $CO_2$concentration in the Li$_2$ZrO$_3$ system. Lithium zirconate(Li$_2$ZrO$_3$) was synthesized by the heat-treatment of zirconia(ZrO$_2$)and Lithium carbonate(Li$_2$CO$_3$). The specimens were prepared both as bulk disk, 10mm in diameter and 1.0mm thickness, and thick films on an alumina substrate. Lithium zirconate readily responded to $CO_2$concentration from 0.1% to 100% in the range of 45$0^{\circ}C$ to $650^{\circ}C$. The sensitivity to $CO_2$ was dependent on the measuring temperature. Lithium zirconate(Li$_2$ZrO$_3$) decomposes into Li$_2$CO$_3$ and ZrO$_2$after the reaction with $CO_2$in the range of 45$0^{\circ}C$ to $650^{\circ}C$. Li$_2$CO$_3$ changes into Li$_2$O and $CO_2$ above $650^{\circ}C$. The material showed difficulty with reversibility and recovery. The optimum temperature for the highest sensitivity is around 55$0^{\circ}C$.

  • II-Ⅵ ZnO compound semiconductor thin films were grown on $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$(0001) single crystal substrate by radical beam assisted molecular beam epitaxy and the optical properties were investigated. Zn(6N) was evaporated using Knudsen cell and O radical was assisted at the partial pressure of 1$\times$10$^{4}$ Torr and radical beam source of 250-450 W RF power. In $\theta$-2$\theta$ x-ray diffraction analysis, ZnO thin film with 500 nm thickness showed only ZnO(0002)and ZnO(0004) peaks is believed to be well grown along c-axis orientation. Photoluminescence (PL) measurement using He-Cd ($\lambda$=325 nm) laser is obtained in the temperature range of 9 K-300 K. At 9 K and 300 K, only near band edge (NBE) is observed and the FWHM's of PL peak of the ZnO deposited at 450 RF power are 45 meV and 145 meV respectively. From no observation of any weak deep level peak even at room temperature PL, the ZnO grains are regarded to contain very low defect density and impurity to cause the deep-level defects. The peak position of free exciton showed slightly red-shift as temperature was increased, and from this result the binding energy of free exciton can be experimentally determined as much as $58\pm$0.5 meV, which is very closed to that of ZnO bulk. By van der Pauw 4-point probe measurement, the grown ZnO is proved to be n-type with the electron concentration($n_{e}$ ) $1.69$\times$10^{18}$$cm^3$, mobility($\mu$) $-12.3\textrm{cm}^2$/Vㆍs, and resistivity($\rho$) 0.30 $\Omega$$\cdot$cm.

  • For developing calcium supplement from the harmful marine organism starfish, the physiochemical property of the powdered starfish skeletal plate and the hydrolysis condition of the starfish digestive enzyme were studied. The optimal hydrolysis condition of the starfish digestive enzymes was at $55^{\circ}C$ for 12 h. The bulk densities of the powdered starfish skeletal plates of Asterias amurensis and Asterina pectinifera were $1.1{\pm}0.0$ and $1.2{\pm}0.0g/cm^3$, respectively. As for the median size, the values were 10.738 and $11.799{\mu}m$, respectively. According to the added concentration of sodium polyacrylate, the dispersibility rate of the powdered starfish skeletal plate was shown to be 6h at 0.0%, 3 days at 0.1%, 20 days at 0.2%, and until 30 days at 0.4%. The elementary composition of the powdered starfish skeletal plates from A. amurensis and A. pectinifera mainly consisted of calcium, and it formed 98.95 and 98.52% of the powdered starfish skeletal plates, respectively. The results of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that they were present in the form of $CaCO_3$. Based on these results, it is suggested that starfish skeletal plate can be utilized as a functional material for a calcium supplement.

  • The study was carried out to develop nursery soil for rice seedling of phyllite. First of all, physico-chemical properties of used phyllite in the study through the analysis for agricultural utilization evaluation are as following. Bulk density(BD) of phyllite was $1.31g/cm^3$ each other and porosity had 65% of entire pore size. Also, the water holding capacity(WHC) was 43% at 1/3bar pressure, which phyllite has high WHC. According to, the results the experiments for nursery soil were conducted by mixing the materials such as phyllite, zeolite and hill soil. The mixing ratios were 30, 50, and 70% for zeolite and hill soil into phyllite. These mixed materials were packed in a box by adding 0, 1 and 2g of N-fertilizer. At seedling test, there were increases in the growth of shoot and root of rice for phyllite to zeolite and phyllite to hill soil, respectively. On the other hand, the length of leaf increased with increasing application rate of phyllite, while length and a number of root increased with increasing application rate of hill soil. The growth in the plots of phyllite to zeolite and phyllite to hill soil was better than in control plot. Finally, phyllite plot had efficient results when it compared with others and the study used with phyllite will have to more research and effort for agricultural useful material.

  • For the cost down of polymer concrete, It is very important to reduce the use amount of polymer binder, which occupies most of the production cost of polymer concrete. Fly ash and atomizing reduction steel slag are spherical materials obtained from industrial by-products. Spherical atomizing reduction steel slag was manufactured using steel slag from reduction process of ladle furnace by atomizing technology. To investigate the physical properties of polymer concrete, polymer concrete specimens were prepared with the various proportions of polymer binder and replacement ratios of atomizing steel slag. Results showed that compressive and flexural strengths of the specimens were remarkably increased with the addition amount of polymer binder and the replacement ratios of atomizing steel slag. In the hot water resistance test, compressive strength, flexural strength, bulk density and average pore diameter decreased but total pore volume and pore diameter increased. We found that polymer concrete developed in this study reduced the amount of polymer binder by 18.2% compared to the conventional product because of the remarkable improvement of workability of polymer concrete using spherical fly ash and atomizing reduction steel slag instead of calcium carbonate (filler) and river sand (fine aggregate).

  • In this paper we perform a linearized buckling analysis using the Kirchhoff plate theory and the von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relation. Design sensitivity analysis(DSA) expressions for plane elasticity and buckling problems are derived with respect to Young's modulus and thickness. Using the design sensitivity, we can formulate the topology optimization method for minimizing the compliance and maximizing eigenvalues. We develop a topology optimization method applicable to plate buckling problems using the prestress for buckling analysis. Since the prestress is needed to assemble the stress matrix for buckling problem using the von Karman nonlinear strain, we introduced out-of-plane motion. The design variables are parameterized into normalized bulk material densities. The objective functions are the minimum compliance and the maximum eigenvalues and the constraint is the allowable volume. Through several numerical examples, the developed DSA method is verified to yield very accurate sensitivity results compared with the finite difference ones and the topology optimization yields physically meaningful results.

  • The cultivation of agricultural crops results in the generation of agricultural byproducts. Researchers have reported that these materials can be useful in a variety of applications. However, over 50% of them are currently discarded because of the lack of specific technologies in industrial applications. Therefore, effective and specific applications must be developed in order to manufacture high-quality materials using discarded lignocellulosic resources. In this study, we determined the possibility of using kraft pulp from major agricultural byproducts as a raw material for the manufacture of paperboard. Rice husks, peanut husks, and garlic stems were obtained and used to prepare many kinds of kraft pulps by controlling the active alkali, sulfidity, reaction time, and liquor ratio. After the production of these kraft pulps, handsheets were manufactured by mixing them with KOCC. After preconditioning, the physical properties and strengths of the handsheets were measured according to the TAPPI test methods. The shapes, lengths, and widths of the pulp fibers varied according to the type of agricultural byproduct and the kraft pulping conditions. Rice husk and garlic stem pulps manufactured under mild pulping conditions resulted in handsheets of higher bulk than other pulps. Garlic stem pulps manufactured under mild pulping conditions were stronger than rice husk pulps and peanut husk pulps.

  • This research studied production of lightweight filling production for sink hole restoration utilizing various industrial by-products(2kinds of fly ash, petro-cokes CFBC ash, blast furnace slag fine particle). For this purpose, the mixed raw material properties(compressive strength) behaviors according to the blending ratio of industrial by-products were examined by applying the experimental design method and statistical analysis was performed using the commercial program MINITAB. Compressive strengths of industrial by-products were strongly dependent on blast furnace slag powder. Compressive strength(3days aging) was 3~11MPa depending on the amount of blast furnace slag powder used. The use of CFBC fly ash was evaluated to have the least effect on compressive strength. In addition, the compressive strength and the coefficient of permeability were measured by preparing foamed concrete for the experimental batch 1 condition in the mixture experimental design. In this case, the bulk density is 0.9 to 1.0, the apparent porosity is 30 to 50%, the compressive strength(3days old) is 1 to 2MPa, and the permeability coefficient is $10^{-2}$ to $10^{-3}cm/sec$.

  • In this study, Chung's equations 1, 2, and 3 were extended to standardize smoke safety rating evaluation in case of fire, and Chung's equations-V, smoke performance index-V, and smoke growth index-V were calculated. Five types of wood were selected and their smoke indices were measured using the cone calorimeter method according to ISO 5660-1. The smoke risk was graded by the smoke risk index-VI according to Chung's equation-VI. Smoke risk index-VI increased in the order of PMMA (1) ≈ maple (1.01) < ash (1.57) < needle fir (4.98) < paulownia (46.15) < western red cedar (106.26). It was predicted that maple and ash had the lowest smoke risk, and paulownia and western red cedar had the highest. The five samples' CO mean production rate (COPmean) was 0.0009~0.0024 g/s, indicating that these woods were incompletely burned than the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) reference material. Regarding the smoke properties of the chosen woods, the smoke performance index-V (SPI-V) increased as the bulk density increased, and the smoke risk index-VI (SRI-VI) decreased.
