  • The energy economic analysis of the standard rural house model with PV system was performed based on annual energy demand calculation using the EnergyPlus to contribute in reducing building energy which occupies 25% of national energy consumption and in developing a low-energy & eco-friendly house model. Two types of PV system installation was considered to cover electricity demand for cooling, electric, and heating devices. For the selected house model, heating energy demand is 7 times higher than cooling energy demand. For the Case1, it is favorable to use electricity from PV system for cooling and electric devices and to sell surplus electricity. For the Case2, it is favorable to use electricity from PV system for cooling, electricity and heating devices and to sell surplus electricity. Considering the installation cost of PV system and heat pump air conditioning system, the break-even point of Case1 and Case2 are about 13 and 11 years respectively. Although the installation cost of Case2 is more expensive, Case2 provides three times more profit than Case1 after the break-even point. Because the expected average life time of the selected PV system is 25 years, Case2 is more favorable option for the given standard rural house model.

  • GIS has been building for various application fields with the aids of NGIS project, especially numerous municipal governments are building a UIS in the level of local governments' informatization. Although there are some difference between municipal governments' business, still many things are in common. So far, individual municipal governments have developed a UIS for their own use, which lead to duplicated development of the UIS. The component technology has been introduced to remove such duplicated efforts and it enabled maximizing the reusablilty of the UIS already developed. This paper proposes a component design for network analysis of the drinking water to calculate the amount of flow and the head loss. This component design provides the initial water amount to estimate the amount of the network flow and the head loss, thereby supports the decision making such as installation or extension of the pipe network. The process of the component design accompanies the business reengineering to support the standardized business work flow. Also, the design of the network analysis component uses the algorithms induced with UML specification. Based on the component design, the component development has been progressing and the network analysis system would be followed. In the near future, another component to integrate the network analysis and the business related to the drinking water needs to be developed.

  • The research team for the virtual construction development was established with the support of Korea Ministry of Construction and Transportation, and KICTEP (Korea Institute of Construction and Transportation Technology Evaluation and Planning). Its aims are to develop system that is to improve productivity & quality, to create a higher value-added business, and to cultivate international competitiveness in the construction industry. The virtual construction system is a design, engineering, and construction management information system that allows the project participants to effectively share the information throughout the construction life cycle with the support of 3D and design information. To achieve this, the research team focuses on developing several systems. First, the team focuses on developing for the pre-planning, the structural engineering, MEP, and the 3D based estimation system. Second, they focus on developing a simulation system for the construction process planning and feasibility study with help of the virtual reality technologies. Third, they focus on developing the CPLM (Construction Project Life-cycle Management) system for managing construction project data, and the decision support system that makes the collaboration among the project participants based on 3D technologies and information. We also focus on developing the SDAI (Standard Data Access Interface), the localized guideline for 3D design, and a training program. In addition, we focus on developing the undeveloped area of the commercial system and building an environment that can support the communication and collaboration in the construction life-cycle rather than developing the existing and commercialized system.

  • This paper introduces a system, Simulation based Stochastic Markup Estimation System (S2ME), for estimating optimum markup for a project. The system was designed and implemented to better represent the real world system involved in construction bidding. The findings obtained from the analysis of existing assumptions used in the previous quantitative markup estimation methods were incorporated to improve the accuracy and predictability of the S2ME. The existing methods has four categories of assumption as follows; (1) The number of competitors and who is the competitors are known, (2) A typical competitor, who is fictitious, is assumed for easy computation, (3) the ratio of bid price against cost estimate (B/C) is assumed to follow normal distribution, (4) The deterministic output obtained from the probabilistic equation of existing models is assumed to be acceptable. However, these assumptions compromise the accuracy of prediction. In practice, the bidding patterns of the bidders are randomized in competitive bidding. To complement the lack of accuracy contributed by these assumptions, bidding project was randomly selected from the pool of bidding database in the simulation experiment. The probability to win the bid in the competitive bidding was computed using the profile of the competitors appeared in the selected bidding project record. The expected profit and probability to win the bid was calculated by selecting a bidding record randomly in an iteration of the simulation experiment under the assumption that the bidding pattern retained in historical bidding DB manifest revival. The existing computation, which is handled by means of deterministic procedure, were converted into stochastic model using simulation modeling and analysis technique as follows; (1) estimating the probability distribution functions of competitors' B/C which were obtained from historical bidding DB, (2) analyzing the sensitivity against the increment of markup using normal distribution and actual probability distribution estimated by distribution fitting, (3) estimating the maximum expected profit and optimum markup range. In the case study, the best fitted probability distribution function was estimated using the historical bidding DB retaining the competitors' bidding behavior so that the reliability was improved by estimating the output obtained from simulation experiment.

  • The recent emergence of the paradigm of new urban planning for building intelligent urban spaces, such as U-City and U-Eco City, of which the concept of ubiquitous technology is applied, requires high quality three-dimensional spatial information of the urban area. The aim of this study is to build a multi-dimensional spatio-visual information system that includes the solution for visualization, spatial information search, analysis, and evaluation by integrating various types of 3D-modeled spatial information concerning the large urban-size area based on the latest GIS application technology. The range of this study is the integration, visualization, and utilization of spatial information with the goal of building 3D virtual urban environment of high-quality and high-resolution by increasing the utilization of the systematic urban facilities in order to fully reflect the actual user's needs, using the aerial LiDAR data as the plan to overcome the limitations of the existing 3D urban modeling. By reproducing the virtual urban environment the most similar to the actual world through the mash-up of satellite images and aerial photos on the standard format of spatial information constituted of properties and signs, the system will be built with many analysis and utilization functions that support the view and sunlight analysis, various administrative tasks, as well as the decision making process of the city.

  • Construction Management at Risk (CMAR) is a project delivery method that enables CM companies to deliver projects at a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP). General contractors can apply CMAR from the initial design phase right through the construction phase to reduce risks and improve project performance. One of the major advantages CMAR offers is that it permits a general contractor to provide a comprehensive suite of preconstruction services, including estimating, a constructability review, value engineering, drawings and a specification review, green building, and Building Information Modeling(BIM), among others. However, general contractors in South Korea currently provide only limited preconstruction services using CMAR because few CMAR projects have yet been implemented in Korea and their experience using the method is therefore limited. This benchmark study of how foreign general contractors utilize CMAR in their projects, particularly during the preconstruction process, its purpose, and the roles and responsibilities of each of the different participants in successful implementations thus provides invaluable information and will serve as a useful guide for Korean contractors seeking to incorporate CMAR preconstruction services in their projects and thus improve the competitiveness of their construction businesses.

  • In order to study on the evacuation risk when connate fires caused by vertical fire spread of the exterior occurs, the egress simulations based on the relevant scenarios has carried out. As a result of it, ASET (permitted evacuation time) was reached in between 550 to 650 seconds in entire floors after vertical smoke spread from fire of combustible exteriors. In particular, ASET was 358 seconds in the first floor, 490 seconds in the six floor and 473 seconds in the tenth floor. In addition, five floors of all levels, the 1st floor, the 6th floor and the 28th floor ~30th floor, show RSET (minimum evacuation time) which is bigger than ASET as evacuation risk. This result presents occupants in high rise buildings with more than 15 floors might not be able to egress of them using staircases due to huge population attempting to evacuate simultaneously. Particularly, 699 people in the upper levels by smoke from the first floor are having difficulty escaping this building since ASET on the first floor adjacent to the ignition point was 358 seconds which is relatively reached fast. Considering a prevention method of the fire and smoke spread, architects have to use non-combustible exterior in the building's facade to be required as an active fire protection system.

  • This article purposes to define archival justice and suggest democratic modeling of the archive on the Truth and Reconciliation Committee (TRC), which is focused on victims of state violence. These purposes come from critical mind that the absence of framework of the records management for collective memory would cause incorporation of TRC archives into mainstream archives systems in which voices of victims have been marginalized. This article intends to expand theoretical prospects of documentation of past affairs through applying humanistic and theoretical frameworks differently from institutional and policy approaches on restoration of collective memory. In order to do this, this article first considers archival justice as archives building in which state violence' victims are pivotal and then extracts theoretical frameworks for building the archives based on archival justice from recent discourses of post-colonial archives and community archives. As the next step, it criticizes current conditions of TRC archives in Korea on the basis of extracted theoretical frames and finally suggests realistic models in which each theoretical frame could be applied effectively into TRC archives that is focused on victims.

  • This paper presents a modeling prototype that optimizes construction processes implementing information communication technology (ICT). Using "IAMB", each and every actual steps of the construction process may be defined visually and explicitly by elaborating ICT to improve productivity and management efficiency. It contributes to identify the features on what parts of construction task are covered by ICT, and the effects of ICT on process performance. After analyzing 10 real project cases, ICT application types are classified into four categories according to ICT type, job functions that ICT applied, and the project phase in which ICT used. As a reuslt, it was confirmed that the positive outcomes on the construction process were beneficial to mostly the general contractors and mainly obtained by automated information processing, external consignment and consistent information use. Negative effects, which were occurred by mainly manual manipulation and duplication of information handling, were accrued to general contractors minimally, but to subcontractors maximally. Expert focus group commends that several important issues should be considered when implementing ICT.

  • An analysis considering the fluid-structure interaction is required to strictly evaluate the seismic behavior of facilities such as, environmental facilities and dams, that store fluids. Specifically, in the case of an infinite domain in the upstream direction, such as a dam-reservoir system, this should be carefully considered. In this study, we proposed a practical numerical model for both wave propagation and fluid-structure interaction analyses of an infinite domain, for a system with a semi-infinite domain such as a dam-reservoir system. This method was applicable to the time domain, and enabled accurate boundary analysis. For an infinite fluid domain, a small number of mid-point integrated acoustic finite elements were applied instead of a general acoustic finite element, and a viscous boundary was imposed on the outermost boundary. The validity and accuracy of the proposed method were secured by comparing analytic solutions of a reservoir having infinite domain, with the parametric analysis results, for the number of elements and the size of the modeling region. Furthermore, the proposed method was compared with other fluid-structure interaction methods using additional mass.
